To me the ratings depend on the cast. I've only been watching since Brooklyn, but the only great cast ive seen was the Vegas 2 season, which incidentally had the best ratings. I think BMP needs to take bigger risks on the casts, instead of taking a bunch of safe people and 1 crazy person which is what they seem to do every time, and when the crazy person gets his **** together (Frank) or gets kicked off the show(Adam R, Ryan L) starts to suck. Theres been so many boring people in the last 7 seasons. The whole Brooklyn, DC (except Ty, Emily, and maybe Andrew), and San Diego season (except Frank), CJ and Derek on Cancun, and Eric, Sahar and Ashlee on New Orleans just should never have been cast to be on reality tv. If your only casting about 50% of the right people, your not doing your job well enough. It really seems like the st. thomas cast is heading down the same road as some of the last seasons...i feel like the only interesting storylines so far have been brandon being crazy, and when he gets kicked off or gets his **** together i think it will be another boring season. At least its not as bad as san diego

I see what you are saying, but you also have to take into account the 7 strangers all bring their unique style to the casting table. Editing is partly to blame but not completely. I can assure you that Brandon wasn't the only one who was "branded" crazy before casting. Same goes for Adam R. I am not saying crazy, as in dramatic, I am saying crazy as in unique/funny/outspoken.
It feels like instead of digging deep into possible roommates, they just settled of 6 fun people, and 1 "unique" person. Everyone besides Brandon remind me of generic party people; nothing interesting about them.
I think having the show in St. Thomas was a bad idea. I know everyone's been saying it's the cast that makes the show good or not, but I really think location plays a good part in that too. If the show's gonna be in a more vacation-like setting (Cancun, Vegas, Key West, Hawaii, etc.) then the show should have people that act like they're on vacation. I'm talking wild hookups, lots of drinking, partying, drunken drama, etc. When I first saw the commercial for the Cancun season I was like "that looks awesome!". This season, they couldn't even make the trailer at least look exiting. This cast doesn't seem to be doing anything exiting so far, at least to me they aren't.
The promo for next week looks interesting though, I'm really curious about what's happening to Robb and I want to see what goes on between Treyra.

Who else did they think was going to be crazy? Marie seems like she could cause some drama, but everyone else seems like they just want to get along and not fight with each other. Trey, Laura, and Swift seem too nice, Robb might be a wild card, and I literally can't remember Latoya saying anything yet.

Did you not see that awesome pillow fight last episode? It was epic.

Latoya's had some, if not all, of the funniest one-liners so far this season. She seems like the comedic relief type.
I'm rewatching this weeks episode and you know what...it's actually really good. If this episode hadn't aired on the fourth and had a preview that featured more of Brandon's "ways" then I think it might have done better.

I thought it was a fairly good episode. It definitely wasn't as advertised. This was the sort of episode that would do much better at an earlier hour though IMO.

I've seen hundreds of movie and scripted & reality TV pillow fights. This one didn't make my top 25 or even top 50.
I just watched this week's episode and I've gotta say I'm legitimately shocked to see ratings are so low. The past episodes were really good in my opinion, 100 times better than all of the San Diego season. This past episode I thought was really enjoyable with the whole Brandon drama, Laura smothering Trey, Robb as Captain Red Bush the ginger superhero, and the brewing showmance between Robb and Marie is fun to watch. I really hope the only problem is the timing over the past couple weeks and I expect ratings to rise next week because to my knowledge nothing's on next Wednesday.

Yep, I completely agree.
After watching the latest episode of St. Thomas, I'm convinced it's a casting issue because they're just not casting interesting people as much as they used to which is why I can see why the ratings are what they are this season, the St. Thomas kids are nice but none of them bring much to the table, they're not really that interesting to make you want to watch. If I wasn't a RW fan and watched every season, I doubt I would be watching St. Thomas, I'm pretty indifferent towards them.

I disagree.
How do you define interesting? Everyone has different opinions. Obviously these people showed something in casting to be seen as interesting, and some of them do have very interesting stories. I know nothing about Robb, Marie, LaToya, or Swift at this point, but maybe that will come later. I think Trey's story is very interesting and one I'd love to hear more about if given the opportunity. Adoption and drug issues are very big "storylines" in any person's life, and Laura and Brandon just happened to be the two that are representing that this season.
The issue may be that they are not casting the most interesting group of people, not necessarily individuals. For example, if Brandon were put into a house with someone who lost a family member to drug abuse, there might be a connection there. If Trey was put in a house with someone whose family member was murdered, there might be some drama there. If Laura was put in a house with someone who was abandoned and never adopted, there might be some resentment there.
I had a conversation with someone regarding this just the other day. They don't always pick the top 7 people that come through casting. At some point, they need to take into account a person's compatibility, interest level, and flair for the dramatics. The person with the most interesting story could also be the most boring person on television. So, they'll settle for interesting story #11 with charisma level #2.
We're only two episodes in. Things may change. If they don't and you continue to be bored, you may have a reason for why they cut filming short. However, keep in mind that while you may be bored, there are probably other people who think this is a great season.

I agree. I think what people find interesting is subjective.
When it comes to reality TV, I define interesting as someone like Adam R. or even Sam - interesting doesn't always have to be the obnoxious person screaming and throwing things, interesting in a sense where there's something about their story and personality that holds your attention and reels you in and imo I don't really feel that with any of the people this season but it's still early so maybe things will change. And I completely understand that there are people who think this is a great season, I was saying that imo I agree with what the OP was saying about casting and that it seems to play a huge role in the ratings and also that BMP are playing it safe with a lot of the people they've been casting these last few years, but that's just my opinion and I understand that not everyone feels that way.
Real World is completely capable of getting good solid ratings even the St. Thomas 10 minute sneak peek did pretty well but for some reason the next night when the show premiered most of that audience was gone so clearly I'm not the only person who feels this way.

Oh, I agree that casting plays a huge role in the ratings. Just look at last season. While Frank had an incredibly interesting backstory, he turned a lot of people off.
While BMP may have been playing it safe, they also brought us some people we'll never forget. Ryan Leslie, Leroy, Dustin, Adam, Frank, to name a few...
I've found myself remembering the men more than the women over the last few seasons. I'm not sure if it's because the men have had the majority of the drama (Ryan vs Preston, Dustin's history, Zach vs Frank) or what. Maybe that is something they can work on for next time.

And I think so. I think they've kind of been learning a lot from the past couple seasons and figuring out what works and what doesn't work now since reality TV has changed and transformed so much within the last few years.

I had been noticing this as well. In more recent years, the men have typically been the dramatic center of their respective seasons. Last season, while I thought all the girls were likeable (sans maybe Ashley), they really added almost nothing to the actual show.
I do think sometimes The Real World can't completely win, though. It seems that when a season is very dramatic, it gets labelled "trashy" (Cancun and Vegas 2, to an extent), and with a season like St. Thomas, which has so far been laid back but with a likeable cast, IMO, it has been labelled too boring or not dramatic enough. It's the same way with the cast member's looks, too. It's either people are too "model-like" or "Abercrombie and Fitch", and not enough diversity, but I've seen complaints about how "ugly" this cast is. Sure there are no Camerans or Mallorys, but the girls are far from ugly, IMO. I don't know, maybe only I've noticed these things haha.

You're definitely not the only one. It goes back to everyone having an opinion. I think there's a very fine line between trashy and fun. Also, what you think is fun when you're 16 might not be as fun when you're 25. Prime example: when I was in college, I'd be able to drink way too much 4-5 days in a row and wake up with no hangover. Now at 26, I have 5 drinks and spend the next day in bed.
I've also seen the complaints about how "ugly" this cast is, and while I personally prefer the clean cut look over the rocker type, I don't think Brandon is ugly. He's just not my type. I'd love to see the complainers put their picture on the Internet for everyone to see. I would bet they'd get people who think they're ugly as well.
It's easy to call someone ugly when you're behind a computer. It's important that this cast (and anyone on tv, really) realize that there are people who just won't like them and that they shouldn't give a damn about it.

I don't understand that reference. Did he say he didn't care about people being killed or something? It just seems like I have missed something for you to put that pairing out there.
It doesn't matter how interesting a backstory is, MTV doesn't edit for it unless it fits into their drama blueprints IMO. I have no idea what Frank's backstory is other than he hid in the closet before coming to the show. I don't think anyone is ugly but the girls are definitely having bad hair days in the salty air LOL. I would rather they make the show edited to be a little less over the top dramatic and maybe a little more upbeat and family friendly and move it to an earlier time slot (among other things).

I think molds is referring to the fact that Trey's dad has been in and out of jail on charges relating to murder.
When it comes to backstories, I agree that editing definitely has a lot to do with it. However, I think the cast does as well. A cast member can talk up their backstory and make themselves as interesting as they want in the casting process, but they may not always decide to talk about it once their actually on the show. On Vegas 2, for example, most of the cast actually had really interesting backstories that related to one another, but we hardly saw any of it. I think in that case it was more about the editing though, because I do remember the cast saying they had bonded over their comparative upbringings.

I definitely agree regarding what people consider fun. Even though I am still in my college years (well I just graduated), I don't necessarily want to watch drunken nonsense. I thought Cancun was entertaining, but wouldn't categorize the cast or season as fun. Whereas in the recent Vegas season, while they were obviously getting hammered every night (looking at you, Adam), that cast was overall incredibly likeable and charismatic in my eyes. I would say they were a fun group. I'd say the same about this current cast and New Orleans 2, despite that cast having a few less than interesting characters (Eric and Ashlee) and one glaring outcast (Ryan).
I also feel the same way you do about their looks. Obviously everybody will have an opinion, and especially with a show like this which many would argue a cast member's looks is a big selling point in whether or not they will be cast. I think all the girls this season are attractive, although I can still acknowledge that they wouldn't be at the top of my list in terms of RW standards. Funnily enough, while I think Laura is an attractive girl, I think she was supposed to be cast as the "hot" one but I prefer Marie's and LaToya's looks. Marie was especially striking when she picked that guy (Max?) up at the bar.
But yes, to be on these shows you probably do need a thick skin, because everybody will have something to say. Sorry for the long post. :o
The thing for me though is that they don't seem to be casting the most interesting stories, they seem to be casting someone with an interesting story that likes to party and can get wild or whatever you want to call it. Like why should I care about Marie? She just comes off as a trashy party girl who I could have gone to high school with. What about Trey? I'm sure plenty of other people went through what he went through but weren't prom king and captain of teams. Laura? Same thing.
To me, Brandon's the only person I'm "interested" in right now because he's not the typical "I have problems but I'm outgoing" type person. I don't hate everyone on the cast, but right now I have no reason to care about anyone but him. There may be some bias in that regard due to being able to relate to him with certain qualities, but it's still better than nothing.

Exactly what I said! Just look at the first line of her bio, "A self-described 'down *** *****,' Marie is one hell of a good time." umm Okay? I remeber reading the bio of each roommate from Brooklyn and LV2 and just thinking "...wow."
IDK what could really make ratings better, except word of mouth of how good it is, etc.
This weeks sounds like itll be good, though, so hopefully ratings increase at least to what the premiere was so we know it got some extra views...
Trey cant wait to see it, apparently it's the one where Robb punches himself & Laura's parents aren't watching it. So I'm kinda excited to see this next episode.
And the people complaining about how this cast is not good looking enough... Don't. It's not cool, and it makes you come off as a self-absorbed *******. To each his own. I happen to think this cast is good looking. Like someone said before, just because there isn't a Mallory or Cameron (might have spelled her name wrong) look alike, doesn't mean the cast isn't good looking.

I totally agree with you. And it also makes you wonder what these people must look like if all they can do is be critical of others' looks. They must be beauty kings/queens themselves!! haha (yeah right)
I don't find them ugly, I just find them...average. No one stands out and wows while some of them come off as that type that is decent looking but thinks they're better looking than they actually are.
I don't think any of the girls are ugly. I'd rather have them than have an Ashley from San Diego. They have personality so I think they did a great casting on the girls. As for the guys, I can't keep my eyes off of Trey. He is hot. Robb's funny personality makes him more attractive. It's a better looking cast than San Diego and Brooklyn....
Why would they even air The Real World on 4th of July? That is not smart because they had to have known the ratings would be bad since everyone was busy seeing fireworks and stuff. Don't they usually cancel The Real World if its on during a holiday? I remember they cancelled the Challenges the week of Thanksgiving.

IDR if they've cancelled showing it on Fourth of July I know they definitely don't show it the week of Thanksgiving or Christmas. They should have waited til maybe this week to begin airing the season at all, rather than show it the first week, not show it the second week, then go back to it?
I heard people complaining of looks, and it really annoyed me. Like torch said, it really makes you wonder how the people criticizing look. And a lot of the people are average/above average. But once in a while, a stunner gets cast. And for me, personality plays into looks. The better the personality the hotter the person.
