I immagine they keep the replacements until an elimination or two into the season... then the producers can decide if they want to bring back a freshly eliminated cast memeber or allow the show to continue a man down. You can't bring in a fresh face into a competition after a month and several eliminations it just wouldnt be fair, but it is common in reality TV to bring back the last eliminated person to replace someone who drops.
