Ok. Racial jokes are offensive because they reduce people to a stereotype and, wrong or right, it's hurtful and dehumanising especially to minorities who less often have the privilege of being judged individually and must take on the burden of representing The Community. Further, in a country shaped by racial inequity, it's not something about which a "well meaning" joke can be told.
And anybody over the age of 12 should know this already.
And along those lines, didn't Andrew also mention that he was fired from a job because of his jokes about women and lesbians (if that's true)? He can't filter himself for a job? I know he does comics, so I can see there being a thin line there between what is an acceptable joke or not. But I hope he's learned from that situation.
There are actually people out there who still believe in most people of certain groups being the stereotypes, so that's how racial/gender/sexuality jokes can be harmful in a way, instead of just being a joke. Those jokes can influence people's thoughts.
I don't really think everyone has to be 100% PC. But there is such a thing as knowing when to joke and when not to. Also, sometimes you have to get a read on people before you can figure out how they will take a joke if you do not want to run the risk of making a bad first impression. Not everyone takes a joke the same way, or understand the actual intent of a person if they just met them, because they don't know them. Once you get to know someone, you have a better gauge on what they find funny and can joke with them in a certain way and have no problems.
I also don't think most people have cried that Andrew is racist (at least, not in the "he hates people of such and such race" way), either, from his jokes. I think some people just thought his jokes were kind of rude and not funny. I think some people overall just found him to be over the top and attention seeking and not funny in this first episode, even if you exclude the racial jokes.
Why haven't they shown an actual preview for this week's episode?
... and this is random, but the restaurant that the roomies ate at (Buco di Beppos) is really yummy. I didn't know they had one of those in DC.
So I already shared a lot of my thoughts about the dc premiere on a [URL="http://www.realitywanted.com/newsitem/2745-the-real-world-dc-katelynn-cusanellis-afterthoughts-episode-1"]blog[/URL] I did for RealityWanted (I've become great friends with one of their writers since Brooklyn wrapped), but I wanted to post more about it here.
I wanted to like Ashley sooo bad. From the jump her video seemed eager and her personality was very excited, but her actions on the first episode alone grated on my nerves. Was Ty being abrasive in his remarks toward religion? Yes. But after the way Ashley accosted Callie when she mentioned she was excited about her Reagan bed, and the heart-to-heart-turned-belligerent with Ty, I'm finding it really difficult to like her.
I give her a lot of leeway because I know how people can be edited to be the spotlight (or invisible), but it's the way she behaves with her new housemates that bothers me. She always has an opinion and always feels as though that opinion is correct. I truly hope she learned some tact during the course of her Real World experience.
I like Andrew in the "I love to hate you" sort of way. I feel like he's the lovechild between Chet and Rockstar Ryan (Joey, Cancun). He doesn't have the natural presence of Isaac, but I think that is primarily due to the massive gap not only in age but in life experiences. Issac had it [B]rough[/B] before his RW debut, and the stoicism it engendered was easily conveyed through the camera. I think with time Andrew will be a fan favorite.
As for Ty... it's hard enough being a young black man in America. It's exponentially harder being an adopted black man in America, and judging from his casting video, he didn't come up in the best of situations. Not that it gives him a free pass or carte blanche access to be an acerbic d-bag, but his beliefs appear to stem from deeply rooted abandonment issues. In his mind it is unfathomable to have faith in a higher power after having to endure such hardships.
Again, it seems like the unifying theme among the housemates thus far is they all lack a great deal of tact. But I like Ty, and I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's because I can empathize with his spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof), but there is just this innate air about him that I am drawn to.
As for the others, Emily is adorable, I think with time Callie will grow on me, and Josh looks like he stepped off of Tool Academy. He may be a great guy, but he reminds me of every slacker that I had to deal with in High School. At any moment I'm expecting him to don a rubber band around his head.
But yeah, I still have high hopes for D.C. I hope they don't get the editing shaft like Brooklyn did mid-season.

Amen, Katelynn!!! I loved your cast soooo much but some of those episodes I found myself wondering why the editors chose to put THAT in an episode rather than something important (i.e. having a whole episode dedicated to pranks). It's been a while since I've seen you post on here. Glad to see you post again! :)
Katelynn - of all people I would think you'd be the first to know that it's ALL about the editing. Sure, Ashley came across a little opinionated, but you have to know that we ONLY see what the editors WANT us to see, not always exactly WHAT happened, or even in the order it happened. They obviously wanted to paint Ashley as an opininista right away, so those are the clips we saw, and not perhaps, when she was apologizing or having a normal conversation with one of the roomies. Sure, she does always have an opinion (who doesn't?), but she certainly doesn't always feel she's correct. She absolutely LOVES to debate, and is always open to listening and discussing other people's feelings and beliefs. I'd just ask you to try to remember times that editing didn't do you, or others in your house justice, and remember that it's a television show for entertainment purposes. It's not entertaining if they don't create drama.
I don't care what anyone says, I think Andrew is HILARIOUS!! I was literally LoL'ing watching the dailies he was in. "Oh, I'll let you know when we have sex."

Well I have only seen what's on the show so far and I think he is pretty funny but something is so off or strange about him to me. I think it's his delivery and overall awkwardness that irks me haha.

Agreed. Definitely all about the editing. I LOVE Ashley - she seems like a girl who knows how to have fun and be confident in her beliefs; people could learn from her!
