Dexter Premieres on CBS Tonight

I thought CBS did a good job with the edit. There were no major plot points removed although I counted about 10 different instances of frames being cropped out (death scenes, sex scenes etc) lots of "rephrasing" (just about every time Debra opens her mouth it is "***k") and the opening sequence was removed in favor of just a title with credits running as the show began. I still think they only way you are going to get the true Dexter experience is on DVD (or Showtime) but it is still entertaining and worth the watch on network television.

I could see this coming from a mile away. I think that there is a call to boycott just about every show on television these days. All bark and no bite. Not sure why I am even posting this... Among the advertisers who ran ads in the first episode to air on CBS were Capital One, Macy’s, Pfizer and Burger King, along with assorted movie studios. CBS had no comment or response to the PTC's most recent complaints about the show, but issued a statement earlier in response to previous PTC concerns which read: "Dexter is an award-winning, critically acclaimed series for Showtime that will be edited for CBS in the same fashion that feature films, for many years, have been presented on broadcast television. The telecast of Dexter will comply with all network television standards, be edited with respect for artistic integrity, and scheduled responsibly in the last hour of prime time. As always, with broadcasts containing mature content, television audiences will be well informed with an appropriate V-Chip rating and parental advisories in advance and during the broadcast." In this day and age with the technology available to parents it just takes a couple of clicks to set the V-Chip up and block everything and anything they want. There is a 1960's mentality when it comes to network television. It is not like kids can't find nudity, violence and inappropriate language on the other 200 cable channels 24 hours a day seven days a week if the parent is asleep at the wheel. For a 10 PM show, Dexter did not even push the boundaries of other fare that appears across the viewing landscape. On a funny side note, as a youngster when ratings were first becoming a thing, I would plan my television viewing based on the rating. The more sexual content and violence warned against, the more I wanted to watch....lol.

You bring up some good points Kath, and it all gets explained eventually. There is an explicit [B]VERY DISTURBING[/B] reason why Dex's dad is training him which will be revealed a few weeks. I am not sure how they are going to do this part of the story on CBS, but I guess we will see! The reason he has a girlfriend is: [B] 1.[/B] It makes him seem normal. He needs to blend in. Most serial killers are single white males in their thirties (....er...like me?) Part of his training was to act normal and as we learned from episode 1 everyone thinks he is a great normal guy, [I]except[/I] Doakes. [B] 2.[/B] He doesn't feel he is capable of feeling emotion (because of what will be revealed) but the truth is there are bits and pieces that actually seep through and you will see more of this as he evolves as a character. The cool yet very strange part is as the series progresses you are going to end up wanting him to get away with murder and get really nervous if he is in danger of getting caught! Katie would refuse to watch and make me tell her if Dexter was safe in a given episode before she would actually view it, lol. That is the genius of Dexter and I promise you it is going to get really good, very soon! The ice truck killer is a bad, bad, bad man and the "twists" will leave you breathless! I am watching with you from the beginning so if you have any questions or think you missed something just ask. This show is definitely worth watching twice even if you know what is going to happen! This MadTV parody of the Sopranos made me think of the CBS edit of Dexter. Just about every other word out of Debra's mouth is an expletive (and Doakes too) but instead of beeping it they make them say really stupid things like, "BULL STUFF!" [center][/center]

Five years ago it would have sucked, but these days they show just about anything on network television after ten o'clock. Oh how the standards have changed in such a short time. The only thing that annoys me is the "replacement word" swearing, but it is something I can deal with as I know what they are really saying... However, I doubt they will show season two. Especially with Lila's need to be naked while doing her dialog most of the time. :D

Kathleen, did you notice Owen on Dexter (Sunday?) I didn't know him as October Road Owen when I first saw that episode. It was definitely a funnier scene (no, not the limb chopping part - but the hospital bed flirting scene) this time around because of my mental association with the ABC shows version of the clunky dork. [B]BTW: [/B]Isn't this the most humrours serial killer program you have ever watched? Dexter's choice of a "light movie" and then his timing with "oral gratification" was a bit off this week and had me literally on the floor laughing (and this was the second time I watched it!) ZOMG! Next week. Next week gets [I]really[/I] good. The fit starts hitting the shan!

I am pissed. I recored Dexter last night and it cut off half way through. I did not account for the Basketball game overage.....blah! I hate CBS! I HATE THEM! ...and television executives wonder why people go online and pirate their content.

You are right about the plot. It all was a preface to some serious mind blowing shit that is going to go down in the next 5 episodes. ....and as hard to believe as it may sound (after you see all of season 1) is the fact that season 2 is better! :D

Up until this point there were not really any "cliffhangers" that went from one episode to the next. From 8 onward almost every show ends with a, " OMG WTF!!!" ;) I am guessing at least 15 minutes will have to be cut out of it for CBS (sex scenes, naked dead bodies and gore.) If you are feeling Dexter then I think I'd recommend stopping with CBS at this point and get the Season 1 DVD set. CBS does a great job of getting it to meet standards, but there is a grittiness to the original that seems to be missing that I totally got back from watching the unedited version.

Did you veg out and watch a Dexter Marathon this weekend Kath?
