RW/RR: The Ruins - Ratings

I was watching a repeat today (on demand of course, because they repeats are never on MTV) and I was thinking about this thread. I've come to the conclusion that the low ratings should be blamed on MTV. It's almost like they don't want the show to do good. The first episode got poor ratings because they barely promoted, and it was a downhill slope from there. Plus they never show repeats, and I can't think of a logical reason for them to not show repeats. Ratings may not be as high as they want them to be, but that's just throwing away money if they only play each episode once. A lot of the timeslots where they could play repeats they fill with shows that aren't even from MTV (South Park, For the Love of Ray J, ect.). A lot of people say the ratings may be low because they focus too much on Johnny, Evan and Kenny. I don't think this is a huge factor, but it does contribute to the declining ratings. Every challenge has focused on a select group of people. In the longrun, people become attached to these people (examples: Coral, Mike, Katie) and tune into the challenges to see these people. Now that they have replaced these people with JKE, older fans have a hard time relating with the new "in-crowd." People also blame Casey and the fact that the outcome is so predictable. I do not thnk this is a big issue. A lot of people claim that Battle of the Sexes 1 is their favorite challege, and the girls lost most challenges that season. The Gauntlet 3 was very popular, and the rookies rarely won. I think it would help if they had more silly challenges. Take The Inferno 1 for example. A lot of the challenges involved running around in chicken suits or dangling over buildings, and that was a popular season. I think the cast of the Ruins was one of the best they've had in a long time, so it upsets me that the season is doing so poorly. I really wish they play repeats more frequently. They need to show a marathon at some point so people can get caught up. I'd like to see the next challenge do well so there will be a future for challenges.
They need to show a marathon at some point so people can get caught up.
They have tried that in the past, but it didn't work out. Actually, there was a decrease in viewers the week the marathon was shown, if I remember correctly.

This show is lame. The only person I'm rooting for anymore is Sarah. I used to like the challenges, and now I can only watch passively if for no other reason than to chat with you guys about it. :girl_to_take_umbrag
I figure a lot of the men who watch, do so for the competition aspect. I want to see Challenges and Intense Elimination rounds.
I am a female and I also watch for the competition aspect. I wish there were more challenges/face-offs than the silly drama. It should be 70% competition and 30 % drama, not the other way around.
^ I feel the 1 hour format changed the way challenges are done. I remember before in those half hour shows. They will mostly have only challenges. Not a lot of house drama involved.
If JEK disappeared tomorrow or did the next 5 challenges I would care less. They don't make me watch the show. Good or bad I have been a fan of the show for many years and will continue to be. There needs to be a balance and they don't have that right now especially in the editing.
I agree with you.
Every week I see the pathetic ratings I can't help but smile. At the end of the contract, the challenge should be canceled.
Does anyone have an average series rating of like the past 5 challenges? I'm interested to know how much it's declined. Hopefully this is a signal to BMP that things need to change. I think a contributing factor is that sometimes the show is too "serious" people like comedic things sometimes in shows. Viewers like to laugh at and make fun of people, thats why the Vh1 love shows are so popular is because they have some of the most bizarre people. I think the missions need to be less survivor-like as well and more big brother-like.
Does anyone have an average series rating of like the past 5 challenges?
Hm, I don't think that information is available. I do think that the decline started at The Inferno 3, it is the lowest rated challenge to date with The Island being the second-lowest, I believe. The Gauntlet 3 did extremely well in the ratings, but after that season they just crashed to the floor with The Island, The Duel 2, and now The Ruins. The Duel 2 premiere ratings were mediocre I think, 1.7 million viewers isn't so bad for an MTV show, but for a challenge? Its a bit of a dissapointment. The Duel 2 went out a fighter however, with 2.2 million in the finale and The Real World: Cancun followed the same route... but The Ruins is way down there in the 1.3-1.5 million range. However, episode 8 did end up back in the 1.5 million range, so hopefully it can get higher from there. EDIT: Never mind. Here it is!
The Duel I The full season of The Duel was seen by 83 million viewers. It was also ranked #1 for its time period of Thursdays 10pm – 10:30pm among 12-34 years olds on cable. The finale of this Real World Road Rules Challenge The Duel on Thursday January 18th was #1 for ages 12-34 at the 8pm – 11pm timeslot on cable having a 3.04 rating. As a further note MTV.com received its highest day of streams in its history on January 18th after The Duel’s finale, only trailing the 2006 VMAs, as it recorded 2 million streams for The Duel content. 1.3 million streams to the MTV online reunion special alone. The Inferno III & The Gauntlet III The Gauntlet 3 reached over 64 million viewers according to MTV estimates. MTV also revealed in a press release that The Gauntlet 3 was number 1 in cable on Wednesdays 10 to 11pm among the ages of 12 to 34. The full season delivered an impressive 2.4 P12-34 rating up 56% from the prior Inferno 3 Challenge average.
The cast of the ruins wasnt bad at all, and while I miss the old schoolers, we gotta realize they aren't comning back, **** Im slowing warming up to JEK. The bad thing with this challenge, was how it was set up with such a stacked team vs a not so stacked team. The concept on paper for them was probably good, and **** it was a nice idea if the challengers could've actually upset the Champions, but sadly after the Wes drama ended, and with only the Darrel/Brad fight to help, this challenge has gone downhill. Hopefully after the next challenge, the spring one will be something different. I don't blame them for trying something new, it worked with the Duel, just didnt work with the Island or Ruins. Hopefully spring challenge will be Duel 3 or a Battle of the Sexes 3 to even out the big challenges. Also I said it before and it should be stressed..online watching has gone up a lot in the past few years, hopefully MTV checks out the internet traffic on who watches these challenges online to add them to the ratings total..the number could be higher.
The Ruins finds itself with a gain this week. Episode 9 Ratings: Real World / Road Rules: The Ruins - 1.607 million viewers - 1.0/2 HH - 1.0/3 A18-49 Note, here are the finale ratings for both The Hills and The City: The Hills: - 1.715 million viewers - 1.2/2 HH - 1.0/3 A18-49 - 2.3/6 W18-34 The City: - 1.586 million viewers - 1.1/2 HH - 1.0/3 A18-49 - 2.3/7 W18-34 I think the finale of every show always does better than the episode previous to it, so I think we could see The Ruins beating both The Hills and The City in finale numbers! Also, MTV is showing more repeats for Episode 9 than they usually do for the other episodes, with several repeats coming this week. One tonight (Thursday), 3 this Saturday, and one 5 PM airing on Sunday.
Wow I am surprised that a bad episode went up in ratings...
well u dont know its a bad episode until it ends. I'm guessing the Brad/Darrel fight and the cliffhanger ending from the last episode caused some more people to watch. False hope is lovely.
The Duel 2 Averaged around 1.7 million, so if The Ruins can keep fighting and only lose 100,000 viewers or so...it will not be a death knell. That aside, these numbers are series highs, not averages...
Im so glad The Ruins have rebounded from the low ratings they were at around the 3rd and/or 4 th ep.. is not that they are huge ratings, but under MTV current standards, i think they are good enough, personally i have enjoyed The Ruins as a whole.. also i think FM2 can keep it up or do a little better, since i think the concept itself was very appealing to fans. (aside from the feelings regarding the current dinasty born on it)
Wanna put money on it?
Well, no Johnny or Evan for the JEKD haters.. but Kenny for the JEKD groupies.. there is Wes for the Westophers.. (plus Danny for the Austin fans) Landon, Darrell, Jillian and Jenn for the supporters of the (Semi) Old School.. Evelynn, who has (after the island) boatloads of followers.. CJ and Sarah for new blood.. and Katelynn for the curious or for those looking for controversy.. plus a lot of new people to meet (to like or dislike), and the format is for me one of the best overall.. so, maybe im wrong, but i think i have reasons to be hopeful. :)
Lance, Darrell, Jillian and Jenn for the supporters of the (Semi) Old School.. :)
You mean Landon? and i don't think Jenn (or Jillian and Landon for that matter) is considered old school. There really aren't any "old school" on this challenge.
yes, i meant Landon, lapsus mentis.. there are no true veterans like Veronica or Syrius.. even though i think Darrell does qualify.. but thats why i specifically said Semi Old School..
Jenn isn't old school at all, but Jillian could be considered a semi vet.
How is Darrel not old school?
IMO anyone before fresh meat is "old school."
It's very nice to see a little increase as it might mean they can climb out of the hole just enough for there to be hope.
Im coming to the conclusion that one of the reasons the ratings are so down, is because MTV is quite frankly over saturated with reality tv. Its obvious they are no longer "Music" Television, and more of a reality tv show, back in the olden days of the challenges there wasnt so much **** on mtv. I think the downward spiral is not just on the challenges but MTV as a whole, and quite frankly I dont know who runs MTV these days but they've turned into a joke of a network. What was once edgy, hip, has become reality laden **** with stupid sound bites and everyone looking for their 15 minutes of fame. If MTV where to go back to the music roots, keep RW, RR/RW challenge, True Life and say the Hills as their only reality programs I'd bet you things would change.
IMO anyone before fresh meat is "old school."
My thoughts exactly ! and related to this opinion, probably is a comment for another thread, but i honestly believe that (for good or worse) FM marks a before and after in the challenges, not only because of the inclusion of non-roommates / non roadmates, in it mostly for fame, money and exotic experience (instead of in it to prolong their RW / RR experience with friends), but also because as Challenges as FM, the Duel and the Island have come, the team concept has started to vanish away, leaving the bare bones aspect of "everyone out to win for themselves".. which has brought more serious drama and more excitement, but IMO a loss of the concept of innocent fun and comraderie.
I'm in agreement.
yeah good points and not to beat a dead horse but the promotions for the show before the premiere werent done very well and internet viewing has to be taken into account
Episode 10 (Finale) Ratings: Real World/Road Rules: The Ruins 1.835 million viewers 1.2/2 HH 1.1/3 A18-49 2.2/6 W18-34 Not good, but I think these are decent. Ended up gaining over 200,000. It beat The Hills' finale by over 100,000 viewers, and beat The City's finale by over 300,000 viewers. It also beat Jersey Shore's premiere by over 500,000.
Decent rating for the finale =D
Not bad. What was the ratings for Duel 2 Finale?
