It probably won't surprise you that I put my faith in the rule of law -- and a competent defense attorney.
And it probably would not surprise you that I put my faith in genetics, natural order and aging. I think you would be hard pressed to find a baseball scholar that would state that they believe Roger Clemens "reverse aged" via natural means. As far as the government, they are quite inept and with Andy Pettitte either under peer or defense pressure recanting his testimony - Roger will get a pass. He always does. I don't think sports reporters are as easily tricked and he will not be a first ballot hall of famer.
Sports reporters: Well, there is an honorable profession if ever there were one.
I knew that was a can of worms, but I couldn't help myself in the moment. ;) Clearly I have an emotional stake in this conversation.

Cable TV has ruined baseball. Every game is going to be televised somewhere now so players gotta look like All-Stars 24/7. No "who cares" games these days
Ask Ken Griffey Jr. how dumb it is... If you remove the known steroid users, he is the best hitter of that generation. If you don't he isn't in the top 20.
The thing is that we don't know if he didn't use steroids while in Seattle before they had testing for them. That is my point with letting them all in. Also Griffey is a top 3 hitter in the era if you include steroid users.

Keeping good performers out as a matter of policy just churns drama (intentionally IMO to give sports reporters something to yammer about during the off season).
Also Griffey is a top 3 hitter in the era if you include steroid users.
I don't even need to look it up being I know right off the top of my head that Sosa, Mcgwire and Bonds all score higher in important stats than Griffey. They are also all known PED abusers. Now, there is more to the story, like WAR or other ways of gauging players - but it is clear that Barry Bonds head is at least twice as big, LITERALLY, than it was when he was at my alma mater. I think that helped his numbers and ruined Griffey's legacy.

Finally, hope. Not for the Sox season - but for the future. I knew the scouting report said Will Middlebrooks had plus power, but I was not expecting his debut to offer plus power. He was supposed to grow into it. His defensive 3 run homer opened my eyes. He was just swatting at a bad pitch to stay alive and it went park. His second homer tonight was tape measure. He also had that grand slam yesterday. I am sure the kid will struggle, but he is stroking it right now.
Note to Baltimore: Walk Josh Hamilton. Seriously, just walk him. Unbelievable display of hitting prowess. 5-5, 2B, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 4 R

Technically not the right thread but the kid played like a major leaguer Move over MLB, 6-year-old Little Leaguer turns unassisted triple play | Prep Rally - Yahoo! Sports
Misery loves company... ****it B you jinxed us!
Dammit B you jinxed us!
Actually, I think it is more the result of having $77 million in payroll on the DL. :D

Baltimore? Seriously, Baltimore? Ugh :moon:
Verlander is starting to get worked right now. Still, he is pulling back and throwing 100MPH. Sick stuff. Edit: He got the reputation freebie to end the 4th inning, but has surrendered 4 and his pitch count is getting up there.
Yikes, Seattle seems to have taken issue with the Rangers run differential... It's 17-0 in the 4th.
I bet there is no end of game traffic jam for that one.
Very good point. On another note, how are the Sox (with their Triple-A sub team) only 2 1/2 games out of first in the AL East and in last place? Wow. This is why I love baseball. It is a VERY long season. SOS Four of the top four strength of schedule teams in baseball are in the AL East and every team in the AL East has a winning record. That says something.

The top 3 in the AL-East are on losing streaks so they may jump up there to #1. Just never know.

Excellent effort by the Rangers last night. How on earth do you give up 21 runs to the f****** Mariners.
Excellent effort by the Rangers last night. How on earth do you give up 21 runs to the f****** Mariners.
1. Have your starter get shelled. 2. Have no long reliever because he is in the rotation. 3. Bring in your worst bullpen arm because the game is lost already.

I wonder if Boston fans would vote to trade managers if they could.
I wonder if Boston fans would vote to trade managers if they could.
Actually, I don't think Bobby V has been the problem and I think in trading Youk, we turned a corner (much like trading Nomar in 2004.) He was past his prime and becoming a drag on the team. He wanted to play, but he wasn't the best 3rd baseman on the roster anymore... The problem with the Sox this year has not been coaching, but injuries (which was how Youkilis was superseded by Middlebrooks in the first place.) Carl Crawford has not played a single game. Ellsbury has been out since week one. Becket, Lackey, Buchholz are all on the DL and Dice-K is just wobbling off of it. During last night's game on Fox they threw up a stat that the Red Sox have had 9 different center fielders, 7 different left fielders and 5 different right fielders thus far this season. After all that adversity we have won 9 of the last 11 and are only 1.5 games out of a wild card slot. I think the second half of the season is going to bring many joyful beers and Fenway franks (with ketchup) for the faithful. The Red Sox are playing with half their lineup. If they ever get healthy, they are going to start crushing.

Lillibridge is a fast utility player who never developed into an everyday player, and Stewart has been pretty lackluster. It seems like a win-win for both teams.

He's a modern-day BoSox icon, part of the reason I started following them (along with Pedey). We should have asked for more; the White Sox needed him more than we needed to get rid of him (and pay most of his salary to boot). His Red Sox figurine still sits proudly on my top shelf in my office alongside the V-Mart BoSox figurine. Now I actually have a reason to occasionally turn on WGN from time to time :D
