I would say Matt Kemp has been the best player all year. He has put up better numbers with a worse team in a more difficult park.
Better numbers?
Not so much: WAR
Jacoby is this year's WAR king, by a good margin. Baseball is more than just swinging a bat.
WAR is still an extremely flawed stat because there isn't one set definition for it.
Fangraphs has Ellsbury at #1 while baseball reference has Ellsbury at #6 (#4 among non-pitchers)
Fangraphs has Kemp tied for #3 while baseball reference has Kemp at #1.

My guess is that baseball reference is showing only offensive WAR and not combined WAR.
No it is showing combined WAR. Like I said WAR is extremely flawed because there isn't a set definition. On baseball reference Matt Kemp has an oWar higher than anyone's combined WAR and he doesn't have a negative dWar like he does on Fan Graphs.

BR uses a slightly different equations it's not really a big deal.
How come when Felix Hernandez won Cy Young, they pretty much ignored wins because he had very little. But now with MVP, they're looking heavily at Verlander and his wins? Verlander has 5 more wins than CC, but he also is only .01 above Weaver in ERA and has 20 more strikeouts than CC (with about 14 extra innings than CC).
I'm still rooting for Granderson, but if Verlander gets it I won't be happy. I'm a die-hard Yankee fan but I'd much rather see Gonzales get it than Verlander. Not because he's a pitcher, but because I don't think he's done enough to be MVP.

I agree that pitchers should not be in the running for MVP. They are part time players. Verlander has only played in 17% of the Tigers total innings. How can you be MVP if you are only on the field 17% of the time!
As for the cy, wins don't count unless they count...
Last season there were no standouts with lots of wins, so the voters defaulted to WAR. This year is different as Verlander has good looking stats AND an impressive W/L record. He's a shoe in.
Well I wouldn't say pitchers shouldn't be allowed, I just don't think that Verlander's done enough this year to constitute being MVP. If he had like 30 wins and an ERA under 2 then that's a different story, but his stats are comparable to a few guys who aren't necessarily viewed as doing as well as Verlander so I don't think he should get it.

So basically you are saying pitchers should not be in the MVP race? :wink2:
The last pitcher to win 30 games was Denny McLain in 1968 and before that it was Dizzy Dean in 1934. It will probably never happen again as it is a different game now. After "the year of the pitcher" in 1968, they lowered the mound...
Critics of the wild card can say what they want, there is no denying how exciting this last week of baseball is turning out to be with these 2 wild card races!
Wow! I thought the Rays were done for sure. Dan Johnson comes through in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs to tie it up!
Why are you posting? I hate you.
p.s. It looks like the Yankees would rather play the Rays in the ALCS should it come to it (or they are just sticking a knife.)
Why can't the Yankees suck this much when we play them? I think they are just afraid of us and want an easy ride through the post season.
Rain delays are THE WORST.
Why can't the Yankees suck this much when we play them?
My belief is they made the decision that they Sox would win and thus they should lose to bring an extra game to run down their rivals for the fun of it - because they are the Evil Empire.
Yes, I'm big into baseball conspiracy theories.
The sad part is...
(I won't go there, yet.)

Lol. Been a rough night for you B?

I now think the best case scenario is going to be a game in Tampa. The worst is September golf fundraisers, starting tomorrow.
For real, Aceves? Get it together.
He did. Bard is who scares me...almost as much as Jonathan "give me a heart attack" Papelbon.
I want Buchholz in the 8th. All or nothing.

Oh! Whoa. I didn't realize I wasn't watching realtime right now. I forgot I had rewound to watch a play again and didn't fast forward after. Whoopsie.
That play at home wasn't even close. We have seen this all season long. An overestimation of the runner and an underestimation of the arm.
Ok, on to the bottom of the 8th. Where nightmares live.
1 out scutaro why are you pushing it!?
(I went back to make sure.)
He was waived home. Not his call. Just following orders...
Bad coaching. Not bad running.

Yeah you are right.
