Uh oh. Joba Goes Nine (Steps)! - April 6, 2009
So, I am in a fantasy baseball league (it forces me to be a good fan and accept that there are other teams besides those in the North East.) What sucks is the last NL game I watched was in the mid 90's (and my roommate forced me to watch it) so it is hard to choose the right balance of players being half the pool is from the NL - and no one really cares what happens over there. Anyway, I have a great team (as I filled my roster with Red Sox and Yankees) but was forced to pick up a few NL players to take care of the gaps. Sadly Cubs closer Kevin Gregg was one of them and he goes ahead and gives up the winning run last night, offering me negative points for having him in my lineup. I really need to trick the owner of Nut Sac Babies to hand over Papelbon for a fair price. I should have joined an AL only league as I have no idea who these losers are. I guess I could watch a couple games on WGN, but sheesh - I don't think I can withstand 3 hours of bunting and pitchers being wrung up on three pitches... *Sigh*
Hey guys did I mention.....GOOOOO BRRAAVVEEEEESSSS

Hey Bacchus... did you pick up Carlos Zambrano? He's my favorite. :)
Oh man...that car looked effed.

He is my age and to be a starting pitcher on a big team like the Angels is a great accomplishment. I am glad he got to pitch a great game before he died. So young and so sad. My thoughts are with his family and the families of the other victims in the car with him. There was another big hit and run accident at my school last week where 2 kids were crossing the street at night, a car ran a red light, killed the girl and hit the guy who landed on the car and stayed there as they continued to drive for 500 feet until they stopped, got out, removed him from the car hood and fled. Sick people. Luckily the driver was caught but they still have to catch the passenger her husband. Supposedly their 7 month old was in the car with them. I am glad they caught the driver here too. I would never be able to leave someone I know I hurt to suffer. Back to baseball...what is up with you Matsuzaka? 3 homers by the 4th! Ugh.
You go to USC? I heard all about that story.
Yeah, finishing up my degree in the Architecture program. It was so sad. That intersection is such a dangerous one, people are always driving too fast, tons of kids biking and walking all the time. There is not much more you can do though if you already have a stop light and cross walks and street lights. Glad to hear the guy is now in stable condition, hopefully he will recover well and quickly.

I'm just glad that in both cases, they caught the people responsible.
My God....that's just....horrible. Unspeakable. How could anyone treat another human being like that?! Thank God the victim is alright.
It really is. There is a hit and run where you may rear end someone and the damage isn't so bad so you flee thinking no one is seriously hurt, and then there is hitting two pedestrians, one who is obviously injured since they are stuck on the hood of your car right in your face and you get out to take them off, then flee knowing that they are badly hurt. I am not saying the first situation is right, I am just saying that it takes a certain type of person to do what these people did, all in front of your child in the back seat. I am so glad he is recovering and I am so glad that, as of now, at least the driver was caught.
Some people in this world are just....disturbed and f'ed up. Don't know what drives them to do things like that. And that story about Nick is really sad....such a tragic end to a ever growing life.
I saw on the news this evening that it was a drunk driving accident...that makes it even worse. I heard later on that one of my friends is friends with the only person to survive the crash and went to school with him at CSUF. He's still in critical condition. Keep him in your prayers!

They ran the story on Good Morning America this morning. My goodness he was so talented and so young. And is 20-year old girlfriend was killed as well. :( And yeah they did a segment about drunk drivers and hit and runs becoming more common, it's just aweful. I'll keep your friend in my prayers molds!
This excerpt was on a blog I read and I thought it did a beautiful job at describing what I think we all may be feeling:
"There is something about athletes dying young that crystallizes our pain. It isn’t that these tragedies are somehow sadder or more heartbreaking than the harsh news that confronts us every single day. They are not. There is so much sad news in the world — in every city, every day — that it overwhelms us. And I think that’s why a young athlete dying touches us in a deep place. It is because the contrast of an athlete dying young is so powerful, and the promise so unmistakable. I guess it’s because we cannot help but think what we missed and what we lost. Those are the feelings of loss, but maybe it’s easier to grasp those feelings when it’s an athlete who dies. They are young and strong and gifted. They are, in a sense, youth. And then they are gone. There’s too much to feel." - Joe Posnanski
It is going to be a tough game tonight. I hope the Angels play a great game and give my Red Sox a run for their money. I hope they play a game that Nick will be proud of and show him how much he will be missed. I can't imagine having to process the loss with only a day off and then go back and play the game you know he loved without him. Show everyone what a great game baseball really is, I am sure he would love that.
On a lighter note, the Tigs won 15-2 today! Yay!
Dang! It was a slaughter against Texas! Congrats.

Cubs lost tonight. :(. Is anyone suprised?
I quit baseball. Just not my cup of tea. I think I am going to take up watching bowling... Oh...and hockey. Go Bruins!
B, it's 162 games. All is not yet lost.

Oh come on, B. It could be worse. They'll get it together. ;)
B, it's 162 games. All is not yet lost.
I know, I know. But we Red Sox fans are fickle. Heck, I have already read cries to fire Francona and we are 5 games in, lol. I think today is going to be a good day. Beckett it on the mound.

Beckett it on the mound.
Wait I thought Penny was on the mound? Did they switch up the order? Either way I am trying to get tickets to the game today right now since this will probably be the only game I can see the Sox in this year! I'll let this loss slide though. There were a number of bloops and bounces that it made me think Nick was looking down giving them a hand. I think I would have felt worse with a win, thinking the Sox had just taken something great away from the Angels community no matter how much I generally dislike them.
