It wasn't explained on the show, but Laurel was disqualified for breaking the rules. The part where Ninja climbed up after didn't affect the results. This is why TJ says "when the tapes were checked, you did not put all the branches where they belong. So, unfortunatelty for you this ends your time here."
I DEFINITELY agree about it making for great TV, which is why it is one of my favorite eliminations EVER!
Oh yeah, I def get that Laurel didn't finish correctly, but neither did Ninja technically -- at least until after the horn was blown. The issue is the horn going off signified it was over when it shouldn't have, and is why it's so messy.
