Everest: Beyond the Limit - Season 3
I just read on the Discovery blog that they are back at the tallest mountain in the world filming Everest Beyond the Limit Season 3. I was really disapointed last year when the Chineese shut down the mountain because they feared activists would interupt the Olympic tourch climb to the summit. I guess this year the Himex team (Himalyan Experience) will be using the southern approach so as to not have to deal with any unexpected changes in policy from the Chineese goverment. Right now it looks like many of the climbers are preparing to summit and are acclimating at Camp III -24,500 ft, so I would assume there should be a summit attempt any day now depending on weather. There is something about this show that really grabs me and I can't wait until it airs this fall!
Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth, as measured by the height above sea level of its summit, 8,848 metres (29,029 ft). The mountain, which is part of the Himalaya range in High Asia, is located on the border between Sagarmatha Zone, Nepal, and Tibet, China. In 1856, the Great Trigonometric Survey of India established the first published height of Everest at 29,002 ft (8,840 m), although at the time Everest was known as Peak XV. In 1865, Everest was given its official English name by the Royal Geographical Society upon recommendation of Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India at the time. Waugh was unable to propose an established local name because Nepal and Tibet were closed to foreigners at the time, although Chomolungma had been in common use by Tibetans for centuries. The highest mountain in the world attracts climbers of all levels, from well experienced mountaineers to novice climbers willing to pay substantial sums to professional mountain guides to complete a successful climb. The mountain, while not posing substantial technical climbing difficulty on the standard route (other eight-thousanders such as K2 or Nanga Parbat are much more difficult), still has many inherent dangers such as altitude sickness, weather and wind. By the end of the 2008 climbing season, there had been 4,102 ascents to the summit by about 2,700 individuals. Climbers are a significant source of tourist revenue for Nepal, whose government also requires all prospective climbers to obtain an expensive permit, costing up to $25,000 per person. Everest has claimed 210 lives, including eight who perished during a 1996 storm high on the mountain. Conditions are so difficult in the death zone that most corpses have been left where they fell. Some of them are visible from standard climbing routes.
[via wikipedia]
Season 2 trailer. I see it is on tonight, late, on Discovery. Just might tune in to tide myself though. YouTube - Everest: Beyond the Limit Season 2
And yes, I know I am the only one that watches this show, lol. :D
It looks like they summited just a few hours ago and are heading down the mountain now. It wouldn't hurt you guys to be interested in a show that was not all about gossip, hookups and getting drunk! ;) Ok, off to watch Deadliest catch...I am on a Disc/History kick now the majority of network shows I watch have wrapped up their 2008-2009 seasons.

I hadn't heard of it until now. Is it documentary style where they follow the climbers? I'll check my local listings to see when I can catch it?

It is documentary style and they follow the climbers from base camp up the mountain. Some will summit, some will not. Some will be cut before even getting an opportunity to move to the higher altitudes because they are not deemed fit enough to make the push. Much like Deadliest catch, it is all about the danger and there are always people dying, losing fingers, etc. It is one of my favorite actuality shows, if not my favorite.
Wait, they actually make those?
There are 7 of them, but 4 are in Spanish and 1 was just canceled. :D

Though every time someone dies in Deadliest Catch I ball my eyes out, so hopefully it will only be loss of limb. You can't get me all psyched up then make me wait until October!! lol

I will have to start Netflix myself this summer since my roommate and I are moving out at the end of the month and she has the subscription. I'll have to avoid spoiling myself and try my best not to Google the big dramz!
Just a quick programming note: Everest Beyond the Limit Season 3 is currently scheduled to premiere on January 6, 2010.
Always been a fan of these types of shows, I remember the year the Eco-Challenge was done with Hayden Christensen getting lost in the Fiji jungle for 4 hours walking in circles and Timmy Beggy was part of a reality show team that eventually had to give up but somehow the Playboy team managed to finish. If Everest is on NetFlix, I'll be adding it to my queue then. If it is InstantPlay, I might even watch some tonight.

I loved that series too!
I remember it being in the fall of 1999 because Hayden Christensen and Phantom Menace had just become big news earlier in May.
Interesting. I just checked my guide and this premieres tonight with a double episode.
I'm not sure what happened, but I think that year break killed the show. Last night they ran the first two episodes and then snuck in a third episode in the middle of the night. The rest of the series plays out this week at random hours. They seem to be burning it off... The editing is totally different and it plays out in a much more straight forward almost National Geographic way, rather than a fair mix of reality and drama (which was seen in the other seasons.) Also, instead of charting the entire group in a moving storyline, they are choosing a primary focus for each episode and basically sticking with it. I still enjoyed the episodes I have seen thus far - but this is not the same show.
I may wait until it becomes available on NetFlix's InstantPlay.
