Don't get me started...
Anyway, I do see a few trends that are not readily available to the general public and there seems to be a good amount of search interest in the encore showings. I think that can be translated roughly, into viewers and hopefully those viewers show up for the episode Wednesday night and kick the A18-49 up a couple ticks.

It'd be nice if they picked up at least 1 more season to give time for that new law to go into effect that will let the government shutdown/block file-hosting sites to see if that helps any. MTV's prime demographic and the users of those pirate host sites are probably directly related in age.
These ratings are definitely good. I'm pleasantly surprised. They are on par with Back to Vegas 2 ratings, and RW got renewed for two more seasons. I think these short renewals will continue to happen for both series until the ratings hit rock bottom. Back to Vegas 2 averaged 2.067 million viewers and a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic. This doesn't count the the reunion or S#!t They Should Have Shown. I'm definitely optimistic that the series will get a two season renewal, so they'll have a place to ship off rookies fresh off RW. I remember a poster a few weeks ago saying that as long as RW is around, so will the challenges. After seeing these ratings, I believe that will be the case.
I'm going to go against the gloom and doom prognostication here and predict they build an audience over the next few weeks and tip the scales for a limited renewal.
The Ep1 live + 1st 24hr dvr numbers will likely take the show over 2.0M. If episodes two and three can grow the audience by 10% (2.2M), then I think MTV can make a case to the MTV Networks bosses that it has an audience to be exploited. Given the terrible reaction of critics to Jersey Shore's Italy experience, having good challenges numbers to throw into a press release about a contract extension (limited renewal as B suggests), would give critics something decent to comment on.
I'm not sure if Rivals was the last on the contract, or if there is one more, but if Rivals is the last one, I think we can feel better about the renewal for two reasons....
1) Derek McCray (RR: VR) posted on Facebook a few months ago how he got a call from MTV and it looks like his summer will be more interesting (sorry for no photo, too lazy to go back months into his profile)
2) A few weeks ago, Vinny posted a photo of himself shirtless in the mirror to show how he was training. The original caption was "Challenge time" but was quickly changed to "summer summer summer time"

I doubt that invites have been sent out already.

Derek did say write later that it was not a challenge. Maybe he is taking truth lessons from Cara Maria?
I might be wrong, but its not how many millions watch, but the 18-49 rating which is where the advert market is - that's what brings money to MTV. I think we should keep an eye on that one. I think overall, it was a good debut.

You are more right than wrong... but overall numbers are import to MTV because it tells them who they are retaining.
There are several threads here about ratings with some great tutorials from a couple of people who work in TV advertising.
MTV went through a phase a while ago in their press releases extolling their #1 rating for either a challenge or RW (I've forgotten which) in the 13 + demo. 18-49 includes a large group outside MTV's prime demographic. If it were inside the demo, they would be heavily recruiting Old School cast members to appeal to the older demo (35-49). The 18-34 traunch is where one routinely used to find the challenges and RW episodes in the top 10. You can search online at Media Life Magazine to find the ratings history of most any RW or challenge, by name. Just about every Wednesday they publish the top ratings for the previous week.
Media Life is read by the Advertising industry and advertisers.
BTW, the top of the 18-49 group was originally seen by the MTV Networks executives as the feeding ground for VH-1. MTV was to be CBS' (now Viacom's) home for teens who would then "graduate" to VH-1. Unfortunately, the proliferation of other networks like WE, OXYGEN, Lifetime, BRAVO, etc, made their own attractive reality shows which competed very well against VH-1.
I hope the ratings don't drop because Adam R got kicked off, as stupid as it may sound he seems to have many people tune in just to see him. On his Fb page there was all these people saying "I was only watching because of you, so I am not watching anymore bla bla". I don't get why people find him interesting, there are way better people on the show than that retard.

Really? That is just surprising considering VH1 has such horrible shows. I am not sure why any adult would consider that network a step up in TV watching. They used to have some good ones, but not anymore that I ever see on there.

although a few might be serious, most people that say that are just looking for a retweet

Well obviously I was writing in the historical context of when VH-1 was created. You know the place is on hard times when Bret Michaels' latest show only pulls 326,000 people.

LOL. What's the old adage--Front page pictures of car wrecks sell a lot of newspapers.... so it may be related a phenomenon.

Wow... that's... kinda pathetic, I feel bad for him, but I mean, people are tired of seeing him, there's only so much you can bear.
I can see the ratings dip on female elimination episodes. Hopefully they won't though.
Are you suggesting viewers are sexist or do you have some other explanation. :to_pick_ones_nose:

Just a theory of mine. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I agree with that. Its like girls sports do worse than boys sports on TV or at drawing a crowd (yes, before I get pounced on the 100th time this week I know there are exceptions and places where girls sports do better)

OK, I was just curious if you had done some demographic stratification research or if it was simply a WAG. "Theory" seems to fit the latter category, which is OK with me...
An worthy hypothesis for consideration might be:
Gender and sexual orientation affect viewing habits.

More age 18 - 34 women than men watch MTV (and the Challenges).

The greatest percentage of women viewers are straight.

A larger percentage of male viewers are gay when compared to a similar viewer group of women.

Straight women and gay men, as a demographic stratification, may be inclinded to view the male elimination episodes than the others...
Hmmm interesting. I guess I was under the wrong impression lol.
I feel men's weeks may be higher because that's where the drama is these days. I feel the inferno 1 was all about Katie vs Veronica, and Coral vs Julie. I feel guys weeks could have been lower then... but maybe I'm wrong.

That was the crux of my theory until I saw the info that v1man posted above.

If anyone knew the real answer it would be the advertisers. Everyone would buy ad time only on the guy elimination nights if the hypothetical were completely true -- and it made a real marketing difference. But advertisers don't do that for a bunch of good reasons.
My real point is, if you have a working theory, you won't know if it makes sense until it gets examined in open discussion. Just go for it!
Does anyone know the raitings from last night?
I don't know if they've been posted yet, but we'll probably know in a few hours.

Thanks OrangeStar. I just checked about 30 minutes ago and found nothing, but now we have the answer.
