The Challenge: Rivals - Ratings

It's very surprising that the ratings rebounded, especially with it being a female elimination episode. It definitely goes to show us that anything can happen. However, the ratings obviously indicate the show is on its last leg. After 20 seasons, it's normal for a show to not draw a large audience. Let's cross our fingers that there will a couple more seasons. :) I know the production costs are different and there are many factors that determine if a show is renewed or cancelled, but seeing Teen Mom get 3.6m viewers and a 2.1 18-49 rating on Tuesday doesn't make The Challenge look any better.
I was on the treadmill last night and I was watching Teen Mom to see this hype. WORST SHOW EVER, how does it get that many viewers? Seriously?

Typically, aren't ratings as a whole lower in the summer? I also like to point out that at these ratings are significantly better than Cutthroat episode 3.
I think the ratings went up because of CT and his argument with Wes, so I think CT needs to go crazy some more for them to stay up but I think yesterday's episode showed all of his outbursts from the trailers.
MTV’s Challenge Rivals was down a tenth to a 0.9 adults 18-49 rating.
source

I love all the girls, and they're story is actually exciting! Teen Mom 2 is horrible and boring! Plus the girls have a disgusting attitude. I know a lot of people who agree with me. Either way, This is sad...goodbye Challenges :(
Not good im guessing dang it hopefully it picks up but it looks like people are starting to not be interested anymore :/.
A big majority of people haven't been interested in the Challenges in a long time so the ratings being down so low again is no big shock to me. Heck, I was a huge fan of the Challenges but I haven't watched a single episode of Rivals all the way through yet....and unless I'm having trouble sleeping and need something to put me to sleep, I probably won't watch an episode all the way through.
How good do the ratings have to be for the series to get renewed? D:
How good do the ratings have to be for the series to get renewed? D:
None but the MTV execs know the answer to that question.
1.6 million isn't that bad.. They renewed My life as Liz and Rj Berger and they had lower ratings but it all depends on money too I guess.
I'm pretty sure ratings will go up, that is if they air a rerun right after a Jersey Shore premiere.
1.6 million isn't that bad.. This season was supposed to be better. The advertising lead-in to the season brought in over 2M, but that number has thus far been unsustainable for the subsequent episodes.

Cut Throats first four episodes were 1.741, 1.275, 1.281, 1.436 with 0.9(/2), 0.7(/2), 0.7(/2), 0.9(/3) (A18-49) ratings While Rivals has been 1.879, 1.357, 1.658, 1.616 with 1.1, 0.7, 1.0, 0.9 (A18-49 no idea if its /2 or /3) ratings Just for more comparison (and to try and generate more optimism) Fresh Meat 2: 1.386, 1.243, 1.563, 1.130 with 0.8, 0.8, 0.8, 0.6 (A 18-49 /2) ratings V1man what ratings do you think are needed for the challenge to return or at least make a solid case for?
The show isn't getting good ratings because this challenge feels like something we've seen already. There are MORE than enough new people and I really wish they would do an all newbie challenge. For 1 challenge can we have no Evan, Kenny, Johnny, Wes, Paula, Evelyn, Jenn. Hell after 3 in a row the same fresh meat bores(Brandon, Laurel, Cara Maria, Theresa) are getting boring. Theyll never win because the same alliance dominates every time.

BTW, Rivals got a 0.8 A18-49 rating for the second episode. I'm definitely more optimistic after looking at the ratings for Cutthroat. Cutthroat never got over a 1.0 rating in A18-49, however Rivals got two airings with a 1.0 rating or over. These ratings aren't anything to brag about, but I think they show that the series isn't dead. I believe both RW: B2V2 and Rivals have breathed a little life back into both shows.

Advertisers want more Teen Mom and Jersey Shore rated shows, so if MTV has one of those in its bag of tricks (like the show we pitched to MTV three years ago) then I'd opt for one of them instead of the challenge, but that's me... 2.5 - 3.0 consistent ratings...

I wish they could just let the fans pick the cast for a final season or something. I'm starting to think the ratings are good enough to be renewed but they need to get more advertisers or something. It would be funny if the challenge was cancelled all the fans would send MTV mail or something like people did when the show "Jericho" was cancelled. But it's kind of sad because not a lot of people know about this being the final contracted season of the challenge, and a lot of new RW's will come onto the RW expecting a challenge and just making it a boring season (Ex = DC). But I know the real world has another two seasons and Bunim Murray doesn't want to cancel that I expect so maybe the challenge will go hand in hand? :scratch_one-s_head:

Yeah, most fans aren't like us. :(

I'd try to incorporate like up to 6 Vegas cast members, that show was popular ergo they should build off that momentum.

FM2 was all about Kenny and Wes, if they are so cool and entertaining then shouldn't it have received better ratings than Cutthroat?
People are tired of all the Austin, Key West, and Fresh Meat 1 kids winning every thing, that's why people really want wes and JEK to lose.
If they were entertaining then why do the ratings suck? That cast was pretty bad overall, and the challenge in general was boring and just a meh season. It's just hard to imagine the challenge without the main guys, the plot is always revolved around them, and they provide the best soundbites (except Wes) Also FM2 followed RW: DC, which was pretty boring (IMO).

On Cutthroat they had a bunch of new faces, new drama, new friendships, new hookups, awesome challenges and it was great. If they actually started focusing on new people then new "top dogs" and fan favorites will emerge.

But I'm curious, if you replaced Kenny and Wes on FM2 with someone like Alton and Frank...I think the story lines would have been harder to sell than Kenny and Wes. I enjoy some consistency.

I enjoy some consistency.
The thing is though you don't necessarily need a storyline. You can have one, but I like it better when it's not the main focus of the show. Like on The Duel we had stuff like Beth vs the girls, CT and Diem's relationship, and Wes trying to win it for his future. While the Beth one was prominent, it didn't necessarily overshadow the competition aspect of the show as much as some of the stories now do. I think the ratings are slipping since nothing's that surprising outside of Kenny/Wes sucking. There's too much control over the game in one alliance and winning on your day honestly has next to no affect on the game. On the Dules, Ruins, Gauntlets, and Fresh Meats, winning gave you some control over who went in on the other team. Winning on this one just means you don't go in, and so far that really hasn't come into play all that much, at least as of what's been shown.
I really don't think rating aren't that bad considering that the rating for Cutthroat and Fresh Meat 2 were below average. The challenge isn't really a new concept, and I don't expect to see huge increases in ratings like the Jersey Shore did. When the ratings go up for the challenges, I expect them to be a gradual increase with some bumps along the road. The challenges and Real World have proven themselves to not just be another MTV trend like other shows have. For example, right now Teen Mom is one of the Challenge's main competitors on the new work. While ratings for that show are going well, rating for 16 and pregnant are really slipping and it will be difficult to regain viewers. The fact that the Challenge is not just another trend makes it valuable to MTV. I feel attached to the network because of the show. I've been watching MTV since I was in 4th grade and now I'm going to be a college senior. I continue to watch the network because of Challenges, and I doubt I'd invest any time into other series if it weren't for the Challenges. While I do watch Jersey Shore and Teen Mom, I don't expect to be watching them in 5 years. But I've watched people like Aneesa and Robin throughout my teen years, and I've seen them change as people. While the challenge's days may be limited I feel that they keep a lot of people attached to MTV. Most of the people I know that watch the challenges have been watching for years and continue to watch just because they have been for so long.
