I didn't like the episode much personally. They added a bunch of new characters and I can't stand any of them.
Then they got rid of Izzy (for the time being.)
As far as I am concerned, this show is imploding.
I don't think it's imploding. I thought it was a good episode. And GREAT acting especially by Katherine and Justin towards the end. I HATE the Mercy Westers but apparently we're supposed to.
Per Shonda Rhimes Twitter:
ummm....everyone? you are SUPPOSED to hate the Mercy Westers. So if you do, we have done our job well.
about 23 hours ago from web
I can't see them taking over the show a la the House crew. (At least I REALLY hope not.)
I am sad that they fired Izzie. Even though we know she wasn't "fired" from the show, I'm wondering how they will bring her back when she's done with her movie? And WHY did she have to do that to Alex??? He would have been there for her, supported her. He's tried so hard to be a good man that it just breaks my heart that he keeps getting hurt every time he starts to open up. :(
I really liked the scenes with Callie's dad as well. Especially the one with him and Arizona, and at the end where he said "She's not a vegetarian right? Because I don't know how much more I could take." That was so cute.
I'm actually liking this season so far, more than I expected to actually.
I can't see them taking over the show a la the House crew.
More like ER. Are there people left from the beginning that are still on the show? I quit watching when this started happening (i.e. Clooney left.) The producers already said they are using ER as a model.
I thought it was a good episode.
To each their own. I skipped through the Callie/Dad stuff and the Mer/Yang stuff. Didn't leave much to enjoy, being we had to deal with a whole bunch of new people I disliked right off the bat.
ummm....everyone? you are SUPPOSED to hate the Mercy Westers
Ok, so we are supposed to hate them on top of the characters we already hate? I don't get it. When was good television about filling the screen with as many unlikable people as possible? This strategy reeks of the Izzy Fantasy Sex BS from last season. Shonda thinks she has a good idea, it bombs and then it takes all season to back track it (being there are already X amount of episodes in the can.)
The previews for next week already have me dreading the upcoming episode (flashbacks, blah...)
I skipped through the Callie/Dad stuff and the Mer/Yang stuff. Didn't leave much to enjoy, being we had to deal with a whole bunch of new people I disliked right off the bat.

Yeah, if you skipped those scenes you missed the best parts of the episode, acting wise at least. No wonder you didn't like it very much!
Yeah, if you skipped those scenes you missed the best parts of the episode, acting wise at least. No wonder you didn't like it very much!
I agree! I think the Mer / Christina scenes were sweet. Have we EVER seen Christina cry? It was sweet when she crawled up in the bed with Meredith. That's what girlfriends do.

I don't like Mer at all because I don't care for the actress, at all (actually glad to read she'll be missing a few episodes.) I also don't like emotional Yang. Her serious scenes don't ever really go over well being it is hard to tell if she is doing real or doing over the top sarcastic. I started fast forwarding about a minute in after I realized she was going for real (very bad acting in my honest opinion.)
I like Callie, but ever since the forced lesbian change over I have not really been feeling her role on the show as I just don't buy it.
Hey, I am just calling it like I see it. From what I am reading around the blogshere, I am not the only one who feels this way about the current season.
Heck, I was even considering changing the name of this thread to "Mercy West" being that will be the focus of the show until Izzy comes back...
Tonight's episode looks interesting so far.
I know I said I was done watching this show, but hey...there are too many good looking guys to pass up!! :D

it was interesting... but who would of thought an episode with only 2 minutes of Mcdreamy!
It came off as kind of a filler-episode to me, but it was entertaining none-the-less. I felt bad for the girl who got fired, but hey, it's one less new character to get used to. The story in itself was sad. I felt bad for the son and the husband at the end. :( I liked Derrick's speech to the chief, he put him in his place, and quite eloquently I might add.
I'm still not a hundred percent sold on these new characters (and part of me never wants to be as we don't know if they'll be around for the long haul), but they were definitely less annoying than last week.
Next week's episode looks like a snooze. OOooooh Derek does an exciting high-risk controversial surgery and SOMEONE. MIGHT. DIIIIIE. Eh, been there seen that lol.
I actually enjoyed this episode. More medical drama, less frivolous side drama.
The newbies were less annoying, it just sucks the one I liked the most was canned.
That being said, I do agree next week looks like a snoozer. I swear we have already seen that episode and not that long ago either...

I agree. It sucks that the most likable one was gotten rid of, but I guess that was their intention when they didn't make her as annoying as the others in their first episode.
I enjoyed tonight's episode. Though I didn't have high expectations for it, it was good. I like the direction they are going having patients/surgical stories as the forefront, with the personal drama in the background. (Side note: Shonda Rhimes mentioned on her Twitter that we would see more patient-centric storylines this season!)
For lack of sounding cheesy, it was nice to see Derek back in his element and remind us why we liked him in the beginning. He is a surgical genius, smart and good. And I also really liked the character that played the Dr. with the tumor.
I don't like where the Izzie/Alex story is going. I want them to work out. I wish they wouldn't have had her leave the way she did. Yes we knew KH had to take some time off for a movie, but why should the Izzie/Alex storyline have to suffer? And I certainly don't like whatever vibe I seem to be getting between him and Reid. Too soon. TOO soon.
The side-stories were cute too: Lexie in the diaper, Der drawing his surgery on his bedroom wall, and Christina/Owen. Grey's is off to a good start this season. I hope I'm not speaking too soon, but it is drawing me back and reminding why I keep watching it. Hopefully it stays this way.

I also liked this week's episode! It's def much better keeping the patients stories in the forefront... & it was great to see Derek in a strong role again! I thought the whole rogue surgery was great! & the scene was touching where Derek was sitting in his room waiting to tell him that he didn't cut the cord.
The side stories were cute! I'm like lexie more & more...
I can't wait to see where this whole Chief/Derek storyline is gonna go... the Chief has been so terrible this season!
I can't wait to see where this whole Chief/Derek storyline is gonna go... the Chief has been so terrible this season!
Ya, that was rough. I almost felt like I got fired!
Derek handled it well and it will be interesting to see where this goes. He is a superstar and can get a job anywhere so I am guessing the reason he was so cool was because he knows he has pull with the board.

Yeah it could make for an interesting story arc if goes through to Derek having to appeal to the board for re-instatement... Though I can't see it going that far.. the chief has to know he's on shaky ground to start... & he'd never be able to replace Derek... they don't even have a replacement for head of Cardio!
I thought this week's episode was pretty good. I'm not as into the stories that focus around peds, but it was still good. I did like seeing more of Arizona, and I must say the highlight of the ENTIRE episode for me was Justin Chambers, shirtless, holding a baby. *drool*.
Wallace's story was really sad. I just knew he was a goner as he was just so cute and smart and sweet....the story would have to go that way. I really don't like the crap with Christina and the Mercy West guy. (They made out!! Damn you Christina) Or Reed's obvious attraction to Alex. I can see her trying to be the girl that is "there for him" and tries to get him through his problems with Izzie, all the while trying to get him for herself. I can just see it coming.
Next weeks epi looks good. Izzie is back!! And the teaser "You're pregnant?" I'm thinking cannot be true. It was probably just a sound bite thrown in to make us think Izzie (or someone) is pregnant.

Yeah I also enjoyed this week's episode... I really enjoyed the whole Arizona storyline. I liked how the chief finally stepped up & stood up to that guy from the board...
Yeah I knew poor Wallace was a goner too.. but it was so sad because he looked so strong during the first scene...
I don't like Reed's obvious attraction to Alex but I do like that there actually making one of the mercy west people likable... there has just been way to many unlikable characters for one show lately!
I can't wait to see where they go with this Izzie storyline...
So um...I don't like Hunt. I never have. I don't find him attractive. I don't like his roughness when he makes out with Christina. I think he's a bad actor.
Ooooooh I liked this episode! Can't believe we have to wait until January now for a new one!
Molds, I get what you're saying about Hunt. I started out liking Hunt's character, and the actor that played him. At first. But you're right, he get's too EYES! BUGGING! OUT! OF! HEAD! DRAMATIC! It's choppy and it doesn't play out well. But I am glad they didn't to the cheating route with him and Teddy.
Patient of the week stories were good. Dramatic but of course they turned out okay, being the holiday episode and all.
More interesting to me was Mark's daughter. I'm thinking, "Wow, this may be a cool story." And it's not so unbelievable given Mark's character. But they didn't do it right. They fast-forwarded a month ahead and he hadn't even spoken to her? Um, okay. Seems to me like that would be the first thing he did before he let her move in with him. Why not find out why she's there and where her mother is and if she is okay? And then when she told him she was pregnant? Oh NOW we have to grasp that Mark is going to be a grandfather? Er...I dunno what they are doing with this story.
Either way, I really did like the episode overall.

Wow I said almost the exact same thing to my husband last night! I really want to like him, and I love Christina, but they just don't have the right fit for me. I actually enjoyed her kiss with the new guy:)
I am not quite sure how they will play out the Chief's alcoholism, but seems as though he is playing with fire. I am not sure Meredith hiding his drinking will turn out to well in the end. Especially with Derek.
I liked mark's daughter and her being pregnant, I remember a while back he wanted to have a child with Addison. I cannot wait to see how this works out with him and Lexie. I think slowly over time Lexie has became my favorite character somehow!

I'm going to have to disagree about him being a bad actor. Kevin McKidd totally made the HBO series Rome and I think he is doing a good job on Grey's. I might not like where things are going with his character, but I think he can act.
Oh, I'll come clean right now and admit I am totally in love with Kim Raver. Great addition to the cast.
And I agree with everyone else in stating this was a very good episode. I've really been enjoying Grey's of late.
You know, now that I think about it - I can see why you guys find his dialog a bit over the top. While it was great in Rome with the epic scale of that series, it does some a bit out of place here.

Let me rephrase...
I guess I don't necessarily think he's a bad actor. I don't know what it is specifically that bothers me about him, I can't put a finger on it, but I just feel like he is trying too hard. It's almost like he's too dramatic.
I also agree that Kim Raver is an amazing addition to the cast. I've been enjoying the last couple of episodes too.
I'm on the fence with the whole Mark's daughter showing up... it would have been better if she just wanted to meet him... but the whole moving in with him & everything is a bit much to me... Though I think it's funny how Lexie has gone from being a kid to such an adult... I love her character!
I agree I love the addition of Kim Raver... I think they finally have a good fit for a cardio surgeon... they've been missing that since Burke left...
I found those scenes with Bailey & her father great... I might even have shed a few tears for Bailey!
The whole Chief & Meredeth thing can just NOT go well... I don't know where there gonna head with it... but I think dark twisty meredeth is gonna come back because of it!
Fun Fact: I learned over at the Grey's Writer's blog, that the voice that sang "Silent Night" a capella when the surgeons were all at the dinner table together, was actually none other than Sara Rodriguez (Callie!). Before joining Grey's she was belting it out on Broadway in shows like Spamelot and Dreamgirls. Good for her!
And that was a great scene by the way.
I liked that scene too... I've always liked the holiday episodes they do when they take a minute to all sit down together... shows how they really are each other's family...
Like when Burke taught Izzie how to cook thanksgiving dinner that one year...

I thought it was really cute too how Bailey's dad thought it was inappropriate to talk about bowels at the dinner table, whereas everyone else didn't even flinch lol.
You should hear the things we talk about in the breakroom at my work! ;)
So apparently Karev has a one-night stand with someone on the Jan 21st episode and they have it narrowed down to 6 lovely ladies:
Reed
Lexie
Addison
Meredith
Cristina
Bailey
Alex seeks solace at Joe's bar, where his inebriation, as it often does on this show, sends him straight into a one-night stand. Who, you ask? BAILEY FTW!!!!
