Yes if they had already made the decision, which they didn't. Now they are probably looking at the ratings of Rivals to see if it is worth renewing first.
They renewed Real World very early in Return to Vegas season. I don't think they are renewing it. Wouldn't surprise me if the finale gets billed as the Final Challenge and the winners as the ultimate all-time forever champions to drum up last hour ratings. MTV seems to be big on scripted shows the last year or so. Not sure why but that is what it feels like they are gravitating towards.

And since they renewed RW they might renew the challenges aswell since they're kind of tied together. And they want fixed shows because they can cause their own drama, you'll never have boring episodes. Well they're all boring but you get the point..

I sometimes watch the re-runs on weekends but they seem to not show them as often as they once did. I don't really care that much if they do or they don't renew it. I used to like it as a way to learn what old Real World casts are up to, but that isn't so hard to do with a lot of them on twitter now. I thought MTV was owned by the same company as CBS. CBS seems to be crawling out of a ratings slump with new scripted drama shows so I assume the owners will try to use the same strategy to move MTV past Jersey Shore. I like some of the music/talent competition shows but Real World is the only true "reality" show I watch. Those type shows are worn out and the more serious scripted shows are getting pretty good lately. If I even had to choose who lived or died between Real World and Teen Wolf, you probably wouldn't like my choice.

What is interesting is that MTV Networks’ had a two-hour session at the Television Critics Association on Friday and announced new series in development and a renewal for America's Best Dance Crew. I think that renewing one of the oldest shows on MTV would be something to announce, but it didn't happen. MTV does turn 30 years old on Monday, perhaps that will be the big day for the challenges? V1Man's information doesn't really make me think this is going to happen, though.

It could've been a conversation from before rivals was airing and at that time we all knew that the challenge contract wasn't renewed yet. Keep hope people!
I was looking at the ratings for that Wednesday night, and it caught my eye that a rerun of Family Guy on [as] got a higher rating and viewers then Rivals. I'm quite baffled by this.
God I hope it gets renewed. With all the shows they have on that no one watches, why get rid of the Challenges when they have a loyal fanbase and this season is the best one in ages and things are finally starting to shift with new people on.
I don't know what I'd do if it got cancelled. It's been a HUGE part of my life since Fresh Meat I. Actually, I do know what I'd do. I'd cry because some day I'm going to be on a challenge. :)
Real World probably got renewed quickly becasue it's ratings were so good. Rivals has had okay ratings. I really hope the challenges come back and I hope they do another Duel. Too bad people don't watch these anymore I think they are really fun. Also, does anyone know why these shows and Real World don't come to DVD? That seems kind of strange. There are some old seasons and challenges I missed I would like to see.

I am guessing if they cancel the series they might try to release some of it on DVD via Amazon's manufactured to order program--at least I would if I were them.

CBS was connected to VIACOM at one time, but that is no longer the case. CBS and VIACOM split at the beginning of 2006. While the companies cooperate in some areas, they are competitors in others. Somewhere in the bowels of Zeus' archives rests the thread about the distinction between CBS and VIACOM.
Anybody else have the feeling that the remainder of this Challenge season is going to pretty much get swept under the rug by MTV with the premiere of the new Jersey Bore season this Thursday? There hasn't been any replays of last Wednesday's episode other than the 2 they ran that same night and starting this past Friday, MTV has been Jersey Bore dominated all weekend and looks like it'll be that way this coming Thursday night through Saturday too.

And the people that want challenges get the challenges :p

Daria, another MTV show, was delayed being put on DVD for years because the liscensing fees for the music would have been astronomical. I could see this being a problem for the challenges and some of their background music selections - escpecially the older seasons

Gauntlet 2 is on iTunes and they still have their old music. Why not put the older seasons on mtv.com?
The only thing all of the challenges from Gauntlet 2 on have in common is they all have the same host, not sure if that would matter though. I definately think there is audience enough to at least put older seasons on an avenue like ITunes or Hulu+ though, there are definately older seasons that should be easily accessible because they are referenced in the newer shows

I think the Inferno 3 is when the music started changing. Even on the Gauntlet 2 after shows, Battle of the sexes 1, Gauntlet 1..etc. were featured and the extended footage were shown so it shows the music wouldn't have been a problem sadly.
Doesn't Jersey Shore play the same music like the challenges or Real worlds?
It's definitely not an issue of music. The music used on the challenges is all unknown, up and coming artists.
It's definitely not an issue of music. The music used on the challenges is all unknown, up and coming artists.
I agree. It's probably MTV just being too lazy/thinking it won't make enough money.
I would love to see the challenges renewed.:search:
As far as the music thing goes, couldn't MTV just dub in a bunch of generic music like the UFC does?

If they take out the music in the Challenges dvds most likely they're going to have a generic tracklist from GarageBand or FOL.
There isn't a DVD because of music licensing. There isn't a DVD because no one would buy it. And before anyone chimes in, yes I don't mean 0 people, I mean that the amount of people who would buy it would not constitute enough of a reason to put out a DVD in the first place, especially when the episodes are online for free and probably on iTunes as well.

I think if they started releasing DVD's in the future they could draw up some interest by having a lot of DVD extra's exclusive to the DVD. The reason I am not going to buy the Vegas DVD is because it is just the house tour and all the episodes. I have those episodes recorded already so there is nothing to gain with the DVD. Those "hours of behind the scenes" extras really help with DVD sales I think.
At least put them on iTunes! They put the Gauntlet 2 on iTunes, why not Inferno 2? Battle of the sexes?..etc. I would buy them. Yeah some of the older seasons are online but it isn't TV quality.
Yea, I don't see people buying them now either but when the show was in its prime I think there could have been a market. Seems strange to me they never put them out.
So....what are the odds of the Challenges being cancelled?
