But it's unrealistic because the Challenge is going to need newbies somewhere down the line if this happens. I see plenty of life in TRW especially with this last season where we had a great cast, drama, and some real problems. Both RW and Challenge were great this time around and if anything, they're showing they have a LOT of life left.
You might, but do the investors?
There's a lot lost in translation in my posts. What I'm saying is that in order to save the series, they can only focus on one show at a time. Right now the collective whole feels that the Challenge is the place to start. Yeah, Real World is bringing in "higher" ratings, but that is only one fragment of the equation. Higher ratings =/= higher revenue in every situation.
And Witty, what I mean is that the Challenge doesn't have a set format it's always followed. The format and themes are always changing, and can continue to do so. RW is the story of 7 strangers, you can throw in little twists now and then (Exes worked, Skeletons as a whole did not (maybe a few, but not every single one of them)), but it becomes contrived and more scripted/manipulated with each change.

Well I'm cool with them focusing on The Challenge I just hope their idea for Season 27 doesn't involve AYTO or anyone else outside of Real World, Road Rules, and Fresh Meat unless they decide to give the fans a opportunity and I mean actual fans not models and actors.

Well formats and themes doesn't mean much if the cast is the same damn thing we've seen a thousand times.
And you really gotta wonder what themes/formats can they really do at this point? What can they do that will attract viewers? I don't know what they're going to do for season 27 but it better be good otherwise they might as well cancel it.
Or at least attempt to make it something other than a loss... It's like they keep renewing and yet they treat it with a defeatist attitude in terms of promotion. Maybe with a renew and actual focus and work put into RW, something could change. But that's just me, I don't know much at all about TV biz lol.
I personally think they should put it on hiatus. Focus on reviving The Challenge (which is kind of what they are doing right now). Once that's stable, focus on RW again. If they can't stabilize The Challenge, then both need to be canned simultaneously, they're way too expensive to settle for subpar. Some people will use the defense "MTV's ratings are low as a whole..." While true, it's not an excuse. Catfish is going stronger than "MTV as a whole," and Teen Mom OG will likely do even better.
That was on the the premiere (Most of the time tends to be the highest episode), this week it did worse than Real World:
Real World : 1, 032,000 Overall / P18-34 0.90/ P18-49 0.6
Catfish: 961,000 overall/ P18-34 0.81/ P18-49 0.5
Battle of The Exes 2- 827,000 overall/ P18-34 0.77 / P18-49 0.5
Eye Candy- 579,000 overall/ P-34 0.40/ P18-49 0.3
I just don't see it getting cancel even though the ratings are not stellar by any means, after the 3rd episode this season have been doing better than portland and that gave us 1 more season

It's not like The Challenge isn't fixed for some people to be on the cast (like Bananas, Wes, CT, Leroy) or some twists that are purely created to cause drama. I feel like the main problem that The Challenge is having right now, is that you almost have to know the history of the Challenge to fully get the show/people now and MTV is missing the chance to let the viewers get to see the history of the Challenge. It's like you are starting to watch a show while it's been already on it's 26th season and you want to see what happened before, but MTV is almost ignoring what has happened in the first 15 seasons and all the people that helped build up this franchise. Like they never existed. It's basically an all-star season every season where the same people are participating and you kind of have to know them to get some drama/competition/relationships between the players, but they don't even use their best people from the past/all-stars. Mind that to film a Challenge with it's high-extraordinary challenges/houses and hundreds that are involved in each season to film/produce a show that involves like 28-32 people flying them and follow them across the world for 6/7 weeks costs probably more than to film seven people for 2/3 months in the states and just record what is happening. Additionaly, you even have to give money away on the Challenge whether that means the contracts with the cast/production team or the actual prize money and on the Real World, the people have to pay for anything with their one money. That wasn't the case in the past that much than now.
I think the biggest plus RW has, is that every season of the RW is like a completly new beginning. You don't need to know what happened before Skeletons to enjoy this season of the Real World which means the format of The Challenge has a far more difficult job to attract new viewers without new twists/turns/themes. However, The Challenge has build up it's core group/addience over the years that will watch almost every season and there's the rub/the main issue for the RW is that they have to find it's audience every season from the beginning again (because even if you don't watch a season, you're not missing anything) with interesting people, stories, drama, twists. It's like all-in every season for MTV.
In a way, The Real World is just an easier concept to use for a reality tv show than the Challenge, but TRW has also far more risks that you might have to take whereas The Challenge might cost you a lot in the beginning, but you are guaranteed to get something back, because failure doesn't get punished that much as on The Real World.
They should really try the Old/New mix, because the "old" people won't lose you any viewers and some of them may even bring you a whole another audience/numbers that you previously lost while forgetting the ones from season 1-15. Imagine if someone told you (you were once a MTV fan) that Coral/Beth/Darrell/Mark/Derrick/Landon/Rachel/Veronica/Julie are doing a challenge again? That will cause some buzz if promoted properly and give you at least some good new viewers, but many of them are not even new, because they are the ones that don't watch the Challenge anymore because their favorites stopped doing one. Using people from the past (especially since for some it has been for years!) they would feel like new fresh faces, but they have their core fans that might follow them again to watch on a season.
I blame MTV. Bottom line. This Daniels ***** needs to be fired.
MTV was doing fine until she came and ****** things up. She can go now. Because bottom line, even if you bring back ALLLLLLLL the vets The Challenge is still going to bring in the same numbers as Exes and Free Agents.
The problem is not casting, granted having some other people show up wouldn't be bad but they need a theme to promote The Challenge and some of these people just don't fit the theme or don't want to come back leaving their ex or rival not cast.
The problem IMO is promotion and to me promotion is key because these shows take such long breaks that they become forgettable. The Challenge/The Real World should be promoted when they aren't even airing a new season. Bravo/VH1 airs there shows when they aren't even airing a new season and it keeps people remembering them and wondering when the next season is. They don't do that. Exes 2 and Skeletons will end and we won't see anything related to TC/RW shows until next season which could be next year. And that's sad. What happened to reruns?? This weeks episode was so ******* good it should come on everyday till the new episode even twice a day. Like lets be real.
Next season we may get this new and different format but we just got that and how did that do? Free Agents did slightly better than Exes 2. And Exes 2 has been a great season and to see it fail says a lot. The cast was even good too. Like MTV has ****** up and to me its suck a easy fix. PROMOTE!!!! What is so hard? I don't get it.
This is a MTV problem not a casting, theme, and whatever other excuses people want to make.

You better thanks Mrs. Daniels for keeping TheChallenge/The Real World alive!
What I don't get is what the hell is the problem with showing reruns & actually promoting the shows...they used to do it so it's not like this has always been the case with these shows. They might as well cancel the shit bc they expect the most from doing the least & then want to act like it's the show's/everyone else's fault. These network executives are really something else. I personally couldn't fathom being around such idiocy; I bet you that they either truly believe they are doing everything they can or they really just don't give a damn but want to be absolved of all blame.
I definitely agree with the promotion thing. Everyday I come home from school and all I see on MTV is reruns of Ridiculousness and Catfish. I never hear or see anything on TRW until Tuesdays.

Barely!
Because last time I checked The Real World is practically canceled and this season of The Challenge is do or die like the last 3 seasons. So I'm not thanking that ***** for anything. She should be thanking us for staying around.
The fact that this season isn't getting a reunion said it all... Even if they do renew it, it's obviously thisclose to being canceled so if it does come back I hope they do something to really recapture the viewers they've lost.
I don't want RW to be cancelled, because I'd hate for it to go out like that. I think it should end purposefully, but that's the fan in me.
With that said, I don't think it's completely fair to compare RW and The Challenge's ratings. Yes, Real World is getting higher ratings, but it also airs during primetime, unlike The Challenge.
I can't believe this season won't get a reunion (and no aftershows). That sucks.
I wish I could see how having both on the same day was a good idea. I just cannot wrap my head around this logic that the higher ups go by. I miss being able to look forward to RW on Wednesday, and Challenge on Thursday. What would be their reasoning for not giving those slots to those respective shows??

There is no logic.
I'm so glad Youtube/Netflix/Hulu are killing these networks & making their bullshit obsolete.

I've heard that it is a funding issue. Viacom cut MTV's operating and promotional budget. I think MTV must also pay BMP a fee each time an episode is aired. I'm sorry but they would be idiots to cancel The Real World before AYTO, The Challenge, and those flop scripted shows they've been trying to make happen.
How can you have a challenge without The Real World? They can barely pull together a cast now, unless they are making a return to Road Rules then the challenge won't survive long either.
And the thing is, you could watch the entire season of Skeletons & Ex-Plosion on YouTube right now lol
The Challenge is doomed no matter what you do IMO. I think it can get 1 million to 1.3 million throughout the season but no higher. I could be wrong though.
LOL @ the comments. People were talking about how MTV should go back to playing music videos...Um that's not going to work. In the age if the internet and On-Demand nobody is going to sit down and watch random videos for hours on end anymore.
I think MTV just doesn't have shows that people are willing to watch anymore. There was a time they did but that's long gone and there's nothing there now that really is going to grab people. I think MTV might be on it's last legs.
Pardon me if this question has been answered already but I'm just catching up on my dvr stuff and I'm watching TRW and I noticed that the reunion has not been recorded. Did this season get a reunion special? Or did my tivo mess up and not record it?
