Stage 20: Home of The Real World Hollywood
So I just got done looking through the pics that are on Mtv.com of the new house... I think it's a neat design concept and I like the colors in the house, but overall I find it to be pretty tacky. I'm tired of having the host-city's name on the house (see: Austin, Denver, Sydney). And speaking of, the houses lately have just been warehouses that have had random room spaces installed. I see how this can be beneficial from a production standpoint, but I liked the show better when they were living in actual lofts/houses/house-like buildings (see: London, New Orleans, Boston, Paris, Key West). Anyone else seen the pics?
I agree that it seems a bit stale (as any repurposed "industrial" space would feel.) It almost echoes a "Big Brother" type of house with the large rooms and caged in pool (a large Hollywood sound stage with a couches and beds.) Yes, I get that this season is The Real World Hollywood and thus the movie studio look plays into the theme, but still I suspect that we have moved too far away from an actual house and will be lacking a certain sense of intimacy. Sydney was the same type of massive facility, and look where that got us. From Wikipedia:
This season the cast is housed in the Columbia Square Building, a seven-story, 105,000 square foot building at 6121 West Sunset Boulevard at the intersection of North Gower Street in Gower Gulch that formerly served as a CBS broadcast facility. The building is part of a 125,000 foot complex that takes up an entire city block, which previously housed eight studios and two radio stations, KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV. The complex also included a 1,050 seat auditorium, a restaurant, and a bank. The northeast corner of the complex was used for filming. It is is 23.3 miles from the Venice beach house where The Real World: Los Angeles was filmed. The property was purchased in August 2006 for $66 million USD by Molasky Pacific, LLC, who intend to redevelop it to attract other residential and office tenants.
I remember reading somewhere that like the first rock of love house was a former Top Model house. I think its kind of funny that a lot of times they just redo these used up reality houses for different shows.
awkward. does have a BB feel

That's exactly what I was going for, I just didn't know how to verbalize it... the industrial house feel takes away the 'real', intimate feeling of the show... think of some of the houses that were actual houses, like New Orleans, London, or Boston- those houses were really comfortable and really got a sense of "home" across. The warehouses really lack in that department, and take away the sense of "family" that earlier casts had. Edited to add: Back in the day, I made a 'Real World' house in The Sims that was pretty much entirely "outdoors inside" kind of like this house is, and I remember thinking how tacky it would be to actually have a house like that, haha... and speaking of tacky: Mugshots of Nicole Richie, Mel Gibson, Lindsay Lohan, et all? Seriously? Seriously? ...wow.
I remember when they gutted the old firehouse for The Real World Boston. There was a lot of concern in the community about having the filming take place in a quiet (and posh) residential community. People were not happy, but it was promised that after filming the restored building would be left in an improved state. I miss when they used to put a lot of thought into the houses, trying to give them distinct feelings, yet not over the top. I think the downward slope started with Philadelphia's house, but really kicked it into high gear with Austin's neon pink warehouse.

I liked the Boston, New Orleans, and Hawaii houses. Even the Chicago loft was pretty cool. Just another old school trend that we will lose now. :(
I agree...why does everything have to change for the worse
Oh man really?? I couldn't disagree more, I thought Boston was a great season!
I liked it too. Of course I am biased as I lived in Boston (about a mile from the fire house) when they filmed it and enjoyed seeing familiar sites as the story was told.
I have to agree with those of you who liked Boston - it is actually my favorite season, all these years later. :)
