IMO, the casting calls are kinda whack....i went to one a few years back and there was a black gay dude in my bunch.....the rest of us never stood a chance. he was all toting "i think thinking about someone else is cheating."
I probably shouldve told him he was a retard, and then I probably would've had a shot haha
but yeah....the casting calls are eh....you wait for so long and you have to fight over people.......my experience wasn't good with it
Hey I'm just curious if anyone knows how many rounds there are total?
I also made it to round 2 and filled out the application and a week later I got a call from a casting director (is that anything special?). I felt as though I did pretty well with the interview, but they haven't gotten back to me for almost 2 weeks. Should I be worried that they dropped me and I didn't make it to the next round? And what is the next round and what should I expect?

Congrats and good luck, I am thinking since they are still doing other castings that maybe they put all round 2 people on hold to see if there are any more potentials out there to throw in the bunch, but I am just guessing so don't quote me. Perhaps our good friend V1man knows the answer.
Got some questions for those who have been to an open casting call.
1. What time should I get there?? Should I be there early before they open the doors at 10 or could I show up at 2 and still get at a table in time?
2. If I go with friends, will we be seperated because we know one another?
3. What stands out in a group of 10?
Thats it for now. Thanks guys

Round 1: VIDEO
Round 2: Call Back/Application
Round 3: Interview with Casting Director
Round 4: Recorded interview via phone/camera or phone/skype
I'm at round 4. The whole process has taken about two months. After round 3 (the phone interview), she told me immediately that she was passing my application through to the next round. I waited a week, and then got a call to set up the interview through skype. She told me that very few people make it this far, so fingers crossed :-X

my friend and i are really good at making casting tapes (we get called back everytime we make one) and filling out the applications. we tried out for the show 3 times and have made it past the application part all 3 times and have gone REAL far for 2 of the seasons. we were actually thinking about setting up a service where we help people make their tapes and fill out the application.

If you haven't made it, then what would be the point? lol.
well wise *** i'll explain. most people can't even get to the application round let alone the interview part. what if you could help someone make a great tape, which most people are clueless about doing anyways and get them going in the right direction? if after the tape and app help they are still no good for the show then so be it. you're pretty much on your own anyway once the interviewing starts.

1) they are all crowded, some more than others depending on where you live. getting there early is good, but you can get there late too and still be able to talk to a casting person.
2) the friends thing i don't know about, but i thought i remember someone saying that they sat at a table with their friend. they got an app and their friend did not.
3) just be yourself, being outspoken will help. speak your mind and if and when you disagree with someone let them know why. making fun of things and just be natural. it is not hard to stand out in a group of 10. probably like 6 or 7 kids will just answer to questions the casting person asks and not saying anything else. go out of your way to throw in your 2 cents.
there is no "step by step" to get to the final interview, and helping somebody "make their video/application more appealing" is nonsense as well. the casting directors (several of them analyze you after a certain point) are looking for consistency as well as reality. they want somebody who is real to who they are, and who has a strong personality.. if you can't make the video/fill out the application yourself, you shouldn't waste your time at all.

agree to disagree. you can be a great person for the show, but just have a "yawn" of a tape and app.
i do agree that there is no step by step guide to getting cast, never said there was and being as real is possible is the whole point of the show, but you have to be interesting too.

I'm kinda with da on this one.....i've had MULTIPLE people (20ish?) tell me that they think i'd rock on the show, but I've yet to make a 5 minute video that is appealing. There's SO MUCH to me (hahahah im one pretentious, narcisitic ******* apparently. I also don't know how to spell "narcisistic") that i struggle to create a 5 minute video that is decent. I wish I could just get a friggin interview and i'd be happy
You can be solid for the show, but just unsure of how to put your "best foot forward". that's how i am and feel about it.

Agreed. It is the same with any interview process for a highly competitive position. You need to be able to get by the secretary to even see the guy that does the hiring. I am willing to bet (with the massive volume of tapes sent) that there are intern level reviewers that shoot through hundreds of tapes a day and if yours does not stand out for one reason or another, it does not make it to the decision makers.
Having a good interview tape is just like having a good resume. You might be the most qualified for a given job, but if your resume doesn't properly encapsulate your talents- the employer will never know that fact and you probably will not get the job.
I came across this forum looking for other people who have advanced as well in the casting process for season 21. I went to a casting call a few weeks ago, in my group of 10 I was the only one asked to wait around after that round and go upstairs and fill out another 16 page application. I turned that in and the casting director said if they were interested they would call me by 9. We'll she called and setup a time for me to have a taped interview the next day with her at a hotel, with instructions not to wear patterns, stripes, name brands or black or white. My interview took up the full amount of tape 90 mins. and afterwards she said that if they were interested they would call within a month. So right now I figure I'm in round 3 waiting to continue on to round 4, and my theory is that what Bunim-Murray does after the final casting call which was last week, is go through everyone that had a taped interview and decide from that pool of applicants which should advance to round 4. According to Damon Furberg (one of the head casting directors), from the 16-19 city casting call tour,15-30 people per city advance to the taped interview round. So from the 10,ooo's that applied for the show so far, the pool of people still in the running is probably around 500 included those who did not go to casting calls and submitted a tape. So probably within the next 3 weeks or so people will begin to be notified if they've advanced. And according to Davis Mallory interview with associated content ( Interview with Davis Mallory from MTV's the Real World, Denver - Associated Content )
a month after he went to a casting call they called and asked him to make a home tape and told him to go to Atlanta another hour and a half interview this time being followed by a 5 min confessional, and lasty being flown to LA for a weekend of interviews. One thing I think people should keep in mind is the casting process is different for each person, based on whether you sent a tape in or went to a casting call, whether you live near a major city in a central location (Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Atlanta) where casting directors would be able to fly in and interview you and other people who've advanced in person, instead of more rural areas where you would be more inclined to have a skype or videotaped phone interview, whether your videotaped interview displayed enough of your personality or you were asked to make a home tape directly after your interview. I also doubt seriously any casting director tells the person that they've interviewed that they've made it to the next round as soon as they've finsished a taped interview because basically that decision is not up to only one person, but to the whole team of casting directors who sit and debate and decide who exactly should advance. Just my thoughts on casting.

Awesome! Comprehensive and complete answer, basically summing up everything I had thought, as well. Congratulations, and good luck!
Thanks.
Now Im Completely Intimidated About This Process Lol

having an interesting life helps a lot. personality is most of it though. you have to fit one of the personalities they are looking for that season.

...and if rumors are true about a Washington DC season (which would seem to make sense) then they are probably looking for political types with strong opinions on issues affecting young Americans today.
Ok....I made that all up (except the DC part.) Actually they are looking for "loose" alcoholics that have no issues with cheating and can count to 10 on a good day. ;)

Good post!
and LOL, Bacchus. Political types? Pfft! Drinkers? Yup.
why is the application 16 pages?
The application is pretty long/intense. They use it to base their future interviews off of, which are always pretty specific to what you wrote.

Can you share a few of the off beat type questions?
