This trade was fair to all sides. The only problem is that Orlando will probably be dumb and give away Howard for almost nothing when New Jersey has a better offer on the table.

I'm ok with trading Gasol, but him and Odom for a point guard? I really hope they have a back up plan, that consists of Howard.

Chris Paul is the best PG in the NBA. The team was getting old and probably couldn't win another title with their core. They had to revamp it. I am not sure if they have enough pieces to trade for Dwight Howard. You never know though because Otis Smith did trade Rashard Lewis for a worse player with a worse contract, Gilbert Arenas.

OH ****!!!!! THIS IS GOOD NEWS FOR ME BABY!!!! I hated Heat for doing what they did last year but I don't care if the Lakers can top that. Paul, Bryant, and Gasol > Wade, James, and Bosh anyday. START THE SEASON ALREADY!
Edit: omg I just read the article. They lose Gasol and Odom?!?! wtf man.... But Chris Paul will definitely be a good addition to LA. Let's go I'm still excited!
I'm very happy with the move even though I'm a big Odom fan. The Lakers have to get back Okafor or someone else to balance the salaries which should make up for their newly created lack of an inside game if they decide to keep him. I'm eager to see what they put together for Howard. He's made it pretty clear that he wants to be a Laker but to just give the Magic Bynum and pocket change probably won't fly.
Oh yeah and I just thought of something, if Howard does indeed get to play with Bryant and Paul, their 3 will be on par with the heat 3, maybe even better, which gives LeBron an even harder shot at winning a championship. lol that makes me laugh a little inside.
I personally think the Hornets were getting the best end of that deal. They got a very good scorer who is young in Martin, a solid big man in Scola, and a versatile Forward in Odom. Can't believe the league intervened.
Weird, who owns the Hornets again? Oh wait...
The only reason why the trade was vetoed is because they don't want the Lakers to get Dwight Howard also. If D12 was already traded to a team like the Nets then they would have allowed the trade.
Well you can stop laughing, Stern killed the deal. Owners thought it didn't make sense that NBA-owned hornets could unload team. Sorry lakersfan lol
Great news. I want the Lakers to grow old and die. ;)
Sources said that a group of NBA owners, assembled in New York for the ratification of the league's new labor pact with the players, protested vigorously that the league-owned Hornets were trading Paul to the star-studded Lakers and convinced NBA commissioner David Stern to intervene.
Funny that they call the Lakers star studded but in this trade they would give away 2 of their 3 all-stars.

Well, the NBA does own the Hornets. Trading CP3 wouldn't do much except give the Lakers much more of a chance to win another title. Doesn't exactly make the rest of the conference extremely competitive.
The NBA does want what's best for the NBA, which is competition...at least, I would hope.
I'm not sure how competitive it makes the Lakers honestly, and I'm fan. They lose two seven footers and are betting on a) Bynum not getting hurt (which is like betting the sky won't be blue tomorrow) or b) the Magic being convinced to trade Dwight for injury prone Bynum and spare parts). Does it give the Lakers the best backcourt in the NBA? Obviously...but it also kills the one clear advantage that they have on almost every team which is their size.
Also: I think that this was a good move for the Hornets...getting rid of CP3 is clearly a HUGE step back but the fact that they would've turned it into Odom, Luis Scola, Kevin Martin, Dragic and a pick? It gives them pieces to work with. Definitely more than just Rondo or just Steph Curry would've done for them.
After a long five years in the league...

Apparently Dwight Howard to the Nets could happen by the end of the day today. So much for a big 3 in LA.
I frankly don't see how the Lakers would of put together a good enough package for Dwight Howard anyways. Otis Smith (Magic GM) adamantly said no about Bynum-Howard straight up deal. I have no idea what other valuable assets the Lakers have except the ability to absorb Hedo Turkoglu's massive contract.

It may not have mattered what the Lakers offered. Dwight could've come out and said he would only sign an extension with the Lakers...so Orlando has to chose between taking something or nothing. Are there some teams, like the Nets, who would roll the dice and make a deal and HOPE he changes his mind, but there wouldn't be that many? Yes (this is just a hypothetical obviously as Dwight is clearly willing to sign with the Nets).
Dan Gilbert is such a slimy *******. He was cool with a super team when he had Lebron and was trying to convince Amar'e or Bosh to come there and all that but now that he has nothing he cries about every move the other teams make. He doesn't care about it from a basketball perspective because the Hornets were actually BETTER OFF by making this deal so he needs to just shut up.
The league got very lucky that they got the new CBA ratified before all of this stuff started because I'd bet my arm that every single player in the league would vote to have it rejected if they were given a redo today.
Commissioner,
It would be a travesty to allow the Lakers to acquire Chris Paul in the apparent trade being discussed.
This trade should go to a vote of the 29 owners of the Hornets.
Over the next three seasons this deal would save the Lakers approximately $20 million in salaries and approximately $21 million in luxury taxes. That $21 million goes to non-taxpaying teams and to fund revenue sharing.
I cannot remember ever seeing a trade where a team got by far the best player in the trade and saved over $40 million in the process. And it doesn't appear that they would give up any draft picks, which might allow to later make a trade for Dwight Howard. (They would also get a large trade exception that would help them improve their team and/or eventually trade for Howard.) When the Lakers got Pau Gasol (at the time considered an extremely lopsided trade) they took on tens of millions in additional salary and luxury tax and they gave up a number of prospects (one in Marc Gasol who may become a max-salary player).
I just don't see how we can allow this trade to happen.
I know the vast majority of owners feel the same way that I do.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?
Please advise...

At least this time it wasn't written in Comics Sans...a step up in his professionalism.
I was actually on the side of the owners during the lockout...now I kind of wish the players had bled them for more.

It is still unclear at this time as to whether it was written in Comic Sans.
Maybe Gilbert should focus on his horrendous team rather than how improved the Lakers would possibly be.
Great news. I want the Lakers to grow old and die. ;)
Me too, haha although I have to say this was looking good for the Hornets. What now, Paul will walk at the end of the season for nothing?

Hey, he has my back and that of the greater Boston Metro. :D
Hey, he has my back and that of the greater Boston Metro. :D
He probably would've done it to you guys too. I think if any big market team had made it happen the smaller guys would've freaked out. What made me laugh is how he said it was unprecedented that a team got the best player in a deal AND cut cap because
A) The Lakers were going to have to take back AT LEAST 8 mil more in salaries so that's not true
And B) even if it were true it's called having a smart front office...I'm sorry you had six years to figure out how to make Lebron happy and couldn't do it...don't penalize everyone else because you make awful decisions.
At this point it's whatever. I'm looking on the brightside of maybe being able to see Dwight play in Jersey for a year.

Dan Gilbert needs to grow the hell up. He acts like a spoiled 5 year old . I love the Cavs but he makes them even more embarassing than they already are. I can't believe the owners rejected this trade just because the league "owns" the Hornets. When the Rangers traded for Cliff Lee they were owned by Bud Selig and MLB so maybe the other owners should have thrown a fit about that just like these NBA babies are doing. I hate the Lakers but they should have been able to make the trade.
Right now, I'm just happy that Tyson Chandler is on the Knicks!!! and that they didn't try to go after Chris Paul.
I thought that the trade between the rockets, lakers and hornets benefited the Hornets as much as possible. They would've received Odom, Kevin Martin and Luis Scola for one player, Chris Paul, who would've left the team anyways.
Why'd the owners complain about the trade?

The seem to think that the Lakers were gonna build a superduper team and the Hornets were getting nothing back even though they were gonna get the players you said plus 2 first round draft picks one of which, I believe, is unprotected. They also seem to believe that a winning franchise is less important than marketability. They think that taking CP out of New Orleans reduces the revenue the team will make and be less likely to attract an owner. The second point makes a little more sense than their first issue but it still suck.
I still really think that the trade hurts the Lakers more than it helps. If I'm the other teams I would've wanted this trade to happen.
I can't wait for this season! I'm for my homtown OKC Thunder. But really I'm just for whoever is playing the Lakers or Heat. Can't wait though, going to a new years eve game against the Suns. My best guess is it will be the Lakers Vs. Heat just early prediction.
