It's all about getting people that the audience can relate to, rather than getting your typical white good looking person.
Casting an asian-american female/male would definitely get asian-americans to watch The Real World, and there's a lot more asian's than people think in America.
I'm absolutely amazed at the fact that they are yet to do so....
With so many seasons and the fact that Asian Americans are a strong part of the culture no matter where you live in the United States, you have to wonder if there are other factors at work.
As for hiring actors or making this a Bad Girls clone - please cancel the show before you destroy it completely. Please.
I'd tune out immediately if it was just another trash reality show ala Jersey Shore.
It might be good for ratings, but the legacy would be tossed into the sewer.
That aside, I do agree there can be controversial elements inserted into he show that would agree with the initial offerings and make it more interesting.
They need to lose the stereotypical casting and give us a gritter view of "reality."

I honestly don't think its the solely the people they cast that make the show good or not. It's the damn story writers and editors who think that the content they choose to show in the final cut is interesting and people could relate to it.
This season, in my opinion, had awesome potential to be one of the best seasons in recent years. However, they chose to go with the storyline of a showmance between Ty and Emily. Yes, it is a storyline worth following through. But to drag it out for 3 episodes? With the hour-long format, you only have 12 episodes, and they base 1/4 of the season about the same two roommates arguing about hooking up with each other and other people. Also, the arguments they shown weren't even intense and had no substance.
Think about it.
1st episode-great way to start off the season. The argument about religion at dinner really enticed viewers and people thought this might actually be a season worth watching.
viewers=1.9 (pretty good compared to cancun.)
2nd episode-not so great. Nothing besides 4th of July fireworks had to do with D.C. they chose to focus on the roommates making out with each other, and andrew trying to get into callie's pants.-Typical Real World episode, nothing new, lives up to what people mean that "they show the same thing every single season."
viewers=2.0 (due to an awesome 1st episode, people decide to tune in for another week because they feel that this season has a different edge to it. )
3rd episode-they follow up with Ty and Emily's relationship-in my opinion, this storyline has already gotten way too much air-time as it is. Even Callie's issue with weight and body image, an important issue in today's society that should get recognition, gets overshadowed and only gets a total of maybe 10 minutes of air-time. if I remember correctly, when they were casting for D.C., they were looking for someone who has been dealing with weight issues. They specifically looked for that storyline during casting, yet they only give focus to the subject for 10 minutes of one episode? really now.
viewers=1.84 (you can see a loss in viewership because of lame episode that aired the previous week. however, there is still a good amount of people tuning in, not quite ready to give up hope on the season, waiting for a change)
4th episode-they choose to focus on mike and Ashley's fight, something that clearly is caused by simply being annoyed with each other, which is bound to happen when living under those circumstances. It's not because of sexual tension between them, yet they try to make it seem so. And more of andrew trying to********. whats new?
viewers=1.79 (another drop in viewers. People are slowly tuning out as this season of "The Real World" is not what they expected. We are 4 weeks into the season and it is so far been a huge disappointment.)
5th episode-focus is on Josh and his relationship. Some people are enticed to this storyline since, so far, Josh has had little air-time. However, another typical real world episode focusing on a relationship back home and trouble dealing with adapting to a new house, a new city, and new temptations to cheat. They also focus on Erika's singing. No offense to Erika, but I just watched American Idol a couple hours ago. I've had enough bad singing for one night. I'm sure you're a good singer and have talent, but tonight was just not on point.
viewers=1.62 (drop again. can bmp be surprised at this point? this season sucks!)
6th episode-pizza fight. deals with mike starting to be more open about his sexuality and starting to be comfortable with himself. Callie is also shown doing what she came out to D.C. for, photography. not the best episode, but GREAT IMPROVEMENT from the last ones. The season is starting to gain back some substance. Also, i wanna point out one more thing. They chose not give the roomies a job this season. They wanted to let the cast venture out into the city and pursue their goals just as the cast of Brooklyn. besides mike's interview with HRC in the 2nd episode that had a total of around 5-10 minutes of airtime, Callie (and Erika, sorta) is the only person shown actually doing something with their opportunity in D.C. this is episode 6!!!! We are half way through the season! Ashley has voiced that she has aspirations and goals she wants to pursue in D.C. so far we've seen nothing. We know that the cast were actively involved in doing things from the spoilers, but they have yet to show any of it.
viewers=1.59 (drop. no way of recovering from it at this point.)
7th episode-fight between ashley and erika. typical real world storyline once again, but the drama is still amusing and was definitely edited well to enhance the storyline. also more on Mike with him dealing with his sexuality. They also show the cast in laser tag. Its always good to watch the whole cast interacting and having fun together. GREAT episode, imo!!! Finally, The Real World, D.C. i've been waiting for.
viewers=1.31 (everyone has lost hope in this season because of the past previous episodes. the only people watching now are the loyal fan base that have been watching The Real World religiously for awhile.)
Point im trying to make is they focus way too much on the stupid *** that nobody cares about. If they just stuck with focusing on the cast pursuing their goals and aspirations, we would kept on seeing an increase in viewers(or at least have a steady fan base) like we did in the beginning and this season could have been one of the best in recent seasons. get some new people with new ideas to take over! Get a new producer, fire the story editors, whatever it takes! get some story writers and producers who know whats relevant to the demographic they are targeting. I think its time for a change within BMP if they want their show to have a comeback.
I don't uderstand the point of putting the cast in DC if they aren't going to do anything related to politics or the history of this country. There is so much potential and it's wasted. They can go into a bar anywhere. Who cares? The next season should be "The Real World: Who Gives A **** ".
This, combined with a bad cast, is why the ratings suck.

Isn't that why BMP said they did it in DC? What liars!
I agree with the point about casting an asian again. Minorities in general should be more represented - I believe that would be a built-in ratings and drama boost.
This is the most boring season ever.
Worst than Paris, Cancun, Syndey & Denver.
The cast has no substance & they're all VERY boring castmembers.
I really don't like how this season is only concentrated in one part of DC. The DC area has very rich culture, but they aren't focusing on it. I feel like they're trying to keep pace with this "peachy political safe" image. Um, last time I checked DC had a very high concentration of African Americans, but you never see them in the background or the clubs the cast visits. Hmm, that isn't too realistic. There are other places in DC aside from the Dupont Circle area that are worth visiting and a lot more interesting.

how can you call denver and sydney boring?

I wouldn't call this cast boring. I definitely think that the characters that the producers and editors made to portray the cast is boring. We're not seeing the full personality of each castmember. We are only seeing one personality trait that the producers want to focus on.

I agree with casting an asian. It would be something different. However, a season's ratings and drama is not solely based on the diversity of ethnicity of all the castmembers. Its based on the story the producers and story writers create and the characters the castmembers are molded into.
I think the real world should definately cast more people who have imigrated to the United States on their own accord. This is a major political issue and having someone who has green card especially if they are from a latin country would be so great.

Agreed, that would be a great story...
but i personally think the reason this season isn't working as well as it should is...
Hour long eps are only pleasing to die hard fans... (which most have moved on by now)
Not enough memorable interesting drama
Bad casting ( BUT not entirely keep Ashley, Ty, Mike, Andrew, Callie, Erika, and Emily)
- Josh who? (go back to 7 strangers as well)
I think the real world should go back to its old formula as well as always giving the cast a job...I mean sure that's not what the real world is but I think alot of the whole social experiment thing is done through living and "working together". Plus some of the best moments in classic and newer real world history have come because of the whole job thing. Like for example Brooke flipping out over the outward bound job thingy....
Like for example Brooke flipping out over the outward bound job thingy....
Ah, and lets not forget Melissa throwing her chair in anger after David tells her to "hype the **** down" during a group discussion of their project in the New Orleans season! :D

i was going to say that.
or in key west, when Johnny went to sleep under the table and Paula flipped out on him in the car.

When I lived in the DC area for a couple years I encountered far more Asians than African-Americans, though I know African-Americans are the larger demographic. Perhaps they just focus on Dupont because that is where the cast was most of the time. DC is not that inviting to explore in other than around the Mall. I recall the 9:30 Club telling me "if you cannot drive here don't come--don't risk your life with the couple block walk from the Metro." That is not to say that would be true in most of DC's African-American neighborhoods, but DC is a place like South Philly where a few blocks can make a big difference one way or the other. I do think they have had some good B-roll shots from around DC.
I think what RW needs is to cast some hard partiers who will sleep with anybody if they want to improve the ratings. Worked for the Jersey Shore. There is so much psycho-drama in people's lives already the last thing they want to do is watch more of it. The shows need to be an escape for the viewers or a way to live vicariously. That is why I loved it when Andrew talked about not being someone who puts all that crap out there for the world, not that he is a hard partier or is having much luck with the ladies thus far.

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that was prob. the funniest bit of drama in the past 10 years of the real world... and actually it was the closet not under the table...
& what about Frankie being afraid of boats...that was casting gold for that season

Did you not see the two moderator warnings about staying on topic?
The ratings are flat for this season, and the 10 PM cable competition is not helping. I can't even find ratings for the Aftershows. Interest in the season is also down across the internet with far fewer threads for episodes and cast than in previous seasons. There actually may have been more buzz for the show while it was taping than there is now. You know the show is struggling when past cast members are talking more about Jersey Shore and other shows than they are about the DC season.

i was thinking the same. the other day i was wondering if the old cast memebers actually watch this season.
if the majority of them did, it would at least help a little with ratings.

I highly doubt 150 or so RW's would change the ratings.

Very true... It'll be interesting to see how all of this would change if they factor in online viewing of episodes into the ratings as well. Though, with this season so far, probably not enough to save it.

I took an informal and unscientific poll this weekend. Not a single RW/RR person I talked to has watched the DC season. Only two of the 10 watched more than 10 minutes of Cancun.
