Real World Diversity
I hope that this season has a mixture of races. Every season is just 1 Gay castmember, 1 African American castmember, and the rest is just repeating history. I would love for them to put 2 African Americans, a Lesbian, 2 Asians, 2 Whites, and someone that has a very interesting lifestory or someone that is Isamic. That'll be the perfect cast, imo. I'm hoping I'll get a cast like this in upcoming seasons... even better, in D.C.
Every season is just 1 gay castmember, 1 black castmember, and the rest is just repeating history.
Two seasons ago there were 5 African American cast members (in total) with no openly gay cast members. Let's not stereotype the stereotype. p.s. There was someone of Islamic faith a season before that.

I have to agree blanky....the most diverse cast I have ever seen was RW:Hollywood (5 African Americans) and RW:Cancun (2 Hispanics, 1 African American, and 1 girl who's mix). I think the Real World should be a little more diverse. Since it is abou the Real World. I'm Hispanic, and I will love to see an Asian person, or someone who orgins are from the middle east. I live in NY and I could count with fingers how many people I know from this group. I will love to learn more about them.

I just noticed that people commenting over at MTV's Cancun Teaser are saying the same thing. Freaky huh?
I'm all for descendants of the Roswell crash if they are interesting. If not, I don't want to see them on my TV screen.
You also have to take into consideration how many people of a certain race try out, and how many people of that race are actually interesting. Seriously, why cast a certain race just to bring a certain "equality" if they are completely boring? I am all for being equal and trying to bring diversity, but not if diversity, means a worthless show.

But I understand how sometimes it can end up being boring sometimes.
Diversity makes an equal show, but not an interesting cast necessarily. Because diversity could imply a range of things like diversity in ethnicity which doesn't mean entertainment at all. This season has already said they are looking for someone with something tragic so I have faith.

I remember they said someone with weight issues but I couldn't remember the rest.

I think diversity would be interesting....it's a way to go back to the old RW, and bring the drama of the new ones. Imagine a strict Christian rooming with someone who is a strict Muslim. I would love to see an interaction, positive or negative. Religion is another thing that should be discuss, since it's a huge part of society. I'm Catholic, and if I ever do the RW, and I have a roomie who's atheist, I will love to know why, and how they come to that decision. I'm not going to shove my religion down their throat, but I will love to see why they stand for their beliefs. I think it will be a great, serious TV discussion.
The diversity should reflect real life.
That would be great Producer and I would enjoy it. But then you have to take into consideration how many people may find distaste in that. Which would be weird, but it's possible. And then you have to take into consideration if they won't fly off the handle ridiculously. I think The Real World is about diversity, but it is found in many places.

But sadly, the editors gave up a good opportunity and only focused on the drama and less on the barely different lifestyles... My apologies for making this thread go a bit off topic.

I agree Dartagnan...that's another reason I will love a discussion like that. To show society, that we all can't run or deny the seperation between groups. The only way issues can be resolve is by sitting and discussing. Of course there will be people disgusted, but the issue has to be brought up and discuss. Not hidden and people ignoring it, because a will never move on in society. Frankly WHEN I do the RW (thinking positive LOL )....I would love to have a diverse group of roomies, and hopefully we can show other people, that society can move on, to a better place.
If BMP were true to census data, there would be much less diversity in the cast (I think.) There are only 7-8 slots. As much as I moan about BMP Productions, I think in recent years they have done a reasonable job (including this most recent cast) at offering a fair look at America culturally (with the exception of Asian representation.) The reality is, 5.5 of 8 cast members "should" be white if they were to be true to the demographic data. This demo is changing yearly and I think they are at least attempting to capture that shift in the populace - but saying that The Real World has not been diverse is ridiculous unless you mean there has not been an over representation of certain groups. However...I think a careful race study should be done. Anyone up for going through every cast member and pulling together the data? It would be interesting (and for another thread of its own.)

Lol.
B you have a great point. I think that lately casts have been very diverse, and that every cast has had diversity in its own way. I expect the same of D.C.

Yeah Bacchus I was trying to say as an overall look of what the Real World looks like. I do give them credit, because they have been very diverse lately, but I just want to see a more correct look of what the the US is today.
I think I will go through all the casts tomorrow and try to put some numbers together (unless someone beats me to it.) I'd like to see how it breaks down vs. what we have as factual data from the government, plus we will have to use loose numbers for those in "non traditional" relationships (as that is not calculated in the census.) Does The Real World represent America? This is a really good question.

Does The Real World represent America? This is a really good question.
Yes, I'd say it does represent America. The majority of the US is white. But, if you are talking about the world, then probably not. (I'm not trying to be a smart *** if it comes off as that. I'm just saying that if your just talking about our country, then yes it does represent)
if you are talking about the world, then probably not.
I don't think the goal of this show was ever to represent the life of 20 somethings in Malaysia (or Czechoslovakia for that matter.) Maybe I'm wrong. That out of the way. Let's get the numbers so we can see what is actually happening. I'm a data person. Talk is cheap.
I think an interesting thing to note is that when it comes to census data, "white" encompasses a good deal of minorities. I'm Iranian but whenever I fill out anything that asks my race, including the census, I have to put white/caucasian. Also, there are notably less people auditioning of Asian/Middle Eastern descent because a lot of the people who are in the age range are first generation (like myself). I can't speak for anyone else, but I know that my parents and many peoples' parents who I know who are in the same situation would view being on the show as something that would look "bad" to the community, etc., especially since many people whose families immigrated here had very traditional upbringings. I don't know if this explains it well enough...but I guess it's kind of hard to convey exactly what my family/the families of others that I know would say.

I havn't noticed that. Of course since I am hispanic, they have a choice on the list that states "Hispanic/Latino" so I never have noticed.

I'm half Iranian and my dad has to put white/caucasian as well. But as a first generation, most of our parents would look down upon doing something like the real world or reality TV. I think during Sidney we heard Parisa make some of those type of comments in passing. Like when she went to the gaypride parade and a few of the housemates refused to go, Parisa explained how she would be hated by the Muslim community. And that's probably true. Half the things that go down on the Real World would be viewed as a disgrace to the Community. Even if your parents were a little less strict as mine are, all their friends and relatives would see the show and likely disown you for just having fun on the real world.

I think RW is diverse, with the exception of Asian people, but maybe that's just me?
I don't think its diverse at all. Its either black/white/latino or gay or all 4.
I don't think its diverse at all. Its either black/white/latino or gay or all 4.
Um...wouldn't having all four be considered diversity?
No, cause you can be one or the other and but still be gay.
No, cause you can be one or the other and but still be gay.
You lost me. You can be one or the other in terms of what? Race? Or are you talking about being biracial? My point (or what I got from your original post) is that if you have a black person, a latino person, a white person, and a gay person in a house together, I would consider that diversity. Or are you trying to say something different? Your post was a bit confusing. I guess it would help if you elaborated on what your "its" means in your first post.
Um...wouldn't having all four be considered diversity?
Well, imo, if you have the same four in constant seasons, it would start to get boring. Real World is diverse, but I just believe that the casts should be more different in terms of casting.
