Funny you should mention that. I was just talking to a New York Daily News writer the other day about that event.
I was having dinner with Beth at Cipriani's on Broadway in Manhattan either the day before or the day "The Duel's" reunion show was taped. The restaurant is only two table wide with a separating aisle in the rear private area where celebs tend to eat, away from the front windows of the restaurant, so everyone is rather close together. Shortly after we sat down, Beth said, "Oh my God! Do not turn around." (My back was to the aisle) For the next two hours, Beth was having an animated non-verbal "conversation" with someone at the table behind me (and ignoring me, a common practice I'm accustomed to). For the next two hours, I was left in annoying suspense as to the mystery person/persons behind me.
As we finally stood up to leave the restaurant, so did four guys at the table behind us. One of them who had been sitting with his back to the wall and directly facing Beth was George Clooney. I nodded to George and laughed, as did he. I walked ahead of everyone out of the restaurant to scout for photographers, leaving Beth and George together to talk just inside in the bar area. There were several photographers outside, obviously waiting for George. Per our plan quickly arranged inside, Beth waited to walk outside until I had hailed a taxi. After we were safely in the taxi, George and his party came out and the cameras started clicking as we drove away. We thought Beth had escaped any attention, but someone inside the restaurant called one of the New York newspaper's tip line and their resulting story was embellished about Beth and George being seen together.
It turned out, that they have a number of mutual friends in the film industry. Yes, he did know who she was and commented on the challenges. Nothing about "Hollywood" surprises me any more. Apparently when you spend months on location in a hotel room or rented temp home, watching MTV is one of the things on an actor's "I'm bored and away from home" checklist.
That is a really cool story! We often put mega stars (like Clooney) on a pedestal and forget that they are human, watch TV and have other celebs that they love ("cyber stalk") just like the rest of us. There is nothing about celebrity that discounts ones ability to turn to trashy reality programming and enjoy it. ;)
Cool Story V1, thanks for sharing. It cracks me up how blown out of proportion things get in the papparazi industry. It still entertains me though, LOL
We need Beth on a challenge for 2021.
