I will blame production though for casting her on the season. We didn't get any eliminations or real displays of her athletic ability....basically we didn't get any of the potential benefits from her being on the cast.

Makes sense, Darrell is probably the least connected and most threatening (final wise) out of every guy with a skull. Maybe Cory volunteered for the vote since he had to go in and then whoever won the daily saw it was speed based and figured they might as well take a shot at Darrell. Worst case scenario he beats Cory, gets pissed at whoever sent him in and probably ends up winning the final, which isn't much worse than leaving him to cruise to the final and basically letting him win.
