I dont want to speak for everyone but normally especially on Speakreallity a "majority" of people who post on forums like these are homosexual and bi. So they can easily understand something like that. Then you get someone like me who isnt sexiest, racist or homophobic.... so I ask questions but my questions label me as those things, which is unfair. Dont assume that just because I dont understand, im ignorant. I have never known any transgender people in my life or have hardly even seen them on TV so this story is VERY different to me and weird. It makes no sense whatsoever why they get changes. There sexuality also questions me since they love men.... which makes them gay but at the same time it makes them straight since they are women... no sense what so ever.
Mentioning speakreality is not the smartest thing one can do here. There is a history between vevmo and the month old deceased speakreality. Personally, I don't assume you are either ignorant or about to win the Nobel Prize for physics. Your word choices, and the care you take in writing, are all we have to go on. When all of your first post here at vevmo are essentially negative, you stand out as a bit of a downer. Sorry.

I understand where you are coming from MizFit2009, because like I said before I'm a very religious person, and I don't agree with transgenders. I'm good if you are a guy and your gay or bi, but at least act like one, but you have to be an open minded person. Kate actually made me realize just by the first episode transgender people are people. What I mean is that I use to call transgender people "it," I'm not going to bullshit and lie, and say I will never say "it" again, but it's a growing process. MTV put HER, so we can learn about transgenders. They are actually focusing on society issues, and not just drama. Will this season completely change my view on transgender, who knows, but just base on the first episode, you have to have an open mind, and curious on why that person decided to live in that lifestyle.
All I know is that my curiosity about the operation is in overdrive right now. I just read something on the net (not sure if it is appropriate to post) about follow-up care after this surgery (something done several times a day for months) and I'm wondering how on earth she accomplished it while doing the real world.
MizFit, I appreciate your honesty and no one is calling you ignorant. The word comes into play because Ryan referred to himself as being ignorant in this instance. I don't want you to think we are jumping on you because you don't understand or can't relate. Curiosity is a good thing, especially if you truly want to know and learn more so that you can understand. Ignorance is passing judgment without knowledge. If you have an open mind and heart than I have no problems with you. Having said that, I have to agree with V, your posts are negative and don't leave a good first impression. Whether Katelynn was cast for shock value or to break stereo types, I don't know. But I think after speaking with her for 5 minutes they'd have cast her for her not just because she is transgender.
Regardless this season is getting people to talk, which cant be a bad thing.
Guys I feel so stupid for asking this cause I know vevmo has gone over it so many times but I can't find the posts. My bad I apologize but I must ask. When does this season end again exactly?on what date?.......please and thank you......
I forgot to say I really like Sara so far. This is the fourth RW "Sara(h)", by the way, and fifth overall in the RW/RR family counting RR Campus Crawl Sarah, and I have liked all of the ones before, so hopefully she will continue to follow in this trend.
Don't forget Sarah from Road Rules: Latin America ;)
If you missed tonight's episode, here is the replay schedule: Jan 8 at 10 am; 2:30 and 8 pm; Jan 9 at 5:30 pm; Jan 10 at 11 am and 9 pm; Jan 11 at 1 am and 10 pm; Jan 12 at 4 pm; and Jan 14 at 12:30 am and 12 and 9 pm.
Don't forget Sarah from Road Rules: Latin America ;)
Wow, I did forget her. She is one of the more obscure RW/RR people, I feel. But I was just thinking about that cast the other day, so it's a little surprising I forgot about her. So six RW/RR Sara(h)s. She was OK. I can't remember much about her other than her and Holly S. being upset that Gladys had to leave. Mizfit209 has posted before this thread and was actually quite helpful to those of us who wanted to watch Mike in wrestling. I just wanted to say I don't think this poster is trying to be rude so far.
I have to agree with most of the people here, this is the first time I actually like all of the cast members. Katelynn and Chet are my favorites. When JD, Chet, and Ryan were having the conversation on the stairs about Katelynn, my jaw dropped when he called Katelynn "it". I know he said he doesn't really know much about Transgendered people, but still, I was just in shock. PS: First post!
You know, I have to say that everyone is entitled to their opinion. Whether it is politically correct or not. Growing up in South Florida and in this generation and in the family that I did, I have been lucky enough to be exposed to people from all walks of life. I think it's a little sad that without knowing the story behind a person's journey, what someone does to better their life gets labeled as "disgusting". Instead of thanking your lucky stars that who you are is considered by the mainstream "normal" and that you have the freedom to live your life as you please virtually unshunned by the masses and not condemned by the law, you are busy sitting at home turning up your nose to a subject you are ill educated on. I don't want to flame the situation but it is a tough pill to swallow. I apologize if this gets preachy but my first instinct is to fiercely protect the ones I love. I find it crass to assume that all that is interesting about Kate is the operation she had months ago. She is more multifaceted than most people and THAT is why she was chosen to give a face to the transgendered. Really - in Miami you could find any number of gay or transgendered Real world hopefuls that would give their right arm to be on this show but that girl is a force to be reckoned with. She's bright and funny and caring.... she could easily be like a special someone in your life. The difference is that she has a story to tell that could possibly enlighten someone like yourself. Her relationship is almost like any other with hurdles to overcome. Who cares about labels? Love is love no matter who it is with. To answer your question; No, Mike isn't "gay" - her boyfriend fell in love with who Kate has always been on the inside. It's just that who she is now matches outside as well. It's not ignorant to ask questions but what you did instead was come in and say: "So, Baya is hot, I'm kind of bored by all these human emotions, I'm a nice guy though because I don't mind the ***** but I could do without the colored chick and trans-what's that? That makes me sick." That? That makes you ignorant MizFit. FYI, Ryan & Scott are nice guys - Devyn even though I managed not to meet her is a diva with a capital D no matter what you think (I trust Kate's gauge on Diva-ness), Baya is sweet but Sarah has soul & heart. So, either watch and learn or don't and close your mind to encounters with great people because of what they are.
I think what you said is just fine and appropriate and I appreciate you sharing your point of view, especially since you know Kate. She does seem to be sweet and I am really hoping BMP/MTV will show all of the wonderful qualities she is said to have. That goes for everyone in the cast. I prefer when they show the cast members as people who are not one dimensional.
Wow, I did forget her. She is one of the more obscure RW/RR people, I feel. I could continue, but that would be veering pretty far off topic ;)
I prefer when they show the cast members as people who are not one dimensional.
I whole-heartedly agree, and I think a lot of that falls to the casting. The casting for Brooklyn was spot-on, every roommate has many layers of personality to them, many stories to share and I think we're in for a great season!
Why do they refer to themselves as transgenders than? Why do homosexuals refer to themselves as homosexuals? If they are just trying to be like normal people then why do they carry around these names that single them out as "different". It almost seems that fans of the show like Katie because she is a transgender as opposed to likeing her for the real person she is. It may be a hard thing to admit but its probably true that her sex change is a big factor in why people find her interesting.... again sorry if i offended anyone its just something im unfamilar with and hopefully by the end of the season i will be. its still a subject that is very weird... and unless i ever myself become a transgender wont be able to understand
Just from the first episode it seems like the cast will party less. All of the drinking on RW can sometimes be entertaining, but I was glad that this season will be about more than that. I'm sure that Katelyn's story made her stand out in casting, but I don't think it matters why she was cast. She seems like a sweet girl, and I think she will help many people rethink their attitudes on different lifestyles. MizFit - I went to a very small religious school my entire life, so in college I met a ton of new people that I did not understand at first. Someone explained to me that sometimes someone knows that they are a woman, but were born in the wrong body. So the have a surgery to fix the problem, just like any other corrective surgery. Now my opinion is that people should do what they need to do to be happy, as long as no one else is harmed. If Katelyn found a way to be happy then I think we should all be happy for her. I'm not trying to tell you what to think, and I am no expert on the subject, but maybe that will help you understand the situation a little better.

This season is about 8 strangers, not one. It's one episode thus far - nobody can force you to watch but you should always take an opportunity to learn. Before all other things we are human first and it's important to remember and respect that. To anyone who seconded the validity in what I had to share; it's much appreciated.
Chet - He's funny, but to me it seems like he'll be the diva in the house. Ryan - Seems the most real to me...whether thats good or bad, i've yet to decide. Sarah - Barely got any screentime for me to make a judgement Baya - Same as Sarah, seems really excited to be on the show Devyn - Didn't get much screentime either. She's attractive though Scott- Actually seems pretty nice...I thought he'd be like a Danny (austin) JD - my favorite so far...seems like a nice guy Katelynn - I hope the storylines don't only focus on her being transgendered. While it is interesting and new for the real world, i just hope there's more. Overall good episode

What really made me have an open mind and curious about Kate is really her personality. It's like she was born a girl, but kind of a tomboy. To be honest with you, I even forgot in some parts of the episode she was transgender, for example when she was with her boyfriend. I complete started asking my brother if we read the spoilers wrong cause she could pass as a "geeky girl," just like she stated. Mizfit you ask if anyone liked her base on personality, and so far I do. When I read spoilers I tought Kate was going to be the typical, stereotype transgender, but she actually behaves like a female, and can even pass as a female. She actually made me think that maybe some people where just born gay, bi, or wanting to be the opposite sex, and it's not something they choose.
I think JonLu was inquiring as to when the last episode will air (which I have also forgotten!)
I wasn't responding to anyone, but providing general info for readers who had not yet seen the show (hence, not quoting anyone), and would not, as a result of the length of the thread, know to find that info at the top of the thread. :)
I apologize if this gets preachy but my first instinct is to fiercely protect the ones I love.
"Ones I love" Do you know Kateklynn or did you simply "meet her?"
First Post!! I must admit, I really have not been keeping up with the past few seasons of the Real World. They became too much about partying and not enough about the cast members stories. I love learning about what has made a person who they are. When I heard they were doing a revamp for the new season I was really excited, and the first episode didn't disappoint! I do wish some had gotten more airtime. Scott - I have got to love a fellow New Hampshire-ite! There have been enough people to represent Boston in the past, some good, some not, and so far I am glad that Scott seems like he will be more than the token meat head Baya - She seems really fun and excited to be there. I don't know much about her, so I will wait until she tells us her story Katelynn - seems down to earth with a good head on her shoulders, and a great example that lgbt people are just that, people like you and me. I can't imagine going to the Real World, what 2 months? after surgery! That is just crazy! Ryan - I appreciate that he is willing to speak his mind and lay it all out there. It seemed like he was really wanting to know more instead of immeadiately passing a final judgement on his housemates, as he was afraid they would do on him as "the military guy". Do we know how long he has been back from Iraq? I missed that last night if he said it. Chet - Seriously, those jeans! How did he get in to them? I need to know his secret ;) It seemed like he was "looking" for drama a little too much last night, but that could have been the editing. Brooklyn is definitely different than Salt Lake City and I would love to see him grow as he is exposed to different things everyday. Devyn - I feel like the only thing I know about her is that she did pageants and that she thinks Scott is hot, so not much at all! Haha. She seems like someone I will like, so I am excited to learn more. Sarah - A cool girl, someone I would want to hang out with. I was also wondering why she wasn't included in the LGBT discussions? I am excited to see what she does with her art and to hear more about her. JD - He seemed more quiet and reserved. I liked hearing his story when he was talking to Katelynn, but something seems a little off, like he is holding more back or something... All in all, a great ep. I wanted to know more about every cast member, and for the first time in a long time, I am excited for a season of RW!!
Is it me or does this cast and season seem extremely dull? If the only drama they can show is JD smashing a table- than that doesn't seem like such an enjoyable season. I think they could have done a much better casting job. Kate is the only intriguing one and thats because she has a strong back-story that hasn't been shown before. But besides that, as a person, she seems pretty low key. And Ryan, am I the only one to find him extremely annoying and ignorant? We get it, he's curious about Katelynn, writes and plays the guitar. How about Chet? Chet if you think you aren't gay, then you are in for a rude awakening. Your dress and curious questioning only raise more suspision. I am not saying he is gay, but I can understand why everyone thinks he is. He was totally digging Ryan. In the aftershow he was trying really hard not to show affection (But I heard when the tapes were off... it seemed he had a thing for Ryan). The other cast wasn't in it so much. I thought I would really enjoy Baya, but for some reason Sarah seems to peek my interest this season.

It's refreshing to have cast members who can have intellectual discussions about issues other than hooking up and how much of a drunken mess someone was. In my opinion, that hardly qualifies any of them as being dull.
I think mizfit needs to go over to twop if he is going to post like this.
Agreed!
Is it me or does this cast and season seem extremely dull?
If the only drama they can show is JD smashing a table- than that doesn't seem like such an enjoyable season.
Some of us are tired of seeing nothing but that sort of mindless entertainment. Maybe you would be more comfortable watching a continuously looped rerun of the RW: Las Vegas hot tub threesome?
I think they could have done a much better casting job. I believe this is them most interesting cast I've ever seen BMP put together. I'm normally very critical of nearly everything BMP does, but I can't be critical of their casting results this year. You have chosen to condemn the book solely on its cover (Episode 1). I won't say that is unfair, because you are entitled to your opinion; however, I will tell you that I find your reaction about equal to your description of Ryan. -Katelynn will emerge as so much more that her backstory. You should give her and BMP a little credit for not being that shallow. -Ryan is the product of his life experience at this point in the show. He grows throughout the season. As I wrote last night, one of the cast said we should wait for the resolution of conflict before taking sides. "All's Well that Ends Well," to borrow from Mr. Shakespeare. -Chet -- You "heard" something when the tapes were off? Really. How about some evidence of that please. It sounds it little like you are mimicking Chet's gossipy nature. - Sarah and Baya: You will get lots of both in future episodes. Not to worry.
Well just because people are well rounded, it doesnt make them exciting and refreshing. The only intellectual conversations they had dealt with Iraq and Kate. But besides that they were mostly going behind her back and trying to figure out if she was a guy? Doesn't seem so well rounded or intellecutal to me, but that is my opinion. You can be an intellectual and dull. You barely saw Scott, Devyn, Baya, Sarah and JD. I'm not saying they should have gone out and party, drink and have sex, I am not about that, I am just about people being new and refreshing and fun. It just seemed a little boring to me.
