I don't think that Ryan and Chet, just from what I've seen so far, would be hateful (at least intentionally) to Katelynn just because they are wondering things. I sure hope they wouldn't be. It's just like it's (whether or not she was born a man or woman) the pink elephant in the room. Something seemed different about her so they are just wondering. I think it's kind of natural. It's the way they handle that curiosity that is the issue for me. I kind of agree with Ryan that it's not something that they need to just go out and ask her. I wouldn't feel comfortable with it. Yet at the same time, I don't mind JD wanting to take her to dinner. He feels he has a certain connection to her. But I do think it's up to her to answer if she wants to or not.
Scott +1
I also hope that through this journey they learn to not be so closed minded to people who have a different background besides theirs. Having Ryan call Katelynn it made me cringe so bad, I could not imagine being in Katelynn's shoes those first days in the house.
Yes, this is a little rough to watch.
I'm trying not to judge Chet or Ryan, but I have low tolerance for ignorance. But I guess they are being upfront with their discomfort...we'll see how it goes from here.
But so far Ryan is coming up smelling a tad bit better than Chet.

That is something both guys would agree on as they look back on things.
I love this season. This is the first premiere in a couple of seasons when there wasn't some wild, gross, and nasty hook-up. The cast is a breath of fresh air from the drunken **** we've seen.

I agree. I do think Ryan is coming off better than Chet. But though I know of their backgrounds, I am not going to assume they would behave horribly towards Katelynn. I think they are just curious right now. I am still giving them a chance. This world is very fixed on gender roles and it can be a shock for people when they can't completely place something into one category. But that doesn't mean a person who is shocked is automatically hateful or going to make a bunch of insensitive comments. I will be upset if they treat her badly, though. I really hope that won't happen.

Agreed.
The aftershow doesn't start until 11:30pm for me.
I'm real late to the game here, not having read anything about any of the cast. But I'd really hate to see Katelynn alienated because some can't accept her. My aunt Jackie (previously uncle Jack) had a lot of problems with acceptance...anyway, it's a hard world out there.
So far so good to me! Chet and Ryan made me cringe a few times, but it makes me excited for how much potential for growth there is there! It was definately a great first episode and lived up to all the hype for a new Real World.
I wished they showed the other girls and Scott a bit more, but I also feel like they didn't sell Katelynn's story short and make it into a sitcom, solved by the end of the show story.
I find it interesting that Sarah's sexuality did not come up as much, and how she's almost left out of the LGBT storylines in the house. I'm curious as to how she self-identifies, though I would assume ******** since she was very upfront about having previously dated women. If that's the case, just because she's with a man, that doesn't make her any less ******** than if she had been on the show during a period when she was dating a woman, you know what I mean?
And Scott? What does he do? I feel like we hardly got anything on him tonight... actually (and this is kind of mean), throughout the whole episode, I kept thinking "I wonder which one was the replacement..." and I kept coming to either Scott or Baya (even though I adore her so far!). I'm kind of excited to see how this cast progresses throughout the season!
Really, really promising premiere and I think V1 was 100% correct about Brooklyn turning over a new page for Real World.
Well, this whole episode was about Katelynn (i assume the whole season will revolve around her.) and Ryan and Chet, didn't like Ryan as much as i thought i would like, But only first impression. Baya looks way funner then i thought she would be, Devyn shes really wierd in a way for me. Chet, and Ryan are like they say "bromance" and probably the two that will mostly cause conflict in the house. JD he seems alright, But my favorite is Katelynn.
OMG first time in RW history, that by first impression I actually like the whole cast. Wow this truly can be one of the best seasons ever!!!!(let's hope). Everyone seem to have a story and a background. Can't wait for next week :):):)!!!
I just caught it online and and WOW...this is going to be a whole "new" Real World. Seeing the statue of liberty gave me chills.
I really do not want to make any assumptions at this point, but this looks to be a great season.
Ryan might be a "good ole boy" but I love me some good ole boys!

Okay I'm probably going to be one of the only people who hated this season opener.
Too me this season is going to based more on emotions and that may not be a bad thing. However when I watch the Real World I want to be entertained and the only time I was entertained tonight was when Ryan and Chet sang their song.
I will give it a few trys but something just seems iffy about the season.
Baya is my favorite. Didnt see too much about her but I think she will be one the nice girls that people seem to like.
JD seemed much nicer than he did in the trailer especially with the girls. Maybe thats why it looks like he will get in more fights with the guys. But IMO no fights can follow up on the Joey/Greg/Will/Dave drama
Deyvn and Scott are going to be a boring Landon/Shavonda type of couple. Im not going to like Deyvn automatically just because of her color. She's no diva. And Scott will be the wall flower this season.
Sarah wil be the girl everyone hates in the house. Just something Frankie/Melanie about her.
Chet will get really annoying at the end. He is funny to watch but everyone knows he is the type of guy you hate in real life.
Ryan= ****** bag. Plain and simple. Again he may be funny but he is a giant ******. Have fun getting sent home early on a challenge.
Now on to Katelyn this may sound really bad but I think the only reason she was cast was because she IS transgender. Dont get me wrong I think its great and all to represent different people but she is gonna be a character who is shoved down our throats. I myself dont understand the whole transgender thing and thats why they put her on to help us understand. Is she gay or is she straight. If she has a boyfriend does that make her boyfriend gay.. idk just confusing... and yes call be ignorant but a little disgusting. I have NOTHING agaisnt gay people at all and i am excepting about it... but this draws the line for me. Hopefully i am convinced throughout but she makes me not want to watch the season since i know it will mainly be all about her.
First impressions:
Chet--I like him. He's funny, individualistic, a bit naive, but seems like an all around great guy.
Ryan--He's my favorite so far. I think he's the most attractive (physically) in the house. Love his style and his facial expressions. He reminds me of Ace a little bit, actually. I also cringed at the "it" comment, but it didn't make me dislike him.
Katelyn--I think she is going to break every stereotype out there of transgendered people. I predict a lot of personal growth.
Baya--Didn't really interest me too much.
Devyn--She seems nice and fun. One of the things that I noticed is that she doesn't seem to have as strong of a personality as the other African American women that MTV usually has on the Real World...like Coral, Tami, Janelle, Aneesa etc. Almost like MTV was typecasting before. Hope that doesn't sound racist, since I'm speaking purely from a "stereotype" standpoint.
Scott--Didn't see much of him...don't think he's the most attractive male in the house but I LOVE his accent. And so far, without knowing much, he seems cool. Edit: Ryan and Chet's song about him was HILARIOUS!!!!
Sarah--I love her. She's my favorite girl in the house. Someone I can totally hang with. But judging from the previews it looks like she may be in the middle of some drama later.
JD--Seems very cool, intelligent, worldly, open-minded. I like him.

A lesson is political correctness and real life... when you tell us you have "nothing against" a particular culture, you reveal yourself in a rather negative way. You may not intend it, but that is the affect, as you can see from the immediate reactions above. This criticism from me -- and it clearly is intended as criticism -- is in line with how I responded to you earlier today to your first posts at vevmo.
Thus far, you appear to be alone tonight in nearly all your views -- alone at least compare to the general vevmo membership. Maybe you are the one missing things, and on a side note, that are lots of TV channels that entertain. This season is clearly about far more than entertainment.
You know, I felt Katelynn may have been cast for shock value at first. Look at the direction some of MTV's shows are going in. Look at "A Shot at Love" for example. And the other dating shows. And of course people have noticed for years that many of the RW seasons of recent times have been about partying and hooking up. So that's what my first reaction was upon hearing there would be a transgendered person on the show.
However, from the first episode, I don't really get the feeling that Katelynn is supposed to be that kind of wild scandalous type of person. I get the feeling that it's an initial surprise thing, but hopefully the show won't only portray her as "the transgendered person" and we will get to know Katelynn's personality and such.
I wasn't really interested in this season, but decided I should at least watch the first episode. The first episode was OK and I think I may watch the next. It felt like it was over too soon. And we didn't get to really know Scott, Devyn, or Baya since they were barely focused on.
I liked Landon and Shavonda's relationship (though I know some did not), so if Devyn and Scott had something like that, I would probably be interested in watching. But I don't get the Landon/Shavonda vibe from them, at least not right now. We don't even know if Scott is attracted to her yet (or much about him at all). Only similarity between them would be the interracial thing, IMO, so far.
Wow, tell us how you really feel.
Coming from someone who was really worried that my post about Devyn was going to come off as racist, I don't think she meant it like that. But I could be wrong! Oddly enough I'm having a hard time putting into words how I DID take it....but I don't think she was being judgmental.
I also think Mizfit2009 was thinking more about The Real World portraying stereotypes and was going by that in their assessment of the show. If you read the assessments of the other cast members besides Katelynn and Devyn, you can kind of see it. A lot of people who watch the show think that BMP are trying to cast such and such type of person each season, and they try to see if so and so will fall into it.
I forgot to say I really like Sara so far. This is the fourth RW "Sara(h)", by the way, and fifth overall in the RW/RR family counting RR Campus Crawl Sarah, and I have liked all of the ones before, so hopefully she will continue to follow in this trend.
Devyn- so far my favorite from this cast base on the first episode, and her interview on IO on demand (guys if you have iO go to MTV on demand, and watch their interviews).
Katelyn- I like her. Like someone said before she's completely breaking the transgender stereotype. I'm actually a very religious person, and I believe if your born a man, you can be gay, but still act, and look like a man, and right now watching Kate is actually changing my views a little....can it be possible that this real world season actually open my mind???wow
Baya- I think she is probably the cuttest thing this season LOL. I can't wait to see more of her.
Sarah- Something about her reminds me of both Robin/Frankie LOL. I like her.
JD- Seems like a really caring person. Seems like he really wants to get to know his roomates.
Chet- skinny jeans LOL.....he's awesome and funny....everytime he said something I usually laugh LOL
Ryan- just like Chet made me laugh every single time. I have so much respect for him, because my cousin was in Iraq for 4 years, and I understand where he's coming from.
Scott- I'm straight, but everytime he was on my TV I wanted to do some excersies cause I realize I want to be in shape like that LOL. I tought base on pictures he was going to be a typical meat head (cough DUNBAR cough), but he seems like a real down to earth guy. He seems mad cool, remind me of my friends.
I dont want to speak for everyone but normally especially on Speakreallity a "majority" of people who post on forums like these are homosexual and bi. So they can easily understand something like that.
Then you get someone like me who isnt sexiest, racist or homophobic.... so I ask questions but my questions label me as those things, which is unfair. Dont assume that just because I dont understand, im ignorant.
I have never known any transgender people in my life or have hardly even seen them on TV so this story is VERY different to me and weird. It makes no sense whatsoever why they get changes. There sexuality also questions me since they love men.... which makes them gay but at the same time it makes them straight since they are women... no sense what so ever.
