The Challenge: Free Agents - Ratings
Honestly, in my opinion, besides CT and Diem, it was the only thing that made it bearable. C'mon, let's not pretend Exes didn't succeed in ratings because of the CT and Diem love story. All my friends were so invested in that. As much as the hardcore viewers love Rachel/Aneesa and as much as BMP wanted Paula/Dunbar to be a thing... everyone I know was always tweeting and talking about CT and Diem.
Their "love story" continued in Rivals 2, but the ratings did not. At least not like Exes.
Their "love story" continued in Rivals 2, but the ratings did not. At least not like Exes.
Because the theme of "Exes" drew people in. It was also the first time people had seen CT and Diem together since the Duel 2.
Because the theme of "Exes" drew people in. It was also the first time people had seen CT and Diem together since the Duel 2.
That was my point. 1.8/9 people didn't tune in every week just to see those two. Obviously they're fan favorites but I also think the return of several old schoolers, the Vegas crew, and the theme, drew people in. And people continued watching it to see everything unfold. I do think people were more interested in the couples than the actually competitions. Exes had a lot more going on within each individual team than any of the Rivals 1&2 teams. And that's what I think people want to see with those themes. Neither of the Rivals season delivered that, the teams all worked well together and their "rivalry" was nonexistent throughout the seasons. Except for CT and Adam I think. That's just my opinion on why Exes had better ratings.
It's sad that people care more about the pointless drama than about the competition and athleticism.
It's sad that people care more about the pointless drama than about the competition and athleticism.
Well when the competition is repetitive and predicable what do you expect? and why would people watch for Athleticism when they can just as easily watch any form of actual sports for that? Drama is pretty much all this show has now basically.

I think it's the difference in the casting to be honest. The cast nowadays is more in it for the free booze and vacay, with a shot at the money, where the old school casts were also in it for bragging rights because they were so competitive. I still stick it out and watch every year because I enjoy the competitions.

Although the competition has always been serious and people have always wanted to win for money or bragging rights or whatever, it was more of the "experience" of vacationing in a place with a bunch of other people and having a good time. Now, I think people are much more focused on just winning.
I didn't mean the old schoolers were more focused on winning the money, I meant they were more focused on the aspect of competing with friends, etc.
Oh, okay. Then I agree with you in that aspect.

Whereas with the old challenge cast they were more about the experience and having fun with friends.
Nothing wrong with competition. Life is a competition.
Nothing wrong with competition. Life is a competition.
Oh please. Nobody said there was anything wrong with competition. I'm just saying that it's been a broken record for quite some time now when it comes to that department. And this is a TV show. Real life has nothing to do with Television.
It's sad that people care more about the pointless drama than about the competition and athleticism.
The worst part of the show is when they take up too much time on the challenge, the best part are the fights, hookups, drama, and politics. The actual challenges just play into the drama. Also when looking at this season as a whole the actual competition has been terrible.
I agree. There's more of a sense of competition with the cast now. Recently watched Inferno II on youtube (all episodes available btw) and you could sense a true team and friend environment with that old cast. Now with all these individual and teams of 2 (rivals, exes) the game has totally changed.
Their "love story" continued in Rivals 2, but the ratings did not. At least not like Exes.
Because Rivals 2 was healing the huge wound that BOTS2 gave The Challenge after Exes.
I don't think Inferno 2 was all that friendly. The Bad Guys never got along, plus CT conspired to get rid of Dan so he could get a bigger cut of the money ("I like money, money's good...it makes me feel good about myself") and Tonya was picked on mercilessly by the "mean girls" the whole time. There was also Darrell lying to Landon on the last mission in order to secure himself the life shield. And throughout the whole challenge Darrell had a secret alliance with CT, Derrick, and Rachel on the other team to keep his name out of the inferno. They played as teams, but just like in today's era, everyone was only looking after themselves.

I never knew that. And you forgot to mention the whole Tonya/Beth/Robin Fiasco and Tonya throwing Beth's clothes in the pool.

Then the challenge is not doing as bad as you guys think for MTV standards right now. Technically is the 3rd most watch show after Catfish and Awkward. By the way script it TV shows are more expensive than Reality shows, If I am not wrong. So the future for the challenge is not as a dark as some of you guys though.
Did anyone catch the little "Faking It" ad at the bottom of the screen pop up right when Cara Maria started talking about her injured hand after her elimination? Ironic.

She's not faking it.........

However, I just rewatched Gauntlet 2 recently and it's so obvious how much the show has changed. They were obviously competing on Gauntlet 2, but there was still fair play and good sportsmanship. Nobody was throwing challenges in order to get rid of their teammates, and all they talked about was team unity. Maybe it's because they weren't really winning that much in big team challenges, so they still acted as human beings towards each other. Except for Beth, they all seemed to genuinly like each other, which proves that you don't need fake drama in order to make it entertaining. I miss those days.

You may be unaware that production talked to certain cast members about creating certain kinds of drama during the challenge. Beth's job was to be the outcast. It's been years since I've had to write this, but BMP was far better years ago at building a believable story line for its final show edit. Unfortunately the woman who did such a great job as the story editor for BMP retired was replaced by a series of near minimum wage morons.
