my guess is that laurel was emotionally checked out and got purged in a similar way to how she lost to camila. she could have done much better but her heart just wasn't in it. by the time it got to the end she just kind of gave up and was happy to go home.
It wasn't explained on the show, but Laurel was disqualified for breaking the rules. The part where Ninja climbed up after didn't affect the results. This is why TJ says "when the tapes were checked, you did not put all the branches where they belong. So, unfortunatelty for you this ends your time here."
I DEFINITELY agree about it making for great TV, which is why it is one of my favorite eliminations EVER!
