As an aside, I've dealt with doctors and traumatic injuries before and I've found that they're NEVER openly optimistic unless things are really positive - they don't want to have to turn around and tell you they were wrong and things are going to be worse, they'd rather hedge and then tell you things are better than they expected. I suspect that his brain damage is minimal and in unimportant areas if they term themselves "optimistic", because that's a pretty strong thing to say for a doctor. The length of a medically induced coma isn't really that big of a deal because its not a sign of brain damage, its a sign of swelling. If they're keeping him under but term things as "optimistic", it indicates to me that his brain is currently safe (i.e. not sustaining ongoing damage due to existing swelling, which can be a major problem). Waking him will increase fluid levels in the head so they need the swelling to go down before they can do that.
Poor TJ! I've always liked him but he's been showing so much more personality on the show this season. It's sad that he was going to retire and now he has this to deal with. Get better soon TJ :(
An orbital fracture and associated swelling could also put pressure on the optic nerve which can be very very painful. I am sure he will be okay though.
I absolutely adore TJ, hoping that he'll have a speedy recovery. The Challenges wouldn't be the same without him there, and it seems like he really likes doing them from interviews, so I'm sure as soon as he's able he'll be back.
Wow, this is incredibly sad. Hope he pulls through.
I actually saw this off of Ruthie's FB before seeing it here, it's nice to see the challengers showing their support. I really hope he can make a full recovery.
Good to hear doctors are optimistic, and like said above, it's realyl ncie to see castmembers keeping him in their prayers.
Dave Farra just tweeted that TJ is gonna be ok. Edit, he just tweeted again that he isn't out of the woods but doctors are optimistic.

This is Daves most recent update on TJ: DaveFarra Great news! Just got word that @tjlavin is improving. His eyes are still closed, but he's following simple commands + gave a thumbs up! #bmx
Thanks God... I hope he is gettin better and better
This is sad to hear. I hope he gets better.
Glad to hear he's getting better and even gave a thumbs up. I saw that this made Yahoo's main newsfeed so I'm glad that people are actually hearing about it other than challenge/BMX fans.
It even made the imdb.com top news, and that really shocked me.
Update from Dave Farra, TJ hasn't opened his eyes but is obeying simple commands and gave a thumbs up.

NICE!
@Lindsay, that's terrific news. Glad the MRI came back negative for injury. Can't wait for the update.
A text message that Tim "Fuzzy" Hall got and posted to his twitter page:
Very good news. And I definitely want TJ back as hot, despite what many others think, I think he does a good job, but this may interfere with him hosting the next one. Obviously he'll still be a little banged up but he also may not feel well enough to fly across the world and be away from his family/friends after such an awful event.
Teej needs to host, what may be, the last challenge!
I think even when TJ will be 100% BMP would have someone we all are familiar with to host the show like Mark Long, or even Blair H. even though he works for G4tv. All I am hoping for is for him to be 100% again!
I agree, what matters is that he makes a full recovery and not to worry about hosting right now. If he does infact have to step aside for the next challenge, I'm sure Mark would be the host. After that, I'm not sure. Maybe they'd have TJ come back, because he's said he loves hosting them, or maybe they'd just keep Mark.

I'm just glad to here there isn't any brain damage.
If Molds is right we're gonna have some time for TJ to recover, because the next challenge won't be on TV until June or so.
Never made it in here but I've read about it. My thoughts and prayers are with TJ.

Nice to see that it looks like TJ will be okay. He's been solid in the first couple episodes in Cutthroat antagonizing the cast about how if they lose, they'll have to tell all their friends that they went home early. I listened to the podcast that he did with Bill Simmons on ESPN and he was very funny. Hope he makes a full recovery and we can see him on the next Challenge. His hosting skills have improved lately, I enjoy how he gives an opinion on stuff now and calls people out. Get well soon TJ, you've grown on me.
