The Challenge: Production Secrets

Hey guys I'm new here. I have always been a fan of MTV The Challenge since The Island . One thing I have always been interested in is all the production that we don't see.

A couple of questions:

  • How do they pick the houses and put them together for the show?
  • How do they put together an actual challenge?
  • What happens to the house, the sets for challenges, and the elimination arena after filiming is over!?
  • How long does it take to film the show? Whats their day-day-day schedule like?

Aw I love this idea! Too bad idk anything about production lolol

I could be wrong but I think houses are rented. I remember real world seasons some where rented from famous people like San diegos.

I believe filming is challenge, elimination, interviews day off, challenge, elimination, interviews. So they do 2 challenges and 2 eliminations a week

This is well-known but I think it's interesting how they have people from the production team who try out each challenge numerous times while setting it up to see how it's going to work and if they are challenging enough or not.

I want tht job.

During the Extreme Challenge back in 2001 they had a catapult challenge that launched the cast in the air into a stack of hay or something.  On a behind the scenes episode of the challenge, I remember Jon Murray mentioned having the staff try it and production members were injured. When the cast got to the challenge they ended up canceling the mission. Syrus and a few others wanted no part of it lol

Syrus wanted no part of it because the mission was cancelled before he could ever voice his opinion, lol

when do they do the cast photos? and the very beginning of the challenge?

Yep. They normally arrive at the location and have a couple days before they actually start the Challenge. The first couple of days are taking pictures, interviews, etc.

I've heard stories like,  5 years ago BMP had a meeting with at least 60+ RW/RR cast available and ready to do the challenge. Unlike now, where the cast pool is very limited because no one is available/wants to be part of it.

Oh people are willing to be on the shows but BMP just doesn't want them.

Can you imagine if we had a season all with people who would do it but are irrelevant like Emilee, trey, Jay, candice

As much as I can't stand half the people who are on some of the current seasons, I always bring myself to watch because I love the show. But if there ever was a season like that I would absolutely not watch.

Trey isn't irrelevant. Had drama and a great showing on both of his seasons.  He also has rivals and exes. Idk how people think he brings nothing over people like Leroy who are cast every season.

Jay wasn't really irrelevant either. He cheated on his girlfriend with like two other girls, was a solid competitor, and quit a final and people shit on him/hate him for it. Had a lot of conflict with cast members. If BMP were smart he SHOULD be asked back just for that purpose.

Emilee sucks as a competitor and will most likely go home in the first few weeks every time, but she had a hookup on one of her only episodes of FA and would have been a perfect candiate for bloodlines.

Candice so far hasn't showed much of anything.

People are only irrelevant because they A) aren't cast and don't get to show what they have  and   Dirol aren't cast every season like Bananas, Leroy, Nany, Camila who literally bring nothing but fans seem to think they are relevant somehow.

I mean they don't contribute much imagine the challenges they would take 5 hours to finish

I never understood why people didn't like seeing Trey on challenges. He's a good competitor, and in my opinion I think he could bring drama as well. I don't like his way of going about things and he is kind of a ******, but I think he's a good competitor and would actually like seeing him compete.

Would like seeing him in a physical contact elimination.

But if that having a meeting with 60 plus castmembers is true than wow...
Nowadays they would have a meeting with the just the regulars and screw everyone else.

Lurker revealed this awhile back (I think on the generic thread) but there was supposed to be a different elimination for Cara Maria/Laurel vs. Jasmine/Jonna on Rivals. It was an obstacle course that gave both teams an equal chance at winning but BMP changed the jungle to "Blast Off" so they could continue the Cara Maria vs. Jenn rivarly. Smh so unfair.

I don't think that's why they changed it. Im pretty sure they changed it because something about not having enough to time to set the elimination up or something like that.

It could have been both reasons honestly.

Or they changed it because they know that Laurel has hella cellulite - As Ty would say,

And that JJ would obviously win..

I remember hearing that if Jenn/Mandi were voted against JJ then the obstable course would be used

Could be but it seems suspicious because every elimination on Rivals was different except that one.

The cast used to have Saturday's off where there are absolutely no cameras. That's when the majority of the hook ups happen. We still probably don't know most of the hookups that went on -_-. Still curious about Tina & Kenny.

Apparently they don't have Saturday's off anymore.

- Production had a long meeting when the inner circle eliminated Veronica on Battle of the Sexes 1 when Jamie saved her. They were going to let her stay but Emily and James absolutely flipped out on production, cussing them out. Production decided it would be better "story wise" to eliminate Veronica.

- filming is typically around 5 weeks.

- Inferno 1 house is a house you can rent to stay in. Interior is slightly different now.

Are you serious? Wow. They should've kept her.

Where can i look up the inferno 1 house?

Yeah I remember someone who's known to be realiable (maybe PR or someone else) said that was false and that they were changing locations the next day so they wanted someone quick and easy to set up/break down. Either way I think Cara Maria/ Laurel would have most likely won in anything.

what are the living conditions like? ive heard that they are not good but it looks like it would be great to live in those big mansions!

what are the living conditions like? ive heard that they are not good but it looks like it would be great to live in those big mansions!

BAD. Post Gauntlet 3 it became bad due to the new producer who was in the marines or something.

Living conditions used to be awesome. The cast member could bring books, magazines, ipods, had community cell phones, internet...they had chef's that made them great food...all kinds of liquor.

I don't know about NOW but on like the Battle of the Seasons 2 era, they were only allowed wine and vodka.

On an off day Sarah (RR: Campus Crawl) said some of the cast went to a random mansion by the house to watch tv, specifically Sex and the City. They were allowed to leave the house and go to restaurants and meet locals. Robin and Mark went on a date at a restaurant during Battle of the Sexes 2. Production would never allow that now.

The men on Battle of the sexes 1 got weed brownies from a jamaican local and on an off day the entire male cast ate them LOL. Colin had a whole blog about that. After the gauntlet 3some, Abram was at his hotel after being eliminated. Veronica and Rachel left the house to meet him at the hotel and had another one THAT SAME DAY lol (according to Norman). Aneesa and Davis slept at some random guy's apartment after a night of clubbing on the Inferno 3!

The Ruins and Cutthroat I heard were the challenges with the absolute worst conditions. The cast got fined if they went on the lawn!!!! That's why you only see them on their balconies or in their rooms...the very few times you see them by the pool, they had to get permission from production.

I went to the Cutthroat reunion show and the cast b**ched about the conditions for a good 45 minutes. Production made them clean their rooms so that they could have a ball to play with. They complied because there was no other form of entertainment.  I enjoyed seeing Abram and Brad reminisce about the Inferno 2...

Damn those conditions are ****** up i imagine The Island as being the worst tho in terms of conditions...no wonder they can only come up with dumb drama nowadays because the cast has literally nothing to do lol
