Real World: San Diego (2011) - Ratings

I don't see the ratings for the San Diego season getting any better and they might not show an episode during the week of Thanksgiving which can hurt ratings. I think the only time we will see high ratings for the Real World is when it's a season premiere.
It could possibly beat DC out for the lowest rated season. At least that's how it's shaping up with these first four episodes. It could get better though, hopefully, if they get off this intense stuff. Episode 1: SD - 1.949 (Viewership) 1.2 (18-49) DC - 1.881 (Viewership) 1.0 (18-49) Episode 2: SD - 1.224 (Viewership) 0.7 (18-49) DC - 2.020 (Viewership) 1.1 (18-49) Episode 3: SD - 1.499 (Viewership) 0.8 (18-49) DC - 1.840 (Viewership) 1.0 (18-49) Episode 4: SD - 1.296 (Viewership) 0.8 (18-49) DC - 1.792 (Viewership) 1.0 (18-49)
Not surprising that it appears to be a bust. If you look at the pre-show interest in the SD season, not even vevmo cared very much. If BMP's most rabid fan base interest is only mildly interested, the dynasty is on very shaky ground, imo. I admit to watching 2-3 episodes of the Cancun season, which I found ridiculous. This year, I haven't even watched the trailer. Zero interest from someone who has, except as noted above, not missed a minute since the first season.

I wonder if they just threw this season together expecting it to be the last under their contract and now they are focusing on the next season needing to be huge to save the show again so they are just half-booty editing it. My gut instinct, however, is that BMP is making so much money off the Kardashians that they are milking for every penny that they just don't care about saving the Real World.

I'm sick of the gay issues this season and want to see a focus on something else, but the next episode is about them and the one after that is too. That's 5 out of the first 6 issues that revolve around gay culture and the problems they face in society. Fine, but that's WAY too many episodes, especially this early in the season to focus on one issue. This season has reminded me why I never used to watch the Real World, because a lot of the time it's pointless.

I'll admit, from day one when I learned about this season, I had very little interest. The cast just didn't look like one that would interest me. I had hoped that would turn around once I started watching but right now, I find the show mildly amusing. I'll finish out the season but man... they really need to get back on the ball for the next show.

I'm the same way -- I was definitely the base of Real World...and as u know, I made it really far in auditions. But lately, just don't care...not because of my age, but because of the show is predictably bi-polar. There aren't any surprises on this show...and even though, there are some great plots sometimes -- those get overlooked because of bad editing, marketing, and us just not caring for the people we are watching. Want to make the show interesting again? Put 7 nervous kids living in a trailer in Detroit and show us a commentary on urban poor. Put together a group of social conservatives on Fire Island or P-town where they live in a community dominated by gay people. Go to Nashville and show us a group of aspiring young performers. Send the cast to Amsterdam and let us see what happens when 8 young people live in the Red Light District and do legal drugs. There are so many interesting concepts for them to do, but instead...they have gone the safe route by going back to cities like New Orleans, Vegas, and San Diego. And now people are getting bored with it. I'm not saying for them to make the show trashy. My ideas above are heavily themed. Seasons that are still in line with the shows underlying social commentary base that made it so popular. The catch is they need to break barriers like the show did in the 90s. They have lost that and as a result, they've lost market share.

Or Real World: Japan and help out. Don't get me wrong I love seeing the trashy RW every now and then but when it's too consistent it's a drag.

The weird thing about RW that I've noticed is, when you look at older seasons like San Diego, Denver or even Austin... there was this element of surprise, you never knew what to expect. Robin and Brad getting arrested, Brooke's meltdown, Wes and Nehemiah's intense fight with Rachel, Danny and Melinda’s engagement, etc... You don't really see moments like that on RW anymore, moments where you're on the edge of your seat. I will admit that I was proud of Vegas cast members because they finally got the ratings back up to 2 million for most of the entire season, which is good considering the ratings during previous seasons. And like many on here, there's something off about this season that just isn't holding my interest for the first time ever (I even LOVED the D.C. season). I'm not sure if it's the lack of chemistry or the constant gay bashing but most of the cast members come off as very unlikeable and plain, or then you have Frank who isn't THAT bad but goes so over-the-top that you end up becoming irritated by him.
Totally agree with the posts here. Imo, Real World was starting to get good again with B2NO and B2LV, but this season is completely dropping the ball... I haven't even watched the most recent episode yet nor do I feel like it, lol. =/

The reason seasons like Austin, Denver, Both Las Vegas, Both New Orleans, Chicago and etc. because of the crazy after crazy moments. With Danny's black eye the first night, Danny and Melinda's engagement, Wes and Danny's or maybe it was Nehmiah's box of number (The original Pauly and Vinny), Brooke's freakouts, Paula's freakouts, Jemmye's drunken night on St. Patricks, Nany revealing she was beat and her dad situation, Dustin everything, the fork getting thrown in Las Vegas 1. And the most entertaining thing this season was a vase getting broken and that happened every episode in LV2. And even if you don't have drama you need to have a fun personality and no one in SD2 has it. I remember 26 was the last contracted season a couple years ago and I'm glad it isn't ending like this. I hope next season is great.
Imo, Real World was starting to get good again with B2NO and B2LV, but this season is completely dropping the ball...
I completely agree, It makes me mad that these people were cast to be honest, I just can't understand it. Built some nice momentum and started gaining in viewership with Back to New Orleans leading into Back to Las Vegas only to than have this Back to San Diego crap and lose everything built up the last 2 seasons.

I really hope that this season picks up and just took them a while to warm up but I doubt it even though I still like this season. I really didn't care for Cancun-New Orleans 2 and Las Vegas 2 was alright but people hyped it up to much.

This is a season that would have benefited most from going back to half-hour episodes. There just isn't anything or anyone interesting enough to hold viewers for a whole hour. My guess is that it isn't that people aren't watching any of the show so much as it it that they flip away if anything else is on.
I don't think that they need to send them to some drug infested neighborhood or to some rioting country. But they need to start casting some Interesting people who will bring something to the show other then sex, Booze, and Clubbing. Casting a Bunch of pretty drunken College kids is not gonna cut it anymore.

I don't even watch the Real World anymore but it makes me sad the show is done for. I still want it to do well because I've been watching it for so long but I've grown out of it. I had zero interest in Vegas when it was on but actually watched it all in one day online and I liked it. Still love the challenges though, but I don't make it a priority to watch them and I sure as hell don't watch them over and over like I used to. It's a sad sad day when I would rather watch the Kardashians/Real Housewives over the Real World.
Really? Doesn't seem like it to me.
Yeah it seems like the DC effect all over again where they tried to cast people who are interesting, like Alex, but they just come off as really, really boring on TV.
That's what they tried to do this season, and you see how that's working out.
LOL, exactly! Not saying I want the show to only be about booze, hook ups and fights but obviously that is what attracts the viewers to a certain degree. Look at JS. That show is the epitome of drinking, hooking up and trivial storylines yet they manage to pull in 6/7 million viewers a week. I think RW just needs get back to casting more INTERESTING/Complex cast members, the ones who people either love or hate. Also, more interesting storylines. Vegas did so well because everyone had such strong personalities, which in return created for a season full of good storylines.

But it had much more depth than other seasons, it was awesome. I guess they can't always hit the mark, but it's the second time in 4 years there is a mediocre cast for a "serious" season so it's a bit worrisome. On another note, sometimes I wonder what would've happened if they had cast Knight, Eric, Ty, Andrew, Jemmye, Ashlee (the one with the nice lips) and Emily all together. That would've made one great season!

From all the various clues I have seen around the web, it seemed like Ryan drank like a fish or at least got plastered everytime he drank but they just didn't show it which I assume was because he was being recalled to war and might be killed and they didn't want him to look bad. The problem isn't the drinking v. the more serious issues so much as it is that nobody they cast seems to be able to articulate a single idea in an interesting way. People act out but cannot carry on a legit conversation. One of the things I liked about Mike Manning was that he could sit in front of the camera and talk about his past and his issues and then proactively pursue them. It wasn't done for camera time and to get a response from the roomies--it was him dealing and growing. I cannot say that opinion of a cast member being a quality person the same way about anybody else I have seen in any recent season. People interest me more than Mike because they are such entertaining messes, but I find him more respectable and I used to find most on the show that way, but not anymore.

I think it's the editing, casting, and one-hour format that does not work for seasons not centered around alcohol. The editing was much better back in the day with more storytelling. They could use popular music too, not free ****ty indie band music, to set the tone and weren't reliant on the music to indicate the tone of the scene to the viewer. Seattle, Boston, New Orleans 1, and Chicago are strong examples of highly-rated drama-filled seasons with intelligent people, especially Seattle, not centered around alcohol and hooking up. Mostly sane, intelligent people too. Good job assignments that led to interhouse conflict, especially Seattle and New Orleans with the cast dealing with job hierarchy issues, good roommate drama, and not all centered around booze and hookups. DC sucked, but it could have been stronger had the editors not made it all about Emily and Ty's relationship. The thirty minute episodes just work better for these too, there's no filler like San Diego 2's alarm clock prank wars in the second episode. Not to say booze is all lazy reality TV. The RW: NOLA2 Jemmye St. Patrick's Day episode was great and the editing was too. They went nearly 30 minutes or so without a talking head, and just let the story tell itself.

I think another reason for the ratings decline is BMP's decision to switch to 6 roommates instead the usual 7 this season. Why they made this move, I will never know.

Notice that the seasons where there is no person with an uncommon name always seem to be more boring! When everyone is the cast has a generic name like Frank, Alex, Ashley, Emily, Andrew, Mike its always a mediocre season. However, throw in a Nany, Beya, Coral, Colie, Parisa, Shavonda, Jemmeye, Flora, Ruthie, Johanna, Cohutta, Bronne and BAM! INSTANT SUCCESS! Just saying.. lol.
