That's not diversity because being gay is sexuality not a color.
That's not diversity because being gay is sexuality not a color.
Sure it is. Diverse means "differing from one another". It could be sexuality, race, background, opinion, you name it. It's not just about race.
In my opinion, it doesn't really matter. Sure it would be nice to see some diversity on the show. But to me, as long as the people are intresting I could care less what they look like/what their background is.
Here is the rule of thumb from my casting experience. When you cast to fill the diversity box, you luck out if you find good people. When you cast good people and they just happen to be diverse, too, you have hit the jackpot. No one watches politically correct TV, because it never is any good.
If you look at it, the real world is just as if not more diverse than any other reality show. I can't think any other show that has had a more than 50% non-white cast like Hollywood had.

We haven't had a lesbian on the show in awhile. Was Aneesa that last lesbian to appear on the RW?
Out in the open type?
Yes, out in the open..
The way I see it is, as long as the cast is interesting, I don't care what they look like or who they're attracted to... And it seems a lot of the times on this show, they use diversity as stereotypes often. As in many of the African American women they cast are cast to be the outspoken, loud, "*****" of the house. Or many of the gay cast members are catty and pot-stirrers. Not trying to knock the casting directors or the cast members themselves, but just something I noticed.
Alright, here is the full list of cast members (164) from every season to date (including Cancun.) I think it would be nice if we could list their self identified race, their stated sexual preference and maybe a third delimiter for other factors that would be considered diverse (like an illness such as Pedro's.) I figure this will take us a few days and there is plenty of nuance (as brought up in previous posts in this thread) so we will have to intelligently discuss those points. Once we have a base of data we can then attempt to use it to get a better picture of the Real World. Note: I quickly grabbed from wikipedia all the cast members, so I am sure there are a few errors along the way that need to be corrected. Um.. uh ... thats a VERY long list. Lol. But thanks for creating it. I think we can find out what their race is by checking their myspace pages? Some castmembers have it there. But the choices aren't specific. Like behindme stated, some cast members might be Irish or something else and they just had to go with "White/Caucasian".
Like behindme stated, some cast members might be Irish or something else and they just had to go with "White/Caucasian".
Irish is not a race per say as they would be technically classified as European Caucasian, however Arabic and Persian could be considered as such and can continue to be broken down into subsets. That being said, for the purposes of this study I think that we should try to be true to the Census as a starting point. White/African American/Hispanic/Asian & Other - and we will go with how the cast members self identify (later we can try and account for discrepancies in Census data and Caucasian over representation.) p.s. I'll start with Parisa and see what she has to say on the subject. Overall, there are not many in the cast as a whole that will be overly difficult to categorize using the simplified Census rules with the information that is available.
Molds was kind enough to take the time and get our spreadsheet started! We are well on our way to getting the core information in order to make an initial assessment.

Everyone take a look and I'll continue to add to the spreadsheet as we add more data from discussions in this thread. p.s. I included a PDF for those without Excel.
Question...Why is Zack Mann labeled Jewish and not Svet ( Russian Jew)? Just for example Rachel Moyal is a Caucasian Jew...Not Latino
Question...Why is Zack Mann labeled Jewish and not Svet ( Russian Jew)? Just for example
I didn't know. Is she Russian Orthodox? If you guys fill me in on what I missed, I will edit the list and repost it when it's more complete.
I didn't know. Is she Russian Orthodox?
No...Her family are Russian immigrants who happen to be Jewish.
If you guys fill me in on what I missed, I will edit the list and repost it when it's more complete.
Exactly. There are too many cast members at current to know everything about everyone right off the top of one's head. However, as a group I am sure we can do a good job.
CM, do you know if Jenn is Latina? I wasn't exactly sure what her self-identifying race was.
CM, do you know if Jenn is Latina? I wasn't exactly sure what her self-identifying race was.
She is a whole lot of things.
Parisa tells me she checks both boxes (other, white) depending on the circumstance. Ffor something official such as a Census, she would check "other" and write in Middle Eastern.
Correction to the list: Janelle, Irulan, Arissa are all half Caucasian. Shavonda and Aneesa are also mixed. Idk what Aneesa is mixed w/ but I read on Shavonda's myspace awhile ago that she's also part Cherokee and Irish.

Also, we need to add in two more categories form the census: Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander American Indian and Alaska Native
Why are you all putting all "white" people together. As if diversity is only dtermined by skin color. What about religions (Issac being jewish)/ Chet being Norman. Career Fields (Ryan in the army) 9Lacy a hairstylist) Surley there is more to diverstiy than what you look like. Its what you do and how you act as well.
Surley there is more to diverstiy than what you look like. Its what you do and how you act as well.
No one is trying to say that a single data point defines diversity, however it will give us a clearer picture of the cast in relation to the populace as a whole based on that statistical analysis. The more information we have across a wide range of demographic delimiters, the better we will be able to break down "diversity" based on that data. We need to start somewhere. Heck, we could go crazy and add ***, age, geographic region, etc. Depends on how far reaching we this informal study to be!

We should ask RMD1 since he/she knows her personally :D
Here is a (slightly) updated version. As for the "other" column: only those who have specifically mentioned their sexuality/political preference/addiction/adoption/disease have been included as well as those who lived internationally at the time of their appearance on the Real World. Also, for some I do not know specifically where they have originated from. You will notice for some (for example, Johanna) we know that she is from Peru, which is why I have that in parentheses. Some I do not completely know their country of descent (for example Pam from SF).
Beth Anthony, Lesbian, is now straight/married/children
I believe Genesis is also straight now. Also, Shavoun Torres is part Latino/Caucasian.
I believe Genesis is also straight now. Also, Shavoun Torres is part Latino/Caucasian.
"I believe" will not work for me. Until you can confirm it for me, it stays.
