MTV was marketing Portland to its existing MTV audience. People may be impressed by the replays of past RW seasons; but, again, the audience was internal to MTV. Sure, they did some outreach via email to people who had previously registered at MTV.com. Unfortunately for RW, they lost their prior audience for good reasons. That old audience has so many more interesting options now on cable or satellite on Wed at 10 PM, that expecting the "old school" viewers to easily return is unrealistic. For a relatively small cost, MTV could have contracted 30 of their popular RW/RR cast members email all the people with MTV.com accounts. That outreach would have received a much greater positive response.
That's a **** good idea, V1
I've never understood that. MTV really has nothing to offer tbh (I love Awkward though).
I hate Awkward. I love Jenna/Ashley Rickards but the rest of the cast and excluding Nikki from the Mickey Mouse Club who plays the guidance counselor the show sucks.
Just curious, did you watch the premiere?
Do you think the rating should have be better?
I did watch on DVR, but admit to being distracted while working on my taxes.
In order to answer your second question, I have to make one assumption for practical purposes. That assumption is that viewers should have abandoned what they did watch in favor of RW. Here is RW's cable competition on Wed at PM.

And the network ratings at 10 PM.

10:00PM NBC Chicago Fire 1.8 5 6.90
ABC Nashville . 1.5 4 5.14
CBS CSI - R . 1.3 4 6.92
Obviously, any number of people could have abandoned these shows and elected to watch RW instead. The bottom line, of course, is that they didn't.
Should people have watched RW, meaning that it was better TV than other shows at 10 PM? I'm not sure. Frankly, the outdoor hot tub and guys bringing home women is hardly new, and neither is the "fight" that ensued after their departure. I can think of a number of episodes from "Hollywood" which had the same core storyline. Maybe those were the best rated episodes of "Hollywood" and BMP was thinking this needed to be in the opening episode to show some strength.
Duck Dynasty is not my kind of entertainment, but it is far more original in today's market than is RW. DD was #1 in the timeslot. Millions of people preferred it to RW. I honestly can't say they were wrong.
If anyone has the time, this is a very good explanation and read about why the ratings were low and the future of the show

Why do people think just because it wasn't drama on the first episode its gonna be boring? of course there is no drama because its their FIRST DAY in the house. And the reason the ratings was low because of the heat game
I watched TRW for the first time EVER! Always avoided it, never wanted to watch it. But since I got hooked on the Challenge two years ago, I've been planning to watch a season of TRW from start to finish. Did it with Portland and I actually kinda liked it. I don't think I will ever LOVE the show, because I only usually only watch reality-competition shows.
It's a shame that it had such bad ratings and that it might be canceled. :(

I disagree with you regarding the Heat game. It is almost just as likely from a statistical standpoint that RW also lost viewers to Duck Dynasty, The Big Bang Theory, Psych and the Walking Dead marathon.
Had Portland aired after Vegas, we wouldn't have this problem. San Diego had an amazing rating the first episode because it followed Vegas. I don't care what anyone says, SD as a whole was the knife that killed Real World.
I remember Bill Simmons saying Vegas 2 was a home run cast with Naomi being the only that didnt bring multiple storylines to the table. You can't have the success that Vegas 2 had and follow it up with SD2. Which was horrendous all the way around. From the cast, to the storylines, it all was completely dreadful. You're right, MTV needed Portland to follow Vegas to keep the ratings strong, but totally struck out with SD2, and consequently it could turn out to be the death of the franchise.
After watching this new trailer. I'm 100 % sure that Ratings will get better.
It may contain spoilers.

Dang..so the cut Joi down to only 1 full episode? Next week Marlon also talks about having *** with a man, so maybe that will bring ratings up since there are already articles about it online
Wait there's more than one article? Maybe he should've kept that to himself though because it may hurt his chances of getting a job. I hope that wasn't cruel by the way, just the way I feel.

Being ******** hurts his chances of getting a job? That's illegal in almost half of the United States.

Vegas also worked because collectively the cast had chemistry and it didn't seem forced like San Diego, St. Thomas and I'm not sure about Portland it's too early to tell. That season didn't really need to rely on fights to get viewers, it just had really good story lines along with a great cast and that's something that every season since then has been lacking.
I'm honestly SHOCKED by this. The premiere had so much promotion going for it, I don't understand how it could possibly do so bad?
I can't help but simply attribute it to the fact that the past two seasons were pretty lackluster and made people lose interest.
Hopefully ratings can pick up.
I would rather watch 16 and pregnant than ridiculousness
Ridiculousness is hilarious though

Nia has said on Twitter that she's coming during the 3rd episode.
It sucks that Joi is leaving though, she's been getting a lot of positive feedback, a lot of people are probably gonna be ****** and announce that "they aren't watching anymore" when she leaves.
Being ******** hurts his chances of getting a job? That's illegal in almost half of the United States.
Pretty sure is illegal in all the states yet it still happens in 50/50 of them.

When the show is only promoted inside its own tiny MTV bubble, why would you think the promotion of it would be successful? To me, the show should have been marketed strongly to the former challenge, RW and RR audiences who have left as they became older and their interest changed, or became bored, ambivalent or disgusted with MTV.
Would people really be ****** about Joi leaving? This is just my opinion, but watching the premiere it seemed obvious that they weren't putting any focus on her since she'll be gone soon anyway. Maybe some did like her, but honestly I didn't see near enough of her to form an opinion.

the real world should be more like bgc

worddtoyuremothhaa 17 hours ago
Just know she is the only reason I'm watching this season lol. Real World is so played out now, and she definitely bringing something that has been missing in this show. Hope she doesn't disappoint!
Queen Nia. <3
This Had The BGC Vibe Like Dayummm Nia Bomb Af :D <3
But whatevers gonna potentially get a few more viewers I'll support. *shrugs*
Any talk of the show being renewed or cancelled at this point would obviously be speculation, but I would like to think even if the ratings remain below average all season the show will be back but admittedly I just have an optimistic viewpoint on it. I know it's been used over and over to the point of it being dragged trough the dirt but in reality MTV does not have multiple blockbuster hit shows on it's current resume. Even if the show does not do stellar, to me, it's not as if there are 10 other shows that are going to be blowing Portland out of the water to the point of the show not having a place or an available spot on the network.
If the show is cancelled it was a fun ride and unfortunately it was just meant to be. In saying this, however, I would hope we could try to refrain on the "sky is falling" mentality until the season is actually finished out and we have cold hard facts in front of us.
Here's hoping the ratings do improve over the season and we can be enjoying future seasons of this (mostly) great program.

Sorry that sentence was meant to read:
"Pretty sure murder is illegal in all the states yet it still happens in 50/50 of them."

No 50/50 - murder happens in every state.
Anyway I'm super confusing. Mainly because I can't write in full sentence, but what I'm trying to say is just because it is illegal does mean it doesn't happen
