7 runs given up by SMoltz. I am ashamed to be a SOx Fan right now. Traber gives up a 3 run bomb by Posada.........9-3.........I am just ashamed right now. Get Smoltz the **** out of here.
I am calling it right now, after some more back and forth homers (this is the new Yankee stadium we are talking about people, there WILL be more homers!), Lowrie will hit a grand slam to win it! haha it's just that kind of night. The score will be 34-31. :D
Would you like to change ur response tater?
Fine, it will be Nick Green hitting for the cycle and ending with a Grand Slam ;) How's that!?
Le sigh. Of course the one game NOT being nationally broadcast this weekend is the one Beckett is pitching. But yay for Smoltz being DFA'd! It was really just getting sad.
Ok, I am officially calling the season over. I hope that I come to regret this in the months ahead, but we just don't have what we need to be successful.
We don't have the half billion dollars of new players like the Yankees and the guys we have are either past their prime (*cough* Ortiz *cough*) or injured.
While there are a few bright spots like Beckett and Bard, overall we are hurting and Theo did not make any game changing moves before the season or at the trade deadline to give the team a new, stronger face.
We have some of the highest ticket prices in baseball, yet are always bargain shopping for geezers or utility players and don't want to trade any of our minor league talent who end up washing out as soon as the reach the majors anyway...
The good news is...FOOTBALL! Yes, football is just around the corner!
There are lots of losers in NY. Enough to rig any poll.
The fact that the questions in the poll were rigged to start is telling.
As if a Red Sox Fan would vote for a traitor. It was a no win poll.
Psh, what about Pedro vs. Zimmer! Or A-Rod slapping the ball, or Roberts stealing second? Drew's grand slam? A-Rod vs Varitek, The Bloody Sock...now those are Sox vs Yanks moments!
What the ****? Seriously?! Yeah, the Sox who are on a downward spiral and hurting for pitchers are really going to intentionally throw at A-Rod in a 2 run game, riiight. Ugh. So it's ok for the Yanks to throw over Pedroia then hit him when they are up like 6 runs, but it's not cool for us to brush off Teixeira, which Yankee pitchers had also done to some of our batters in the same game, then unintentionally hit A-Rod when we are down? Ok then. Not even a warning? Again, what the ****.
I wish I had 500 million to respond.
Long story short. I quit.
We are billions outside of competitiveness. I am not kidding. We are between 500 million and a billion dollars out of competition in the American league. It is not close.
Someone bought a championship. What are we to do.

I say take the year off so we can be nice and relaxed and healthy then come back strong next year! Maybe get some new pitchers in the mix too. It has been a rainy summer in Boston, the Sox started off well but there are just too many hurt with not enough power right now. We've had way too many extra innings games so our bullpen is beat up and nothing really to show for it. I would rather have a healthy team next year than a beat up team that just barely makes it to the playoffs. Remember though, miracles do happen! Right?
The redsox have more than enough money to compete with yankees. They signed John smoltz to a gauranteed 5.5 million contract (ending up getting paid around 7 million) They also gave Schilling 8 million last year for nothing and they also pay penny 5 million or so. Instead of these low risks players theo could signed a guy like lowe and have a solid 1-5 with an wakefield and clay battling for the 5th spot.
If the yankees win this year, it will prove you can buy baseball.
It is not a game anymore. We work at 1/20 of the yankees and it is clear they have bought this season.
Plus or minus half a billion.
Fine you cant compete with the yankees because thier payroll is higher than yours but whats your exscuse for not being able to compete with the rays.

They are younger, healthier and on a roll. Plus, we always have bad luck at the Trop. I think Wakefield is the only pitcher that has a good record there.

I am confused as last I heard the rays were not who we were competing with in this cycle. Any team can have a year. To be in the hunt for 100 years is another story.
If you are a Rays fan, I am sorry.
We should have bought your better players. Maybe next year we will.
We need to start giving up minor league talent.

So what was the excuse for the Red Sox winning the World Series? They spend just as much money as the Yankees, but no one seems to complain about their bankroll.
I'm fairly new here so I don't know if you are a Red Sox fan or not, but they have quite the hefty bankroll themselves, so it's not just the Yankees buying wins.
The Yankees may buy good players, but that doesn't guarantee victory. I don't think we've even won a World Series yet with A-Rod, I don't think he was with us in 2000 when the Mets got stomped.
The Yankees have finally gotten their act together this year. They've been good the last few years, but they just can't push it in the post-season and win the big one. I think this year they might be able to win it, so the excuse of buying a victory is just whiners that can't get over the Yankees winning. It's not their fault for being that **** good. :)

People complain about the Sox payroll all the time! In recent memory, we have never spent as much as the Yankees and there is usually a team or two's worth of difference in the payrolls. For example:
2004:
Sox #2 @ $ 127,298,500
Yanks #1 @ $ 184,193,950
2007:
Sox #2 @ $ 143,026,214
Yanks #1 @ $ 189,639,045
2009:
Sox #4 @ $ 121,745,999
Yanks #1 @ $ 201,449,189
Right around 2002-2003 the big divide started to happen in payrolls with the Yanks taking the top spot by a LARGE margin every year.
As a Yanks fan I would think you would know that ARod came to you in 2004. ;)
In 2004, Sox had 4 players with a salary of $10mil+, Yanks had 8. Both teams had 1 player with $20mil+ Manny being payed slightly more than ARod by $500,00
In 2007, Sox had 5 players with a salary of $10mil+, Yanks had 12. Boston had no players with a salary $20mil+, Yanks had 3.
In 2009, Sox have 4 players with a salary of $10mil+, Yanks have 9. Boston has no players with a salary $20mil+, Yanks have 2 and 1 player earning more than $30mil.
You are right that you cannot always buy a World Series championship, but it definitely gives you a much better chance. Sometimes things click right, sometimes they don't. I think you can buy yourself into the post season and from then on it is pretty much a new game depending on the depth (can be bought) and the health of the team. For anyone in the AL East competing against a team, the Yankees, that consistently spends the most money on top players, you have to spend a lot too. If you want a chance at the Pennant, heck if you want a chance at the Wild Card you have to spend money in the AL East. If the Sox were in a different league they would have to spend accordingly to stay competitive with their league rivals be it the Angels, Cub, Rangers, whatever. The Sox just happen to have to compete with the team that has the highest payroll year after year.
Just so you know, there are many Sox fans here, Bacchus and I being some of them! :D

Those are great points tatertots! I'm a Sox fan and I'm sick of hearing about how we spend as much as the Yanks.

Same here. I admit that we spend A LOT, especially since salaries have started to skyrocket, but if there is a team or two's worth of difference than it's obvious the Yanks are spending way more than us!
All this overspending drives me crazy... it really starts to suck the fun out of baseball for me... & I'm a met fan so it's not like my team is innocent... but it's so much more fun to watch teams grow into championships than to watch one bought....
