Quantum of Solace
Has anyone seen the latest Bond flick? It just came out on DVD and for some random, unfamiliar reason I was sent a copy right away (rather than having to wait for two months.) I'm going to be blunt, I have seen every Bond film at least a handful of times and love the franchise - yet beyond the great action scenes this latest release left me with a blank look on my face. I just didn't get it. I was actually confused. I know what you are thinking, how could you get confused with a Bond film where the plot is about a note and a half. Well, I am not sure how it happened - but on multiple occasions I sat there wondering if I missed something. It was almost like I was watching a TV edited version that cut out the good stuff. Anyway, I gave it a 3 star rating on Netflix for the innovative action - but it was one of the least entertaining Bond films in my book since Dalton was Bond... p.s. I do love Daniel Craig. The failings were not his fault. The script was missing humor and the playful Bond essence that is essential.
I saw QoS back when it first hit theaters so I only vaguely remember the plot *spoilers* (Illuminati type world group was the overall adversary but the main villain was buying land which held massive amount of water underground basically to sell it back at inflated prices when the demand would be high) *end spoilers* But I remember just having a "meh" reaction to it. Not great but my no means bad, just there. I think Casino Royale set a new level of expectations for Bond and this installment was just a bit flat. I'll probably give it another look on blu-ray eventually when i catch up with everything else in my queue.
I think Casino Royale set a new level of expectations for Bond and this installment was just a bit flat.
I totally agree. Casino Royale was just plain awesome and I actually watched it again a few weeks ago so, my expectations for the new installment were very high. QoS was good. Just not what I was hoping for coming off the series revival. Also, it was a bit strange to be in the present but in the past. It worked in CR, but felt forced in QoS. I was thinking the whole time, "Wasn't Felix eaten by sharks?" Also, I didn't like the choice for the Leiter character. He seemed bland. Anyway, I am sure they will turn things around in the next film.
I also agree, I was a bit confused after watching QoS. I'm not sure if it was because I didn't rewatch CR before, so I was slow at first, but after watching CR again, I was still confused. I do agree that it was missing the Bond humor. I've always been a Bond fan thanks to my brother (remember when TRL gave away the car from Denise Richards' movie? He was one of the finalists!) but I never really liked any of the Bond movies after Goldeneye until Casino Royale. The Living Daylights will continue to be my favorite Bond movie (opening sequence was filmed where I was born and was apparently I met Dalton), as well as From Russia With Love. I don't think QoS was horrible, I thought it was pretty good in fact, but it did fall flat compared to CR.
