as a gay man who has had to endure Ryan more often than I would like, there are one or two instances where no representation is the lesser of two evils 

I don't agree with that at all. Overall diversity on screen outweighs the possibility of having one or two duds. But they could just cast better in general. I'm sure there are plenty of entertaining Asian people that are a good fit for reality tv if they actually put in the effort to cast well.
