It is way to many people for this format but what is a challenge without at least 28 to 30 cast members.
Plus, the name is not catchy enough, the jersey numbers is weird because no one ever explained why they have those, and you can tell they put so much time into production this challenge and the ratings are a disaster!
And you can't edit a show with a format like this until numbers get smaller but even then it could be too late.
Free Agents could have dropped Preston, Jasmine, Jessica, and Chet and had a cast of 24 that would have been just as good. Instead of dropping people though, I think they should have made better casting choices.
Well its not like people knew the format was "confusing" before the show even aired. problem with thinking people aren't tuning in because of the format or the drama is that no one tuned in on the first episode last week to even see if the format was confusing or the story lines were terrible. No one has even given it that chance so how could that be the reason people aren't tuning in? If it premiered with 3 times the viewers and then they all disappeared then that might be a more credible argument. WE have to figure out why people didn't tune in on day one.

The "confusing" statement was more about how we will continue to see a decline this season.
Have you guys ever been online and ran into a new fan who thinks "Rivals" is "The Challenge" and questioned "When is Rivals coming back for another season?". Not realizing that all challenges reuses players/brings in new ones from RW and changes its format every time even though it's still the same show. All I can do is face palm and hope that's not the mentality of the average challenge viewer.
But yeah, I agree that the title is not appealing at all. I honestly think this should have just been called Duel 3 and have TJ make an announcement about how they're changing the format to get rid of the selection process and make it less predictable. But then that opens up an argument about the cast...
A duel 3 still wouldn't have worked for ratings. Like some one wrote on here the newer viewers are still asking when Rivals is coming back.
Just expect an Exes 2 next season, if there is one. Corny theme challenges are more reliable now days just compared the ratings of Exes (Highest rated season since the ruins) and both rivals to FM2/Cutthroat/Seasons/Free agents so far .

Honestly, I'm totally not liking this season at all. The Draw and the no-alliance stuff are killing this format for me. It's just too much unpredicability right now. Frank vs. Dustin was a fresh rivalry and something that could bring viewers to watch when they face elimination and the draw blew it. There was not a single hype for this. That's really meh.
Besides Chet's "quitting" nothing happened on this two episodes that would get me excited for the following weeks. It was just challenges and nothing more. I think you can't just blame the producers for this, since seemingly nothing really happened.
Let's just hope that next challenge is a Team (Old vs. New) challenge to help some of the newbies getting a fan base (With a twist like the merge on Survivor) and then do a Exes 2 with the newer challengers. I think comebacks from Mark, Darrell, Brad and Derrick would get some viewers and the pool for future challenge paisr would get new energy, then just doing a Exes 2. This theme needs believable pairs.

They have believable pairs Heather/Dustin she would do one for a good amount of money and they will offer her some, Jonna/Zach lived together for 6 months after seasons 2, Jemmye/Knight and some explosion cast that were together for 2- 5 years those are your believable pairs. The others can be random hookups.
BMP is going to go the easy way to saved the show the same way they did after seasons 2 they went with Rivals 2 and a lot of those pairs were not believable. The name/Theme/format will attract viewers by itself like it has been proved in the past.
For exes they just need 2 or 3 believable exes. That's it , ratings will be higher just for the format and the catchy name that will make MTV casual viewers to check out. The casual viewers of MTV though that Priscilla/Nate were exes, Jasmine/Tyrie were exes, bananas/Camila were exes, Mandi/Wes were exes, Sarah/Vinny were exes, Jemmye/Camila were rivals, Emily/Paula were rivals, Jonna/Nany were rivals, TY/Leroy were rivals,Ana/Jess were rivals, Dunbar/Tyrie were real exes and real rivals. In reality none of them were I will put my money they are not taking a risk with another new format and just with Exes 2.

I think they will only do a Exes 2 if Brian/Jenny, Thomas/Hailey, Ct/Diem, Jemmye/Knight and Heather/Dustin say yes to do this. I don't think that other couples would get the viewers to tune in to save the series. Exes worked because of the relationship of CT and Diem and the catastrophic teams that were around them.

If free agents don't increased ratings wise.
All I am saying don't be surprised next challenge is Exes 2. Zach/Jonna would be another pair production would want.
Like I say any couples would get the viewers turn in just with the specific name and theme just look at rivals 2 rivalries.

I agree with this, IMO the draw works but they need to build more tension around the eliminations, dustin vs frank was a great match, because they had a past of fighting and not getting along, and yet when the elimination happened it was really meh, there was no hype like you said. They should have built it like johnny vs CT on rivals I, so the viewers can get excited and root for someone.

I agree that exes could work, but I don't think it's going to pull the numbers like the first exes did, one of the biggest reasons that Exes work was because CT/diem were there, mainly because people wanted to see them together, we need another couple that has the "power" to do that, unfortunately we don't have one .

Agree there is no hype to this season but thats because no one knows who goes in! I dislike this challenge so much I started watching Exes and Rivals II again.
I agree next season should not be an Exes 2 only because they need to take advantage of the fact that Mark, Derrick, Darrell, Brad, Robin, Sarah, Aneesa, Wes, Bananas, CT, Tyler and Rachel wanna do a challenge and have them on their with some new school kids-- add in a gimmick theme (not Old vs. New, while I love that, if Old wins which will probably be the case, many of them will then stop doing challenges and I think you can get a couple more if not more challenges out of a few them). If needs to be a theme that can interact them together and create some strong dynamics and interesting gameplay without The Draw.
Then do a Exes 2. Save that theme for 1 more season and try to build off them next season.
This another reason for bad ratings! The Free Agents trailer was good but wayyyyyy to short and the promos didn't make up for it!
MTV The Challenge: Free Agents Season 25 Trailer - YouTube
Now look at the other trailers. Wayyyy better. They gave us more to look forward too.
The Challenge: Rivals - Trailer - YouTube
The Challenge: Battle of the Exes - Trailer - YouTube
The Challenge: Rivals II - Trailer (HD) - YouTube
The Rivals II trailer was the best imo.
They wouldn't hold exes 2 for another season if ratings for Free Agents don't increase, this show doesn't get renew for 2-4 seasons like old days. The old schools cast member are not their priority cast members no more. That's why people like Tyler have been dropped twice in a row and people like Robin/Rachel/Darrell/Derrick hasn't been asked since seasons 2. Plus the Road Rules team got dropped by production and they didn't decide to do a generic team with the San Diego cast like they did for Vegas.
They have to play safe and smart if the want the show to continue for one or more seasons. The only one of that is to have a theme that will attract the casual viewers just with the name/theme/format the same way they did after Battle of the Seasons 2 with Rivals 2.
It's not to early early for an Exes 2 (It has been 4 challenges since then) Duel 2 was after 3 seasons of the first duel. Rivals 2 was after 2 seasons since the first Rivals.
They would do Exes 2 especially after Explosion was successful real world and it helped the franchise to see one more season.

But this is the problem and they need to hurry up and figure it out. Rivals, Rivals II, and Exes had many old school people and ratings were great! Come Seasons and Free Agents with these New School and a handful of Old School and the ratings plummet!
At the end of the day they need them still it shows in the ratings. Its fans of the show aren't even watching this season and I wonder why, its not just Thursday night. They need at least 8-12 old school a season and the rest new.
If there priority is New School then maybe they should edit them better. I don't even think CT & Bananas are enjoying this challenge.
Oh please no Exes, it would mean for sure Dustin/Jessica will be together once again. I don't want Jessica to ever come back.
It's pretty clear CT & Johnny aren't enjoying it, especially for Bananas since JEK was done and now Paula. It's a new generation and they're the few ones left. Bananas has always said the challenges use to be more fun now it's like a prison, I was surprised they got to go out this episode since the last time they did was Exes2.
But back to Exes that would mean hopefully Cohutta or Adam(possibly not) will be back to be partnered with Nany. It would be interesting to see how they'll pair them since some have numerous 'Exes' such as Zach, Nany, Jasmine, Jonna, Jordan, and ofc CT.

I guess you aren't aware there has been a recent push in the TV/Film industry for shorter trailers to reduce spoilers.
In my opinion the best trailer was BOTSeasons

Oh god, everytime I see that trailer I cringe watching Wes and Jonna's weird 'grind' dance.
I would say Rivals 2 trailer is probably the best but Rivals 1 > Rivals 2.

I think Exes 2 would rely too much on the new "Kids relationships" as Mark Long says it. Even the Explosion season lost a lot of momentum the last episodes. So I think Old vs. New would be the better move with people that have a fanbase and it is scatchy or something like "Heroes vs. Villians".

Totally forgot about RW Explosion coming up on the next season. Ugh, now I do want Exes 2 so they won't invite them since they basically did go though that their whole season.
If they follow through Good vs. Bad (There are no heroes in these challenges other than you can aruge, Emily) I hope they bring only Brain & Jen for Bad guys and Cory so he can embarrass himself. Will never forget Thomas beating him in a arm wrestling.

Well they don't need to do that for The Challenge lol
Clearly the ratings would suck going up against Scandal. I have plenty friends who watch the challenge, but will choose Scandal instead. Hopefully now that the season is over ratings will pick up.

That's my thought as well. Not saying we'll see an immediate increase in ratings next week, but it is still too early to pass final judgment IMO.
This makes the excuses about BOTS having too many newbies seem irrelevant, this is literally 80% of Rivals 2 cast, with the same exact amount of four newcomers.

Completely false. The problem is they keep bringing back the people on that season that many didn't care about. CT & Johnny can only do so much for rating. The female cast is awful outside of a handful of people. The draw is idiotic and wasn't well thought out. There's no way to market it. Another Duel would have been 1000x better for ratings

Who were the ones they care about?
You also have to take in consideration that some people said no.

A lot of people said no this time.
I'm surprised some of you don't like the draw and the killing of alliances. That's one of the most appealing aspects of this season to me. No more BS where people and their buddies just conspire to throw everybody else in and sit back on elimination day. For years alliances have made a large part of these shows incredibly predictable. I don't want predictable. I want it to be possible on any given night for someone to go in. I want people like Johnny to have to actually go into an elimination and fight for their lives like rookies or people that aren't in their boys club have to do all the time. I only wish we had all of JEK on this season and a few more bigger names.

I agree 100%. Most people I talk to like this format because it keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Unpredictability doesn't equal ratings. Ruins, Rivals, Exes, Rivals 2 all were pretty predictable, but they have the shows best ratings in this era. Fresh Meat 2, The Duel 2, Cuttroat and now Free Agents not that good. I know, I should wait for the final judgment on FA, but I don't think it has that spark to get a lot of viewers attention. And if Johnny does good on the daily challenge, but his Team loses, I don't think he should be afraid to go home, but the draw cuts this fairness and it's basically more luck than ever on the challenge.
