Real World Casting Secrets - Revealed
Hi there… I’m bothered by a couple of things I have read recently while hanging out on the stage right minding my own business. Now, I know that I’m a 31 year old who has never auditioned for Real World; however, I have been on the human resources interview teams for Google, Apple, Microsoft, and not to mention that I interviewed for a position at the CIA some 5 years back – a process that is far more rigorous than for a reality TV, and I know that for fact as I have a close friend who is a casting director…not for Real World…but other reality shows. For all of you who think there are no “secrets” to making it past the first couple of rounds in the reality show casting process, you’re wrong. The first round or two of auditions serve the exact same purpose as the early rounds of interviewing for Google, which receives some 20,000 applicants a month. You need to read what they are looking for…if that is Spanish speaking skills then make sure they know that. If it is to be a “one-eyed, diseased, addict” as posted in the DC thread then say that. The casting directors are INTERVIEWING you for a culture fit of what they are looking for the season. They likely spend the first round or two getting to know your background and then move onward to behavioral-style interviews to develop a profile for how you will react when living with different kinds of people. That means – they are going to ask a lot of questions about your friends, your family, and try to put you on the spot to get a reaction – the CIA does this too, except they hook you up to a polygraph exam while I doubt Real World does.
No kidding! I interviewed for a position at the CIA right after college. That was intense. I had to send my transcripts, take a 3 hour exam, send a writing sample, and the interviews were intense as they were kinda aggressive to see if you could handle the pressure. That process took even longer than the RW auditions actually...I didn't make it to the polygraph section though. I also applied at Google...twice...but didn't get an interview. So sad as it was one of my top picks, but I landed a good job anyways.

Business students, particularly finance majors going for top firms, tend to understanding the interviewing process and techniques more than most people. With that being said, let me have a mother moment. Pick your battles wisely on here. Chill out. Sit back. Don't be quite so intense with your responses and people will likely listen to you more -- you don't have bad advice, but you have to work on the delivery.
So your saying, basically no offense to anyone but, Every Real Worlder or potential RWer, were/are basically pawns in BMP's whole business game of making more money/ establishing themselves as a bigger entity. So regardless of how much character a potential castmember has, the only importance is if they fill the preliminary bulletpoints/roles? Just for clarification, and up-do respect.

In the "big picture" I think that's the truth, be it harsh and ugly.

The show, and everything in it, have to remain marketable and a cash cow in order for it to stay around.

Is it better to go on a casting call or send an audition tape. Can both be done??
So I was browsing through some duel dailies earlier and on the home page they have a twitter section. One twitter update was from BMP which said "RT@BunimMurray: Watching casting tapes....Are we watching yours?" Does this mean their already looking for potential RW24 cast? Don't they usually have a press release for auditions?

However, I think that there is a specific time that they look for the new season's cast members, which hasn't come up for RW24 since they have to start shooting the DC season first. I believe it's supposed to start in August.
Someone mentioned that they'll say what they're looking for just before they begin casting. Just out of curiousity, how do you find that out? Is it stated in the casting call on the website or do you have to do some digging to find out? I'm not trying to audition; I'm way too shy and don't like to party really, so they'd probably hate me, haha. But still, this was a really interesting post to read about the casting process! I didn't realize it was so involved and everything.

It's very early for them to be looking for cast...it won't benefit you to try out now vs wait a couple of months...regardless, they won't finish casting for 24 until late 2009/early 2010.

I mean -- what they say is very broad and general...but it gives people some direction. Bottom line is if they like you then they like you and they will look at you...but certain seasons definitely have a vibe to them and they drop hints during interviews.

Will there be an online contest for season 24? Since DC seems to be a more serious season, I'm guessing 24 will be a party season.

Whether the 24 is a party season will depend upon ratings for Cancun and opinion polls they do to predict the polls for DC. And I think DC will have a solid party element to it...but it will have 1 or 2 people with legit substance.

Hello everyone. I'm new to Vevmo, and the Real World process, but i have wanted to audition for this show since I was 16. i wanted to wait until I was 21, though. Reading all this information has been very interesting and helpful. I do have a few questions though. 1. Can you send in a video, email AND go to a casting call? 2. Does an email really do anything for you? I sent mine in earlier this week , but I don't think I'll hear anything about it. 3. If you get on the show, is everything paid for? food, going out and drinking, or does that come out of your "paycheck"? Thanks to everyone in advance to helping me answer my questions!
moriah, I think that you can do all 3 but I'm not sure if that would help or hinder your chances. I've heard that the best method is doing a video because that way you can really showcase your personality the way that you want to and not feel nervous or on the spot like you would at an open call. I sent an email and got nothing back, but that was probably because when I sent it they were deep into casting for DC and not paying attention to any new applications. I plan on sending a video once they announce casting for RW24. I'm not sure about the bars/clubs, but I know that they pay for their own food.
Thanks behindme. I really appreciate it. I'm pretty nervous about my video. I tend to over think things sometimes, but oddly enough when I'm on the spot, I do just fine...usually. So I'm hoping to go to an open call, but I want to send in my video. but like you said, it could help or hinder it. I should have waited a few more days to send in my email. this site would have helped so much!
Yeah I believe the only thing that is paid for is the house bills...not including the phone calls. Also I think thier Subway food may be free or discounted, but I am not sure.
I don't know if you answer a question similar to this but can you tell me a couple of things you did to make your video funny?
Good evening everyone...I have 2 questions. 1) Okay so from reading all the 22 pages on how the casting works. I completely got the details saved in my head...from reading what Milo said. He would recommend me do a video...well the question is if I send a email 5 days ago with random pictures of me with friends, posing, and in random places. with a informative bio basically a quick info about myself. Should I do a 3min-5min video and send it to them to get to know me a little more or wait intill I get a email back from them in the next month or 2? (hopefully) I got my digital camera ready to record with my funny/random idea ready to go. 2) Emilee if u read this how was your process? Because I'm trying to submit for season 24 (after the DC since they already starting filming). I dont want to be tacky....i'm going to be myself and not be fake in anyway to show off...I trust in my charisma to play a big role. Im not doing this to be a actor I just want to do this for a life experience as you all say which I truely agree with 95% of the former and current real world cast mates. I for one want to pursue my real dream of being a chef/cook which has nothing to do with air time. cheers,
thanks for the info, this will be really useful, because i am going to try out this year.

Does that include groceries and gas or just utilities, internet and phone service.
Do you know when they are going to do the next Real World casting call? What do they talk about most on the audition tape? I am waiting for them to do a casting call in Washington DC. Do you have to bring anything to the casting call?

I think in the past they said photos. On an audition tape they mostly want to see your personality and what you like to do, etc. Check this out for more:Bunim/Murray Productions
What kind of questions do they ask you at the casting call group interviews? What do they start off saying and what do you have to bring with you at the casting call? What photos of famous people did you have to comment on?
what if you have something other thin a drivers license? Are they stirct about the age limit?
I am going through the casting process right now, and just have a really random question for Milo or anyone else who is in it right now too: Whenever MTV calls me, and this has happened several times, it's from a FOUR DIGIT PHONE NUMBER. For example, 702-4 will be the # on my caller ID and that's how I know it is them. CAN ANYONE ELXPLAIN THIS TO ME, it's actually driving me insane. Thanks!
