I hate when people complain about the yankees spending money to improve their team. I hate the yankees, but if their owner wants to spend millions of dollars on talented players then more power to him. I bet you wouldnt be complaining if your team had got texierra and sabathia. If the yankees win the series then they deserve it.

I'm calling BS right now as it is not like the other teams in the league didn't want those players, it was that we could not meet their contract demands (i.e. money) and the Yankees are the reason they cost so much in the first place.
It would be one think if the Yankees were spending a few dollars more than the next guy, but they are spending 81 Million more than the next guy. To put that in perspective, half of major league teams don't even spend as much total as they are spending more than the team spending the second most!
Something has to be done to reign this in, as it is absolutely ridiculous.

See I think my problem is more with MLB. Even as a Red Sox fan, who loves her team and knows that most of the players wouldn't be there if we didn't have the money to spend, I would much rather have the wealth spread across the league. I think some players are getting paid way too fricken much, ::cough:: A-Rod ::cough::, and I think that leads to a lot of those organizations pricing fans out of the games. I love being able to see my home team get to the play offs time and time again even if that means being swept, but how much must it suck for like Royals fans who know their team is going to loose and loose horribly and they most likely have no chance of seeing them in a playoff game just because their organization can't/won't spend the money. For now, I'll take the good with the bad and hopefully get to enjoy another winning season next year :) I do know that I am happy A-Rod didn't end up on the Sox, that's for sure. I'll give up his home runs and clutch plays to avoid all the drama and baggage that comes with him!

The Red Sox spend money and have money because of the ticket prices, a good sized market and the ticket prices...that being said, their payroll is in line with their peers. Teams 2-12 on the list are all quite close (within 40+ million of each other.) And then there is this whale of a team that outspends everyone by so much it becomes a joke.
Anyway, I'm sure if the Red Sox had an extra say, 81 million to spend in the off season and added 4 Mark Teixeira's (which would put the division rivals on equal payroll footing) we'd be a little better....

i dont see how you are calling bs. the yankees have money to spend and they spend it. Its not their fault other teams dont have as much money to spend. The rangers are my favorite team, would i like them to be able to spend like the yankees do, **** yes. But they cant, that doesnt mean im upset that the yankees can spend more. And your a Red Sox fan, they spend alot of money themselves, its not like your cheering for a "poor" team.
Any picks for the World Series guys??
People are still watching baseball?
The Yankee$ bought and paid for this ring in the off season. There is no suspense here. Should be an easy Yankee$ sweep all the way through and hopefully next year they won't spend 100 or 200 million more than the next closest team so others might have a chance at winning against their free agent all star squad...
Aww snap!
YouTube - Rivera spit ball Yankees vs Angles ALCS 10-19-09
Do we think he spit on the ball or on the ground? And if he did spit on the ball can we take away all the Yankees World Championships ever?? PLEASE!! :D
LOL good one tatertots.
How about Jimmy Rollins!!!! Killed it last night! That was a nail bighter :)
Yankees take a loss!!
More to come, what do you guys think?
Right now it looks to be the Phillies and maybe the Yankees.....I am hoping the Angels can win tonight to tie that series up.
Yeah I'm totally hoping that the angels can tie it up tonite! I'm hoping for an angels/Dodgers World series... i know.. it's a long shot!
haha.... who would want that kind of repeat!!!
Well I'd rather see the Yankees out. But the Dodgers would have to pull a RedSox type comeback to win now.

Yeah I know... I thought for sure the Dodgers were gonna pull last nite out!!! Errr... If the Yankees play the phillies in the world series... who on earth would i root for??? haha
God. I can't believe I'm hearing these rumors about Joe Mauer and Jason Bay going to the Yankees on WEEI today......
Yeah I heard the Mauer rumor myself... though every big name at every position is rumored to be a yankee... no wonder they have so many championships...
Yeah I heard the Mauer rumor myself... though every big name at every position is rumored to be a yankee... no wonder they have so many championships...
People often say, you are just mad the Yankees got "X" player and you wish you could have gotten him (when talking about just about every off season in recent memory.)
The main issue is (shocker coming!) Money.
Let's talk Jason Bay. The Sox can probably afford to give him 14-15 million a year x4 - MAX. That means the Yankees will offer him 16-20 million. He can take the team discount, or go with the Yankees. That is a decision every top tier free agent All Star makes in the off season.
It is no accident that the Yankee payroll is 80+ million higher than the next guy. They are willing to pay a massive premium on every player. Not only that, they bid on players they are not even interested in to drive up the cost for other teams (especially the Red Sox.)
Baseball salaries are out of control. While I do not fully believe in a hard cap, I do think that there should be a much more painful luxury tax (right now it is 40% penalty over $155 million or about $20+ million for the Yankees this year.)
I propose a graduated tax based on the average payroll of the top 10 spending teams (rather than a set cap.) The reason to not use the league average is that some teams choose to not spend money because they are greedy and not in it to win it. Usually the top 10 are spending to try and get a ring so it is a more honest number of what teams should spend to stay competitive.
Penalty Tax Brackets:
10% above average10 - $1 per dollar over.
20% above average10 - $1.05 per dollar over.
30% above average10 - $1.10 per dollar over.
40% above average10 - $1.20 per dollar over.
50% above average10 - $1.25 per dollar over.
60% above average10 - $1.30 per dollar over.
70% above average10 - $1.35 per dollar over.
So for instance, this year the average is around $132 million. The Yankees are 63% above the average, so they would pay $100.1 million in taxes. The Red Sox would pay 6 million (as would the Mets and Tigers.) Everyone else would be below the cap.
Now, $100 million is quite ridiculous - but I promise you if there was a system like the one above in place, no team would stray very far from the mean...
You sound very bitter. You made some good points, but at the end of the day I dont think a team should be penalized for spending money. Yeah the system in baseball isnt fair, but life isnt fair. Its not like the yankees have won 5 world series in a row, they havent won in like 8 years or something. And i dont think they will have an easy time winning the title this year because the phillies will give them ****.
You sound very bitter. You made some good points, but at the end of the day I dont think a team should be penalized for spending money.
Spending money is one thing. The Red Sox spend money. Spending tens of millions more than the next closest team is another matter altogether. That being said, I can see how it would be hard for you to understand, being you are a Rangers fan.
It is not like you have to play the Yankees 18 times a year. It is not like every free agent you look at is bid on by the Yankees out of spite to raise the asking price even when they are not interested. And as the Angels will soon find out, having an extra $91 Million in All Stars on a squad makes winning close to impossible.
(To make that easier to understand, just remove these players from the Yankees to even the ALCS payrolls: Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia. Yes, if those players were not on the Yankees roster, they'd STILL be outspending the Angels who have the 6th highest payroll in the league!)
I'm not bitter. We've won 2 World Series since 2000 and the Yankees have none (although they have pretty much bought the 2009 edition) and 6 of the last 7 seasons have been 95 win plus. We've had some good years.
The problem is that for the Red Sox to compete, ticket prices had to go up 6 times or more (depending on the seats) in the last 10 years. So now a middle class fan goes to see maybe two games (maybe none) a year instead of ten or twelve. Everything about this payroll arms race is bad for the average fan. It goes beyond just competition.
Fan index (what it costs to take a family of 4 to a baseball game.)
Boston $320.71
Next highest...
New York Mets $259.84
New York Yankees $251.19

Near the bottom...
Texas Rangers $148.04
Hey, I'm not really that worried. The Red Sox are in the Rockefeller clan of baseball and will have a top 5 payroll every year. We have a massive media market and charge the highest average ticket prices in the league (by a mile.) We have all sorts of money, just not ridiculous money. The more the Yankees spend, the more we will be forced to raise ticket prices to try and field a team that is within 60% payroll wise of what the financial bullies on the block are spending.
Actually, I feel even worse for the other teams (outside the top ten) as they will NEVER get a top tier free agent, EVER.
So hey, if you think it is good for baseball that one team can buy championships, fine. However, many of us think that when you can pay the salary of two MLB franchises with the money OVER the next closest spender, something is wrong and the disparity too great...
