I'm not saying racism is a good thing, not saying that at all. Maybe it would be interesting to see an extreme racist person and see how they get along with open-minded people, or it could be irritating like how seeing homophobe Zach was when he was living with 2 gay roommates on SD2.
And sorry, so I didn't know the difference between Viacom and Directv so you're yelling at me for this?
Let's just get back on topic and talk about the RATINGS of ST. THOMAS.
I'm not yelling at you, just correcting the fact you misstated regarding who was responsible for MTV disappearing from DIRECTV.
I don't know if an obviously racist cast member is a good idea, my point was about the interaction between the City of Portland and the cast. I pretty sure that taking such a position openly would be a bad idea in Portland. It's a very liberal/libertarian community. I'd be very surprised if any local club would allow an openly racist person to espouse such beliefs/behavior in their business. That would have to be a factor in BMP's approach to local companies in seeking permission for the company to shoot inside any local business. Not advising the business in advance of such a possible polarizing character in their midst could possibly give rise to anything for baring the cast, to withdrawal of their city permit to shoot, to a suit against BMP by any company that felt mislead. As a producer, I'd have to think twice about the risks before casting such a person.
(If you're referring to my use of All Caps, that is what I consistently do for media companies. It is a habit from the way most business news services reported financial information via the old financial teletype that I used to read on the radio as a news reporter decades ago at WMT in Cedar Rapids, IA. )
Let's make sure we have the facts here. VIACOM told DIRECTV to cease showing all 27 VIACOM channels. DIRECTV didn't pull them.
Being a racist is not a pathway to success in Portland. It's a very inclusive community. In my occasional trips there in recent years, I've found the people there to open and non-judgmental. Open racism is unlikely to be well received by the community or by their elected representatives.
I agree, if somebody is openly racist and he/she would just COME OUT like that on T-E-L-E-V-I-S-I-O-N he/she/it...well to be 100% honest, this person would sign his own social death warrant with BLAZING MULTICOLORED LETTERS ! I mean, there's no way this would pass and the network that shows this person would get hammered from all sides. Im not a casting person but i don't think that a network is THAT suicidal about getting ratings. Oh yes, im sure that executives would go very far to have ratings *cough* Jersey Shore *cough* but this would be way overdone.
Also, considering that when a castmate, touches another castmates he/she/it/whatever gets evicted...the RW house would just be a revolving door of people fighting with this person/thing. On the funny side, it would probably hold a record for MTV as the reality TV show with the most castmates during one season.
Does anyone know what the rating for Wakebrothers that premiered after Real World at 11:00 was? I can't find it anywhere, which should imply that it did not do well at all.

I haven't ever seen 11pm ratings anywhere.

The public ratings reports are only available for prime time programming (8 -11) or by category (like morning news shows). Most everything else is reported by exception.
TVByTheNumbers.com has occasionally posted ratings for a few select shows at 11 PM, but I believe that info was provided to them in a network press releases.
V1, would you say, based on your expertise in reality TV, that the real world is in jeopardy of not being renewed?
Experience, please, not expertise. If I were an expert, I'd be incredibly rich and living on the south coast of France with a vacation home in the Swiss Alps.
Ah, if there were an easy answer to your question...
I think smart people at BMP, MTV, MTV Networks, VIACOM, and at ad agencies are scratching their heads about RW and its ratings. Critics for some time have been saying that the show's shelf life has expired because it is no longer outrageous to mainstream culture and attractive to the 13-30 crowd. I think RW is getting a lot of attention, but I don't think it is in immediate danger. Frankly, I don't know if MTV owns the program, having bought it originally from BMP in 1992, or if BMP retains the ownership. That factor looms significantly for me in knowing how much trouble the series may be in. Among the factors I think bear on the answer to your question are:
1. Is there something better in the wings at MTV just awaiting the opportunity to capture the 10 PM Wednesday audience?
2. If the current ratings average for the past three seasons are likely to be the norm going forward (discounting the lows of this season and the highs of Las Vegas), is the money MTV makes from the RW make it more profitable than any other replacement currently available?
3. Will, can or should the challenges be profitably maintained without RW as a feeder source? If so, for how long?
4. Can or should RW's format be markedly changed to make it more relevant to today's potential audience.
5. What percentage of RW viewers only watch RW and the Challenges on MTV? What affect on the network's overall ratings will there be if they do not return to watch other MTV programming?
6. Can the demographic for the show be expanded to recover some of the audience lost to VH1?
7. Should MTV networks move the Challenges to VH1? (If the contract allows)
8. Should MTV change production companies for RW (if owned by MTV)?
9. Should and will MTV direct production team, format, casting and/or other changes to RW and they did in part for the recently concluded Challenge taping set to air later this year?
I don't really have enough information to state with authority the answers to the above in the minds of MTV's execs. If MTV decided to pick up one of our shows that we have optioned to **** Clark Productions, or one that we pitched to them directly, then I think they would have profitable ratings, given that all our show's production costs are well below RWs.

Sad. Last night was actually one episode I enjoyed. If the ratings continue to drop, would they just cancel the next season? Even though they already almost have a cast.
If this series gets cancelled without ever casting an Asian Male I'm going to be devastated. Honestly, casting an Asian male would help ratings so much because the Asian community would literally gather to support it solely due to his race. I know I would being a Korean-American.

So you are saying that if they cast an Asian male on the next season it would help the ratings? I honestly don't see the logic there.
It truly is sad to see such a good RW Season get such bad ratings I'd understand if this season sucked but last nights episode was really good in my opinion
I really don't think there's anything MTV can do at this point for the ratings to turn around. No matter how good the season may be, it there's no ratings, there's no advertising, and if there's no advertising there's no ratings.

LOL I thought I was the only person who noticed this. I always complain to people about them never casting an Asian make. I swear they REFUSE to do it. Some people say "Well, they probably just don't try out." BS. Get er done BMP!

Not trying to sound racist or anything, but maybe the Asian males who try out just aren't all that interesting? Not saying that they're "boring" because of their race, but maybe they just don't have anything interesting to bring to the table of reality tv? I hardly ever see any Asian males on any reality shows, TBH, so either they just aren't interesting enough, or they just don't try out for it.

because the Asian community would gather to watch it solely to support him. People who don't even watch the show at all would watch it because there's finally an Asian male.

That's a pretty big assumption to say that the majority of Asians in the country would go out of their way to watch the show because they put an Asian man on the show. I doubt that most of them even realize, or even give a **** that there hasn't been one yet.
I wish I had the video of Steve Byrne (the Asian/Irish comedian) talking about races and equality in the country with Asians right now. It'd probably explain why there hasn't been one.

I think that is baloney and a cop-out to be honest. Also why do they always have to have more whites than any other race on the show as well. Then there's the looks, size, weight as well. There's no much I could ***** about you just don't know. And yeah it sucks such a good season gets bad ratings. Pure horse****.

I must confess that these ratings make me very sad. I remember not that long ago charting the ups and downs of ratings during the season and being really excited when we appeared in the top 10 listing each week at medialifemagazine.com.
I do think the cast is interesting and more fun compared to some. I hope they show it during the challenge and people come to like them.
I've complained more than once about recent season editing, but I'm highly critical about such things. I like old-school story telling. There can't be a "Pedro" every season, but I always hope for something that pulls in into the episode and then frustrates men that I have to wait a week for the next episode.
Compared to most reality shows, RW is always done well, even when I'd do something differently myself.
Maybe if people need a break from the Olympics next week, we can set a season high. Spread the word!
I had family in town so I had buffered the first 3 episodes of this season on my DVR, which then promptly decided to puke it's entire contents into the nethervoid. No reruns airing that I can see and it's not showing up in the On Demand section (yet... generally they do for a while after the season concludes). As I'm not a fan of watching stuff online (commercials, buffering, small screen, less than perfect streaming to my tv via connectors, etc), I'll have to wait for the season to end to see this season. Sadly thanks to AT&Ts piece of hardware ******** out, I can't contribute to the viewership this time around.

That's weird, I have the last five weeks on my OnDemand. I don't have AT&T though.
I feel the same way Bill Simmons does about this show. They definitely needed some hotter girls on this show to pull in the casual fans. I think the die-hard real world fans are the only ones watching this show.
I really doubt hotter girls brings in the ratings like that. I do think that the majority of viewers right now are diehards. Even on things like the Afterbuzz podcast which recaps the episodes, hosts are not even show up every other week. Seems like they can't be bothered to watch the show.
The interest in this season is terrible. I hope the challenge still does well.
