Ian has a "Golden" one--kind of like the standard veto--they were saying he can save himself or someone else but that Frank picks the replacement.
Marcellus got the first "Golden Power of Veto" and decided not to use it in Season 3. Prior to that the Veto could only be used on someone else--not yourself.
For this stupid decision I really hope Shane wins POV, takes Danielle off the block, Frank will probably nominate Joe because if he nominates Britney Ian will take her off the block, and the Quack Pack lives to fight another week.
I don't think what Frank did was dumb at all, he had two choices really, nominate Ian and Dan or nominate Dan and Danielle. If he nominates Ian and Dan it flushes the power that Ian won away but if Danielle wins POV she can save both Dan and herself. While if he nominates Dan and Danielle, the only way one of them is not going home is if either Shane and Britney win POV use it AND Ian chooses to use his power on the other person. And I don't see the point of Ian using his power to save Dan, or anyone saving Dan for that matter.

But if he nominated Dan & Ian he could have still ended up with 2 of Dani, Brit & Shane on the block--that's no longer an option if Brit/Shane win the POV.

But he wants to work with Brit and Shane and only have to put one of them up as a last resort. I don't understand why everyone is so willing to work together to save Dan, they have a chance to take out the second biggest target in the house without having to get their hands dirty.
In a perfect world Shane will win HOH, take Dan off the block, then Ian will use his power to take Danielle off the block, and then ultimately evict another floater but save the Quack Pack.

Not long along Brit & Ian were discussing it may be best to cut Dan this week but they want Britney to win the POV to leave their options open

It's always possible and I wouldn't be surprised. Production always loves getting involved when it comes to making big decisions like that. Frank should have honestly still been gone before the reset of the game. Not having an eviction that night was stupid.

I don't think they come out and say "don't use the veto"
They try to make you doubt yourself. Ian said they were asking him questions like "How does using the veto help you?" "Do you think it would be better for your game to work with Britney and Frank instead of the Quack Pack?" "How does keeping Dan, Frank & Shane in the game help your game?" "If Dan stays do you feel like you're the fifth person in you alliance?" "Do you think Dan is going to turn on you before Shane, Britney & Danielle?" etc
Basically Ian is saying they're pushing him not to use the veto. Britney did say that getting rid of Dan may be the best decision this week but she wants to win the veto to leave their options open. If the Veto comp ever ends we'll have a better idea what is going to happen
I think right now the best thing for Ian is to stick with the Quack Pack. The best thing for Frank would be to get rid of either Dan or Shane.
But really with all that's happened it's a toss up of who's going to go this week.

Poor Dan took "solitary confinement" today too--stuck alone in a room knowing that he's dead in the water.
Taking out Dan really helps everyone else though.
