Scripted Television: Generic Thread

I've been burned so many times in recent years with shows I got into being cancelled that I'm much more tentative to jump into a new series these days. The two network shows I started watching this fall (Pan Am and Terra Nova) were both cancelled.

I was so upset that the Sarah Michelle Gellar show, Ringer, was cancelled. I was really enjoying it. And I'm still pissed that Glee is moving to Thursdays because I already watch way too many shows on Thursdays.

I am sooooooooo disappointed that awake was cancelled. It was such a great show that was so thought provoking. Meanwhile, garbage like Bob's Burger is still on. Why God, why?!

Why God, why?![/QUOTE] Agreed. Awake is really the only one I am sad about after looking over that list. The others I've either never heard of/forgotten about or had no interest in to start with.

Words cannot express the rage I feel about Community only getting picked up for 13 episodes but they decided to renew Whitney for a full season? Or even at all? Blah! And as much as I love The Office (or at least did in it's prime), I think it's time to pull the plug. Very happy for Parks and Rec and Happy Endings though! I was nervous the latter wouldn't get picked up. I'm also looking forward to Mindy Kaling's new show because she's hilarious.

That list and this thread remind me how few network shows I watch. I haven't even heard of most of the ones you guys are discussing. Blue Blood, Big Bang, and Glee are about the only ones I watch though Glee is hit or miss and Big Bang I usually watch on cable reruns. I thought they had cancelled Grey's Anatomy like two years ago LOL.

Going into fall 2012 I will only have a few scripted network shows left: The Good Wife. How I Met Your Mother. Grey's Anatomy. That's it. In my opinion, the big 4 networks have stopped offering new stuff. Every fall we get the show that is trying to be Lost (but isn't.) The rebooted 70's show (that sucked then and sucks now.) The procedural which follows the Law & Order/CSI mold (that we were sick of 10 years ago.) An actual Law & Order or CSI spin off (which is frankly criminal at this point being we've seen it all.) The show that makes you ask, "What they hell were they thinking?" And the show that makes you ask, "Who the hell is supposed to be the demo for this trash?" I've already looked over [URL="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/tv-pilots-2012-complete-guide-287221"]all the pilots for 2012[/URL] and they all suck. I'm guessing 5 years from now, I will not be watching any prime time programming on the major networks.

I am sort of a more recent viewer of The Good Wife. I always assumed it was a chick show, but it is actually pretty decent as far as lawyer shows go IMO. Lately I am watching a lot of USA and BBC America with some Deadliest Catch thrown in (Those guys are still fishing this season so opies were a bust I assume since Jake Anderson got married this weekend and is heading back out to sea today)

Why God, why?![/QUOTE] Bob's Burgers has no competition in it's Sunday night time slot, and manages to keep up with the ratings of shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy. I personally love Bob's Burgers and find it absolutely hysterical.

The only thing I'm kind of looking forward to right now is the Terry O'Quinn (John Locke from Lost) drama/mystery, 666 Park Avenue. I just want to see Terry O'Quinn again, so I'll give that one a try!

Plus Julianna Margulies is a total cougar. As for scripted cable shows - Dexter, Californication, Game of Thrones, True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, Spartacus, The Glades, Eureka, Alphas, Warehouse 13, Doctor Who, Justified, The Killing, Covert Affairs and Hell on Wheels.

I love shows like The Simpsons, Futurama, South Park and more. So I appreciate funny and satirical shows that are a much ado about nothing. I have also seen some Bob's Burger episodes, but it just isn't my thing. I don't think it is funny at all and that the quality of the show just isn't up to par imho. For me, there is just a disconnect that is preventing the entire series from solidifying into a cohesive unit for me. I think that those characters are the antithesis of the characters from How I Met Your Mother. As for awake, I was sucked in from day 1. I loved how the show used the 2 different psychiatrists as a metaphorical proscenium to frame the show. I want to see how the series ends. I hear that we will be getting some answers by the last episodes. For me personally, I wouldn't mind not finding out which reality is real. To me, that would be a great artistic choice because it would further blur the lines of reality and fantasy, which this series does so convincingly. Oh, and I am disappointed that Harry's Law was cancelled because I really didn't get a chance to see it. And it doesn't help that they don't post the episodes on hulu. I am still trying to find a lawyer show that can fulfill the void left by The Practice...and Boston Legal just didn't scratch that proverbial itch. [/QUOTE] I've started watching it on Netflix the other day. There are only a handful (2-3) episodes out of the 13 that are hilarious. The rest are just filler and try too hard to be awkward and funny.

They are still making "Merlin"? How did I not know this? I thought they cancelled it after Season 1.

I think it's on season 4 now? You can also catch the first 3 on Netflix. It's a cheesy guilty pleasure of mine.

All my shows got picked up - so I'm OK with it haha. New Girl, Parenthood, Modern Family, Criminal Minds, Big Bang Theory, The Office.... those are the only shows I watch on network TV anymore. The two BEST shows I watch are American Horror Story and The Walking Dead (both of which are currently filming their upcoming seasons). Neither are on one of the main networks...cable rules.

Jorge Garcia was the only reason I gave Alcatraz a shot (it didn't keep my interest, though).... I will probably watch the new Terry O'Quinn show as well. I can't bring myself to watch The Vampire Diaries (sorry, Ian Somerhalder) and I keep meaning to give Hawaii Five-O a shot with Daniel Dae Kim but keep forgetting. Is Emilie de Ravin a regular now on Once Upon a Time? I know she was Belle for a few episodes but I wasn't sure if she's a regular or not. And according to Dominic Monaghan's Twitter account, he has a new documentary series coming to BBC later this year. I will probably give that a shot.

I too gave Alcatraz a shot, but didn't stick around. The first two episodes were enough for me. The Vampire Diaries is a show built towards the teen/young adult girl demo, so I'm not shocked you don't watch it (I do, definitely getting better by the season). You should give Person of Interest a Shot, with Michael Emerson (played Ben on LOST), it's quite good. As for the other two, haven't given them a shot yet, but I've heard Once Upon a Time is amazing. May have to add that too my ever growing list, which includes... Plethora amount of reality TV, Dexter, Homeland, HIMYM, Big Bang, True Blood, Grey's Anatomy, American Horror Story, Psych, The Killing, The Office, The Vampire Diaries, Glee, New Girl, Person of Interest, 2 Broke Girls, and I'm sure I'm missing just a few.

I can't believe I forgot about Homeland. The best new series of 2011!

If so, I thought it was a pretty good season and they [B]finally[/B] address their relationship in the finale. May be a good summer show for you. I liked the first season much better than the second of Downton but it's still a great show. Julian Fellowes decided to go a little crazy in the second but it did make for good tv. And who doesn't love Maggie Smith?

It was way better after that, even in its strange direction.

Sure, Lost had a soft "middle seasons" underbelly and the ending left me a bit unfulfilled. Still, it was probably the best series of the aught years.
