Dexter Premieres on CBS Tonight
CBS Welcomes Dexter Tonight Tonight, Showtime's critically-acclaimed drama Dexter is premiering on network television. The series' 12-episode first season will be shown on Showtime's sister channel, CBS, making it the first premium cable drama to make the transition. The broadcasts will give viewers who don't have access to Showtime the opportunity to watch the hit drama about a blood spatter analyst/serial killer on the small screen, while avid fans can relive the show's entire debut season. Debuting on network television entails certain consequences, particularly of the editing kind. In order to fit the more conservative standards of free TV, Dexter has been edited, so viewers can expect to see less of the gore that cable subscribers have been treated to. Dexter, which is based on Jeff Lindsay's novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter, has done well for Showtime, earning strong ratings, a loyal fan base and high critical praise. Show star Michael C. Hall, has been nominated twice in the lead actor category at both the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. He has also won a TCA Award for Individual Achievement in Drama for his work on the show. While Dexter has become a hit among viewers and critics, one watchdog group has expressed concern over the airing of the show on CBS. The Parents Television Council, a non-partisan non-profit organization, formally asked the network late last month to do away with its plans to air the show. In a press release, the PTC, which has also gone after other shows like Nip/TuckJoan of Arcadia, described Dexter as a “graphically violent show about a hero who is a serial killer." The PTC's description completely contrasts CBS' entertainment president Nina Tassler's sentiments on the show. “Dexter is a high-quality, compelling series that will be new and original programming for most CBS viewers,” Tassler said in a statement. “It's also a great match with our existing line-up, affording us the opportunity to promote this critically decorated series in CBS' top-rated crime dramas.” Dexter will fill CBS' 10pm Sunday night timeslot for 12 consecutive weeks. I thought CBS did a good job with the edit. There were no major plot points removed although I counted about 10 different instances of frames being cropped out (death scenes, sex scenes etc) lots of "rephrasing" (just about every time Debra opens her mouth it is "***k") and the opening sequence was removed in favor of just a title with credits running as the show began. Opening Sequence Also, the commercials seemed to come at inopportune times, but they always do, right? I still think they only way you are going to get the true Dexter experience is on DVD (or Showtime) but it is still entertaining and worth the watch on network television.
I could see this coming from a mile away. I think that there is a call to boycott just about every show on television these days. All bark and no bite. Not sure why I am even posting this...
PTC Asks Advertisers to Boycott Dexter The Parents Television Council is calling on the advertisers on the CBS drama Dexter to boycott the show because of its violent nature and asking all CBS affiliates to preempt the show. The main character in the show works for the police as a blood spatter expert, who has channeled his desire to kill by secretly targeting only criminals. The show was originally produced for Showtime, like CBS television network, part of CBS Corporation. However, Showtime is a pay cable network. CBS has edited the show for free broadcast to take out the most violent parts. The PTC does not feel CBS has edited the show enough. “Despite countless public calls for restraint and corporate responsibility, CBS broke its own promise to the public that it would employ careful editing and accurate ratings guidelines for Dexter,” said PTC president Tim Winter. “Depictions of violence were barely altered from the Showtime network original format.” Winter also derided CBS for not labeling the show for mature audiences only. “If, as CBS repeatedly promised, the program were targeted only to mature audiences, why wouldn’t they assign a mature audience rating of TV-MA?,” Winter said. “What could possibly lead them to determine that a show about a pathological serial killer hero could be appropriate for 14-year-old children?” Winter called on CBS affiliates to preempt the show. “We urge the affiliates to exercise their power to do so,” he said. Among the advertisers who ran ads in the first episode to air on CBS were Capital One, Macy’s, Pfizer and Burger King, along with assorted movie studios. CBS had no comment or response to the PTC's most recent complaints about the show, but issued a statement earlier in response to previous PTC concerns which read: "Dexter is an award-winning, critically acclaimed series for Showtime that will be edited for CBS in the same fashion that feature films, for many years, have been presented on broadcast television. The telecast of Dexter will comply with all network television standards, be edited with respect for artistic integrity, and scheduled responsibly in the last hour of prime time. As always, with broadcasts containing mature content, television audiences will be well informed with an appropriate V-Chip rating and parental advisories in advance and during the broadcast." Helloooooooo? Parents out there, are you home? Any good parent, has their kid in bed by 10pm, especially on a Sunday night. And I mean "kid" under 12. And.... if you are good parent you would have your parental control blocks on shows based rating. Who are these people to tell me, an adult, that I can't watch this show on CBS because of the children. I'm a good mom I wouldn't let my kid watch this show, doesn't mean that I can't watch it. It all comes down to parenting, these bozo's need to mind their own and let others decided what is and what is not appropriate for their own children.

In this day and age with the technology available to parents it just takes a couple of clicks to set the V-Chip up and block everything and anything they want. There is a 1960's mentality when it comes to network television. It is not like kids can't find nudity, violence and inappropriate language on the other 200 cable channels 24 hours a day seven days a week if the parent is asleep at the wheel. For a 10 PM show, Dexter did not even push the boundaries of other fare that appears across the viewing landscape. On a funny side note, as a youngster when ratings were first becoming a thing, I would plan my television viewing based on the rating. The more sexual content and violence warned against, the more I wanted to watch....lol.
Dexter bombed'
It may have seemed like a reasonable stop-gap measure, back during the strike when it was clear the networks would be short of fresh shows at midseason. But importing cable programs to fill holes in their schedules has not worked out all that well. The premiere of CBS’s “Dexter” Sunday night at 10 p.m. averaged a mere 2.3 adults 18-49 rating, despite loads of pre-debut publicity over the acclaimed but violent Showtime series’ reworking for broadcast. Via Media Life
The network better dust off another reality show.
Dexter bombed' The network better dust off another reality show.
It still beat out Big Brother, so I don't think another recycled reality show is the answer!
Sunday: CBS – Dexter (debut on CBS) Viewers: 8.30 million (#3), A18-49: 2.3/ 6 (#3) CBS – Big Brother 9 Viewers: 7.16 million (#4), A18-49: 2.3/ 6 (#4)

It still beat out Big Brother, so I don't think another recycled reality show is the answer!
Well, if they picked up one of ours, it wouldn't be recycled... :D I dusted off a few of them during the past three days in LA.
Well, if they picked up one of ours, it wouldn't be recycled... :D I dusted off a few of them during the past three days in LA.
Are you pitching The Hills meets Real World Cast Clash? I know that show would definitely create some buzz! I guess the problem would be that the Real Worlders get fed MTV financial table scraps while The Hills cast members are demanding a good chunk of cash these days.
Watched the second episode last night. Very disturbing. But in a good way... in that I like the show. But knowing that his father literally trained him to go after bad guys and taught him how to cover his tracks, is very disturbing because Dexter was just a kid at the time. And his thoughts are very disturbing as well. He truly is a sociopath, you sometimes forget that. Why doesn't he like sex? Is it sex or just human emotion? Then why have a girlfriend if he is incapable of feeling anything? He obviously has emotions towards his father and sister, even though they are not his blood. I guess you aren't supposed to understand the mind of a sociopath, are you? LOL
You bring up some good points Kath, and it all gets explained eventually. There is an explicit VERY DISTURBING reason why Dex's dad is training him which will be revealed a few weeks. I am not sure how they are going to do this part of the story on CBS, but I guess we will see! The reason he has a girlfriend is: 1. It makes him seem normal. He needs to blend in. Most serial killers are single white males in their thirties (....er...like me?) Part of his training was to act normal and as we learned from episode 1 everyone thinks he is a great normal guy, except Doakes. 2. He doesn't feel he is capable of feeling emotion (because of what will be revealed) but the truth is there are bits and pieces that actually seep through and you will see more of this as he evolves as a character. The cool yet very strange part is as the series progresses you are going to end up wanting him to get away with murder and get really nervous if he is in danger of getting caught! Katie would refuse to watch and make me tell her if Dexter was safe in a given episode before she would actually view it, lol. That is the genius of Dexter and I promise you it is going to get really good, very soon! The ice truck killer is a bad, bad, bad man and the "twists" will leave you breathless! I am watching with you from the beginning so if you have any questions or think you missed something just ask. This show is definitely worth watching twice even if you know what is going to happen!
This MadTV parody of the Sopranos made me think of the CBS edit of Dexter. Just about every other word out of Debra's mouth is an expletive (and Doakes too) but instead of beeping it they make them say really stupid things like, "BULL STUFF!"
I love Dexter, but I can imagine that it may suck on network tv. Kath do they have netflix in Canada? That is how my cousin watched season one and he was hooked. It is just such a compelling show that sucks you in. And Baccus is right, you get very protective of keeping Dex from getting caught, and he becomes kind of your 'anti hero'. Kathleen, I know you pop in on various threads of shows that you don't want such as Real World. I just hope you didn't read too much of our chat about Dexter otherwise the whole storyline is completely spoiled for you!
I love Dexter, but I can imagine that it may suck on network tv.
It is actually not too bad and I am enjoying watching it again from the beginning. Five years ago it would have sucked, but these days they show just about anything on network television after ten o'clock. Oh how the standards have changed in such a short time. The only thing that annoys me is the "replacement word" swearing, but it is something I can deal with as I know what they are really saying... However, I doubt they will show season two. Especially with Lila's need to be naked while doing her dialog most of the time. :D
Kathleen, did you notice Owen on Dexter (Sunday?) I didn't know him as October Road Owen when I first saw that episode. It was definitely a funnier scene (no, not the limb chopping part - but the hospital bed flirting scene) this time around because of my mental association with the ABC shows version of the clunky dork. BTW: Isn't this the most humrours serial killer program you have ever watched? Dexter's choice of a "light movie" and then his timing with "oral gratification" was a bit off this week and had me literally on the floor laughing (and this was the second time I watched it!) ZOMG! Next week. Next week gets really good. The fit starts hitting the shan!
I caught that it was Owen. What bugs me and I keep meaning to go to IMDB to find out but Dexter's girlfriend...what the heck was she on? I know it was something that I watched all the time and it's bugging me. I laughed at the movie...WTF, that's light? LOL I also liked the scene with the couple at the end when Dexter can see that they have feelings for each other and he wants to know how.

Julie Benz She plays the innocent part well on Dexter, but innocent she is not!
I also liked the scene with the couple at the end when Dexter can see that they have feelings for each other and he wants to know how.
I was going to mention that too! He is about to do them in, but gets all serious and focused in asking them important relationship questions lol! Poor awkward Dex.
OMG don't let Rock see, I'm going to lose my Buffy cred. ****it I knew it was Darla! I was just testing you. ;)
I am pissed. I recored Dexter last night and it cut off half way through. I did not account for the Basketball game overage.....blah! I hate CBS! I HATE THEM! ...and television executives wonder why people go online and pirate their content.
How many seasons of Dexter is there? Just 2? and is season 2 done playing? why isn't it out on DVD yet???? I want to see the first season over unedited, I'm thinking of getting the DVDs. Last night's episode was like a turning point in the plot. Now it's getting deep. Like everything up to this point has been a prelude or introduction to the cast and characters. I think Dex's girlfriend is going to buy into her ex's BS hook line and sinker, stupid idiot!

I ended up going here to catch what I missed of episode 7 and it is so addictive at this point in the series I actually started episode 8! You are right about the plot. It all was a preface to some serious mind blowing shit that is going to go down in the next 5 episodes. ....and as hard to believe as it may sound (after you see all of season 1) is the fact that season 2 is better! :D
I loved them both, I can't decide if season 2 was better. I thought the ice truck killer storyline was AWESOME.
I loved them both, I can't decide if season 2 was better. I thought the ice truck killer storyline was AWESOME.
We will have to wait until Kathleen catches up to discuss further. I will say that season 1 rocked the house, but season 2 was much scarier for Dexter. ;)
I know I was editing myself so as not to spoil anything. ;) I know my cousin watched both seasons on dvd, I will myspace him and ask him where he got them for ya Kath.
I want to see the first season over unedited, I'm thinking of getting the DVDs.
I just watched episode 8 and it is a game changer. Up until this point there were not really any "cliffhangers" that went from one episode to the next. From 8 onward almost every show ends with a, " OMG WTF!!!" ;) I am guessing at least 15 minutes will have to be cut out of it for CBS (sex scenes, naked dead bodies and gore.) If you are feeling Dexter then I think I'd recommend stopping with CBS at this point and get the Season 1 DVD set. CBS does a great job of getting it to meet standards, but there is a grittiness to the original that seems to be missing that I totally got back from watching the unedited version.
Okay I'll be running to the video store and renting them this weekend for a Dexter marathon. :D And don't you torrent me! I'm not going there again! Takes too freakin' long! ;)
I talked to my cuz and he said he watched season 2 on mininova ....... may not be entirely legal though.
Thanks Katie, I'm going to check the video store for season 1. And that will have to do for the time being.
Did you veg out and watch a Dexter Marathon this weekend Kath?
I completely forgot. I didn't have a WTF moment. I had a gut feeling at the beginning and I knew. He just has that creepy freakish vibe. ya know?
I completely forgot. I didn't have a WTF moment. I had a gut feeling at the beginning and I knew. So you watched a marathon or are you just commenting on last week's episode?
