Real World: St. Thomas - Virgin Islands
The Real World 27 seems to be a lock for Hassel Island, St. Thomas. St. Thomas is unincorporated territory and constituent district in the United States Virgin Islands, which are a group of islands in the Caribbean sea that are an insular area of the United States. The "A" denotes Hassel Island A few weeks ago we came upon a twitter post which posited that the next season of the MTV franchise, The Real World would be set in St. Thomas: Of course, there is a tweet about The Real World being in every city in the United States, every day (especially Pittsburgh - why do people think they'd ever go to Pittsburgh?) So a healthy bit of skepticism was needed. Last week, "BigKahuna" a recent contributor here and operator of the St. Thomas blog shared with us in the Real World 27 casting thread that The Real World was in fact coming to St. Thomas in the near future. Final conformation was offered by The Virgin Islands Daily News in today's paper, "Some landlords have gotten new tenants who have agreed to shortterm leases of five or six months. Vendors have been paid with checks that say “Real World 27” and have a matching address to the show’s production company, Bunim/ Murray Productions." and "MTV’S reality show ‘Realworld’ appears set for St. Thomas." If they are in fact a Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper, then I guess that is about as good as conformation gets. From the blurry image shot by Big Kahuna we were able to ascertain that the house is called, "Hassel Island Estate." Via the Private Islands Online Website:
Hassel Island Estate, US Virgin Islands The past awaits on Hassel Island -- an island unlike any other in the US Virgin Island chain. Voiced through its ruins and abundant, indigenous flora and fauna, Hassel Island speaks of an important Caribbean multicultural history from pre-Columbian times to now. The Estate The estate was purchased by its current owner in 2007. Extensive renovation to the property were completed in early 2010. The project was designed by award winning local architect, Kevin Qualls, who understands the nuances of multicultural Caribbean architecture. His many creations include elite homes combining old Caribbean designs and textures with new, contemporary dimensions. Brick arches, stone walls, West Indian Mahogany shutters, and more will be used to create this great Caribbean living experience. Set on 10 acres of land surrounded by National Park, the estate consists of three houses totaling about 15,000 square feet. A main house with three master suites opens to an unobstructed view of Charlotte Amalie harbor. The large living room leads to an open terrace just 100 feet from the harbor, and the main swimming pool, featuring a natural cascade from the existing ancient rock outcroppings. In addition two 1200 square foot West Indian-inspired Guest Cottages are located North and South from the main home, to capture a great view of the harbor. An ample Harbor facing front lawn is suitable for up to 225 guests. A new dock and helipad site were also added. History Hassel Island, a lush and unique place originally connected to St. Thomas, now forms an island, just a quarter mile from the town of Charlotte Amalie. It is an island whose own cultural history is still deeply connected to the islands that surround it. In exploring Hassel Island, historic ruins stand as testaments of Britain's occupation of the area during the Napoleonic Wars. A little further are the remains of the Creque Marine Railway, one of the earliest steam powered marine railways the world has ever known. Listen carefully to hear the distant echoes of the Dutch, British, French and American steamship companies that once operated from the island. And from the island, it has been said that the ships of smugglers, pirates and buccaneers sailed into Charlotte Amalie harbor, close to the island, before St. Thomas became a free port. Much has been seen and done here on Hassel Island and the ruins still whisper their compelling tales. National Park Hassel Island also boasts a lush and protected natural landscape, as 90% of the island lies within the Virgin Islands National Park. Within the park boundaries, you will find protected bays of limpid blue-green waters, and sandy beaches teeming with sea grape trees, coconut palms, and other tropical flora. The Virgin Islands National Park provides habitat for over 800 species of plants and animals. Add to this relics from the Pre-Colombian Amerindian civilization and the remains of Danish colonial structures, and you begin to experience the rich cultural and natural history of the Virgin Islands National Park and the island it inhabits.
The house is owned by St. Thomas businessman Ricardo Charaf, who purchased the estate and the 10 surrounding acres on Hassel Island from the Paiewonsky family (the previous owners of much of the island dating back to the 1930's) in 2007 for $7.5 million. It is again up for sale, with a current asking price of approximately $10.0 million. Charlotte Amalie is no longer the swinging town it used to be. Many of the streets are dangerous after dark, so visitors have stopped visiting the area for nightlife, with the exception of a few places, such as the Greenhouse. Much of the action has shifted to Frenchtown, which has some great restaurants and bars. However, just as in Charlotte Amalie, some of these little hot spots are along dark, badly lit roads. The primary problem here is mugging, although some of the criminal activity appears to be drug-related. Sexual assault is known to occur, but happens rather infrequently. Sexual harassment can be a problem in certain bars in Charlotte Amalie. Any of the major resort hotels are generally safer, and any place we've recommended can be viewed as hospitable (though, of course, creeps can be found in any bar).
Wow, that sounds inviting! Maybe some of the locals can give us a more even handed perspective... So I guess the question remains, what type of season will this bring? With a lackluster return to San Diego in 2011, this staple of reality television definitively needs a boost to assure its very survival.
Interested in seeing the direction of this season. The house is similiar to Hawaii.
That's really interesting... I have a friend from St. Thomas and he makes it sound like quite the happening place. I wonder how much being somewhat isolated on that island will impact the cast. It's only a quarter mile but still rather inconvenient when you want to go out to do pretty much anything.
Interesting, a new setting hopefully they get a good cast, cuz San Diego absolutely sucked. The house looks amazing too.

Nowhere to go and plenty of booze, while being locked up on their very own tropical Alcatraz. You'd think that alone would breed good dramatic television - although we have seen with past seasons that even good locations can't repair less than stellar casting.
In 27 seasons, was there ever a location that wasn't discovered prior to filming? If not, what's the point of the secrecy?

Locations outside of the continental US are always a bit more difficult.
I really like this idea! It's something different, plus it's one of my favorite vacation spots! :)
Actually we have several Subways in STT. We also have McDonald's, Wendy's, KMART, Home Depot on and on.
Yes I know there is actually civilization in the Virgin Islands. I just do not see the destination as being an easy sell to the 13-34 demographic and therefore not as attractive of a season to affiliate advertisers with. Based on some of the comments on your blog, I am starting to wonder if RW is trying to get a ratings boost by the inevitable death of a cast member :).

Well finally, some place new and different!
Actually the time they will be here will be very exciting. Our Carnival starts at the end of April so they will be part of the 2nd largest Carnival in the Caribbean (St. Thomas Carnival 2008). We have over a week worth of "Carnival Village" and then we have J'ouvert and the Adult Parade which bring 10,000 people and more in. It's absolutely insane, fun and they'll get completely hammered the entire time. As far as "death" goes they'll be fine. Our crime is all drug related. The thugs just keep killing each other, no different than any other major city. And they have a ton of security. Just our Carnival alone will make the show exciting.
I like. One day I think it would be crazy if they did a Real World Tokyo.
They are going to be here for our Carnival at the end of April. 10 days of drunken stooper in the 2nd largest Carnival in the Caribbean. Trust me, it's a lot of fun in STT during Carnival. Wait until they have to wake up at 3:30am and head downtown for J'ouvert. You're gonna see 10,000 people dancing down the streets. Lots of fun :)
Wow, that sounds inviting! Maybe some of the locals can give us a more even handed perspective...
There is no sexual harassment, that's false. But downtown does indeed roll up at 7pm. We have several areas of nightlife: Red Hook (Duffy's Love Shack, Caribbean Saloon, XO Bistro, Molly Malone's, Fatty's, Big Bambooz, Fish Tails, Coco Blue and a few others) and in Havensight we have Starz Nightclub, Shipwreck Tavern, Dog House Pub, and Senor Frogs) Other fun places are Jack's Bight (Thursday nights), Fat Turtle (Friday nights) and Frenchtown has great restaurants and bars. I'm sure they'll take trips to world famous Soggy Dollar bar in Jost Van **** BVI's and the Willy T.

I smell another Cancun season. Okay location but it doesn't really matter where it is, people will always tune in for the cast members and how crazy or what drama they are going through.
I think the location sounds interesting, it will be nice to not see another back to season.
I smell another Cancun season. And B, whats wrong with Pittsburgh? LOL.
And B, whats wrong with Pittsburgh? LOL.
Hey. I'm not hating Pittsburgh, I'd just prefer TRW to be in places I'd like to visit, versus places I transit through or do business in. Pittsburgh has gone under an amazing revitalization. That counts for a lot, but is still not a February destination. As for the USVI, it is an amazing scattering of places. I've only personally been within that realm for a day (such is the way of the cruise ship world.) I'm looking forward to seeing the islands as more than just cruise ship ports.
I love Pitt! I almost moved there instead of Florida (huge mistake on my part, she of stayed up north). The location is interesting and its actually something different instead of another California or New York location. I was really hoping for another Chicago season..the first one was my second favorite RW season.

I think this season will be interesting, but only if they find the right group of people, which they really haven't the past couple of seasons.

I think they were one of the best we've had in a while. Both on RW and Challenges.

I would have been more interested to see them building houses in Haiti or something like that if they wanted to be on an Island.
I wonder what this means for the cast. I know the Virgin Islands is 80% african-american. Maybe this means that there will be 3 or 4 black people on the show, maybe one cast member may be from the Virgin Islands originally?
I doubt they'll have a West Indian on the show. I would imagine they want them to be schooled in the ways. Like being required to say Good Morning, Good Afternoon and Good Night when we meet anyone or walk in a room. When I first got here and was waiting at the telephone company office I found it bizarre that anytime anyone came in the room the entire office would say "Good morning" all at once. Bizarre but nice. And West Indians don't really speak English like the states. If you want to "unplug a lamp" they say "plug it out", if you're leaving but will be back soon they say "goin' to come back", I could go on and on. Watch there faces as they try and understand what they're saying, should be funny.

How do we know they are all AA though? I think African descent would be better term. Or Afro-Caribbean? I don't know. I don't know a whole lot about the demography of American Virgin Island. But I'm with you. I'm curious to see the people type of cast they bring in.

Most of the residents were born in the islands, although many migrated to the U.S. Virgin Islands from other islands in the West Indies, the United States and other countries."

I guess time will tell. Unless they end up with a real group job where they actually have to go to work like normal people, I am not holding out much hope that this won't be "Real World: San Diego 2(b)".
Being that it really didn't work out well with Priscilla, it'd be better if none of the roommates be from Virgin Islands.
