The Colony (Discovery)
The Colony will take place over the course of ten weeks on the outskirts of Los Angeles, and will follow ten volunteers in an environment that simulates life after a global catastrophe. Big Brother meets Survivor meets The Alaska Experiment? Sounds interesting. I may just watch it!
Watching this now. It's okay. I'll probably give it another shot with the second ep, but so far it's not really drawing me in. It should be interesting to see what happens once they run out of the food they've scavenged.
I thought it was pretty cool.

Cool! OPD you rock my socks! I would have never known! I hope it is worth it!
Oh I just saw it's on again at 10:00 for us!
Yeah, it should be on at 10 for me too, but my mom's cable is weird and broadcasts random channels in EST. MTV, VH1, Bravo, Discovery and TLC all do that for us. It was definitely interesting but I was wicked annoyed with Mike I believe his name was. I don't think I would want to try and survive with him. haha ;) Their need for electricity was odd to me. I didn't seem like a necessity I would work hard to produce unless I needed the hours in the night to make something like plumbing work.

Here's my half-hour-into-the-episode-verdict: Meh. (Although I did think it was neat how they filtered their water.)
Their need for electricity was odd to me. I think possibly because I've actually thought about something along this line in the past (I think it was that creepy Steven King book that put it into my mind.) The reason they set up the electric is because (from what I gathered) it is their job first to survive and then to rebuild "society." From the preview for the season it showed that they were doing all sorts of crazy things like building vehicles and some sort of solar power rig. They have 10 weeks to come up with stuff and the cast is packed with all sorts of different talent including a machinist, contractor, general carpenter and two engineers. I'm hoping they build some cool Swiss Family Robinson stuff! Overall, I can see how it might not be a show for some people - but I plan to tune in next week.

I had forgotten the whole idea of rebuilding "society". I will give it another shot and see how it goes. I do want to see how they deal once the canned food is gone since there is not much for them to scavenge in that part of LA. I did see what looked like some planters, or at least dirt held in by wood planks with green things growing out of it, during the scene where the elderly man took a rain shower. Maybe they will be able to plant?

Can someone explain to me the very beginning of this show? When they were walking to the "sanctuary" and they were walking across some bridge and you could see all the dilapidated buildings in the background...could they see those, or were they CGI, or were they on some ginormous outdoor set? That part seemed a little strange to me.

I mean, if they want potatoes it will take the entire time they are there to grow them, lol. Sure, some things grow faster (maybe they could have a bowl of lettuce in 3 or 4 weeks) but as a whole I think the prospects for agriculture are slim unless they are to consume fast growing weeds (like dandelions.) It will be interesting to see what they do about the food situation. Wonder how the pigeon situation is around that industrial zone?
Although the LA skyline is pretty crummy, that was CGI.
LoL I figured, but they were saying things that made me think they could see that stuff. Must have just been "playing along".
LoL I figured, but they were saying things that made me think they could see that stuff. Must have just been "playing along".
Well, it looks like they are in an abandoned area (as well as playing along.)

That bridge is similar to many that cross the LA river. I think the show bought/rented an area of the district to use. I believe they said they fenced off an area that they will use so the people can't come into contact with the real world during the 10 weeks. Here are some photos of some of the bridges: 6th St. 26th St.
When they were walking on the bridge they showed a soldering wreck of a skyline in the background (at least I swear they did.)
Ha, they might have, I don't really remember that well. I was just thinking, thank goodness I am out of LA now!

Anyone watching this tonight? I decided to stick with it again this week to see where it goes. Plus putting it after a great season finale to Deadliest Catch doesn't hurt either. :)

Paplebon. boo!) and then Deadliest Catch tonight. I'm recording it.

I can't watch the game, but oh boy are my friends complaining! I swear he is doing this to just screw with the fans because he's bored. At least i hope that's the problem because his "saves" are getting ridiculous.

I might try and catch it, but I'm super tired today so I'm going to try and go to bed early.
I enjoyed the episode. It is like Junkyard Wars meets Big Brother. That gasifier was sweet! I can't wait to see what they build next.
Anyone else watching the finale tonight? This is really good reality programming. They think it is real. That is what makes it good TV and gripping. While I really enjoy the builds that they do (the engineer within me) - the stress they are under along with the realistic environ created by the producers allows this show to stand out in the dense forest of quasi reality offerings. Is it a favorite of mine? Not really. But there is enough there for me to tune in weekly and I kind of hope that there is a sequel with lessons learned.
i wanted to volunteer :( why didn't they post it somewhere that we could?
i wanted to volunteer :( why didn't they post it somewhere that we could?
Well, you can watch it with the rest of us. Should be good TV. What is weird is that they are calling it a 'Series Premiere" so it seems that they are moving away from the original format. Although, maybe I am reading too much into the TV Guide information.
Anyone else going to watch this tonight after The Deadliest Catch finale? They have been advertising it like crazy so it could pull a good audience.
While I am enjoying the show (I like the idea of building amazing things out of what is just there) I feel that it is somewhat disingenuous in that this can not be fully mocked out. I know that if something happened as is detailed in the initial episode, there would be survivors with weapons, which would make the security situation much different. Instead of spending valuable resources building a giant fort that no one could enter, you could instead take that time to place signs that said, "Cross this point and you will be shot dead." I personally don't enjoy the "bandits" approach to the series. I think it should be assumed that the survivors will find weapons and will kill others for their survival. I am more interested in what they can do with the waste of an area to survive, be it make electricity, purify water, rebuild vehicles - Swiss Family Robinson 2010. I don't like the approach because it leaves out the fact that in such a survival situation, there would be lots of gun play. The wild west. This was shot in New Orleans. I promise that in 10 acres of abandoned houses, you would find an arsenal...
Skip my previous post... I am really getting into this season. Tonight's episode was good, but the ending was great. They are going hardcore and I can see how the colonists begin to believe that this fauxality is a reality. They are not doing a weak handed rendition of violence. They have highly trained people that are going full force, probably ex military with the skills needed to fend off a counter attack from someone that is starting to believe their life might be in jeopardy. I appreciate the outside the box engineering the most, but the vandal threat, if done right (like tonight) does add to the show.
