I liked Kristen a lot. And the one chance she had at a pit wasn't even aired.
Such a disaster.
The original rules of Road Rules were the best: complete missions in order to survive. Money and food and luxuries are enough motivation to keep the cast working hard. The show ended when it conformed to vote-offs, IMO. (or was it that TERRIBLE season on a boat.....? either or is a fine scapegoat for meeee)
What members of the crew, cast and someone with insight at the management level told me was that the "Viewers Revenge" show concept was great but that it was constrained but things which led to its failure.
Money: This was to be a low-budget remake of Road Rules. The low budget meant that they would combine studio shooting with the road missions generally in the Southern California area, all on a short week (three day) shooting schedule The pit battles would take place in a small rented studio near BMP that instantly proved inadequate to the task, at least making that part of the production look like something from a local access cable channel.
Cast: The new cast largely never clicked with viewers. The "something for everyone" approach with the casting of Veronica, Susie, Kina, Abram, Shane and Adam appeared to be classic casting, but failed to account for the likelihood that the Road Rulers would 1) use all the tricks learned on the challenges to maintain the veteran's hold on the RV; and, 2) form a core bond of veterans based on outside friendships. In a game where majority votes were the rule, people playing as individuals were at a serious disadvantage.
The Pit Crew concept was intended to allow new cast members to become known and establish their individual fan base, as had occurred during Fresh Meat. The savvy actions of the Road Rulers and production's inadequate exposure of the pit crew impaired the fan's opportunity to develop a connection with most of the pit crew.
Production: Perhaps the most damage to the success of the show was the inability of the producers James E. Wade, Rick de Oliveira, Paul Sutera, and co-executive produce Dana DeMars to affect any needed change which the show obviously needed. They couldn't bring their experience to bear because all the shots were apparently being called by Jon Murray himself -- the BMP boss. His hands-on involvement in daily production of the show brought any other creativity to a quick stand-still and there is no evidence that he ever responded creatively to audience dissatisfaction with where the show was headed.
that's interesting to know, thanks for that.
i think that once MTV is one experimenting with the failure of every new show they bring out, they'll realize how successful the concept of RR really was and eventually bring it back.
if not however, they really need to consider preserving the show by releasing it on DVD or iTunes or even for viewing on mtv.com, something!
I think it's great that some of the most recent challenges and RW seasons are on iTunes and such, but I really wish they would release some of the older seasons. I would buy them. It probably wouldn't hurt to release them digitally as opposed to creating DVDs and running the risk of having a bunch of inventory left.

Yeah, ive seen just about all of the RW Seasons, but I've only seen a few RR Seasons in whole like The Quest, Campus Crawl, Semester at Sea, I would love too the ones I haven't really seen yet on Itunes
I forget which station it was on but a few months ago I saw an old Season of RR airing on a local TV station here in Philly, I think it was Northern Trail, I don't even remember what channel it was on, If they're still airing Road Rules I would want too see it
I agree but I hope they don't mess with the formula again.
MTV is all about celebreality now. They are not even taking meetings with production companies about reality programming. They are willing to pay for "star power" as an attraction but not willing to fork over the money required to do Road Rules and anything similar.
Tila Tequila's star power by season two was worth $125,000 per episode.

While you might, many fewer than one million people watched Road Rules episodes, while the finale of MTV’s “A Shot At Love with Tila Tequila” was seen by 6.2 million viewers.
People can wish all they want for a return of the show, but unless you can deliver the ratings and the advertisers, no one at 1515 Broadway will be listening to you...
That's true...one of my graduate classes has lots of just-out-of-college students, and when we talk casually before class I mentioned going home to watch the challenge, and none of them even watched road rules or real world ever! And I've only been out of undergrad for four years...but I guess it was a generational thing to love this show.
yeah i realize that if they can't get the numbers the show is not going to stay on. and the last couple seasons of road rules i wasn't even watching. i think when they started voting people off and bringing in new cast members it was harder to get to know them and make a connection.
Agreed (though we did get some memorable replacement people like Katie, Tina, and Angela). I do prefer when there are no vote offs on RR.
Maybe to revamp the show they could have past Road Rulers have a hand in making up the missions. They could appear (or film a video) on the episode in which their mission appears and explain the rules/referee/etc. That way we can have an interest buzz from the old cast members, yet we don't have them taking over the season. We get a whole new cast of Roadies. Maybe jazz up the look of the RV a little. I'd like to see them make the Roadies have to do well on missions to earn money to live on again. I also think Road Rules should air the same night as a challenge or RW, and there should be a meet up episode with the RWers like they used to have in the past.
Road Rules is good for challenges as well, and those usually do well, so if someone could present a good enough argument to make RR seem like a begrudgingly necessary show to some extent, perhaps MTV would be willing to go with it again.
Yeah, and it also helped to brand those shows together. RR is more of the red headed stepchild (as some RWers have said), so it works to push it along with RW, I feel. And the Challenges were a marriage between them. I so miss RW vs. RR.
I wish RR would get back to its roots. When it started to have vote-offs and Survivor/Big Brother-type challenges, it got aggravating.
I'd rather see them do things that relate to where they're located (racing the bulls in Spain, getting the mayor's key in the States, etc.) as opposed to the crap they've been doing (whoever can hang upside-down 50 feet about the water for the longest wins!). Sigh.

I think it's cool that people are talking about it! It means it was loved =)

So why don't they try to sell it to a smaller station? where it can still be aired and viewed.
So why don't they try to sell it to a smaller station? where it can still be aired and viewed.
They did try. Road rules was in syndication. Obviously it didn't do very well.
They had enough trouble getting people to watch the first run version of later seasons, so I just don't see syndication as an option anymore. While a handful of people on this forum are still holding on, the rest of the world has moved on. ;)
Thanks for that Bacchus if you look closely you can see Donnell "alleged" rap sheet. However I can't find it on the TSG. I wanna see his mugshot and see if he lost any amount of weight.
Donnell was gross. His personality was rank and he was so unattractive.
And when they had to do that striptease for a challenge, seeing Donnell in a thong gave me nightmares.
Oh, and I remembered that Donnell shaved his legs with Skintimate (TM) shaving gel. Guy was a weirdo.
Hey I don't know if it's true or my friend just pulling my chain but, he told me that he had an interview with MTV at the city for Road Rules.
At first I asked him how long ago it was thinking it was a couple of years ago since he is past the age limit, and he says "I got an interview about 3 weeks ago and I'm supposed to find out if I made it to the next round after the new year." Now my friend isn't one to lie or kid around like that and I asked him about his process and he sounded pretty legit. He also included how the person who was interviewing him said not to worry about his age because their trying to target the older generation again.
can the admin or anyone fill me us in on this?
The only new show I know of that BMP is casting at the present time is "Frat House."
Here is the show/casting info from BMP Bunim/Murray Productions/Frat House
yeah, i've kept up with the casting calls that BMP has and when he told me about it, it kind of caught me off guard. The other day was the first time i saw him in months because of school but Me and everyone who knows him, knows hes not the type of guy to lie like that, or at all. He said that he was interviewed at MTV in NYC with a bunch of other people.
hmm..maybe there's something up MTV/BMP's sleeve?
