Missing Real World Seasons Coming to Paramount Plus? (Speculation)

I only saw this because someone posted about in on The Real World Reddit, but apparently the official Facebook of The Real World has been posting throwback clips for the past few months in between posting clips promoting the Real World Los Angeles Homecoming.

The exciting thing is that they've been posting clips from some of the "missing seasons" 5-11 (Miami, Boston, Seattle, Hawaii etc)!

Many people in the comments section are making it known that they want these seasons on Paramount Plus and that it is frustrating that they are promoting the Real World with clips of seasons that aren't officially available to stream. I was excited and then frustrated too by that fact.

BUT I think it is a VERY good sign that they are posting these clips. To me, it indicates that they have begun the process of digitizing these seasons for streaming (the clips are all high quality and I don't believe we have seen these specific clips digitized anywhere before this), as well as securing the original music rights or replacing any music they cannot license with original music (much like they have done with other seasons). It doesn't make sense that they would digitize these clips just for promotional use on Facebook. I think (and hope!) they are preparing all of these seasons for streaming on Paramount Plus, hopefully this year!

What do y'all think?

Yes. We need all seasons of RW, RR, The Challenge.

I would DIE if we get the Road Rules seasons, The Challenge I would love in better quality, but I do have all the seasons

I wonder if this does happen, if it will include the international seasons like cancun and sydney

i hope so but seeing all the clips of old rw/challenge seasons on homecoming/all-stars shows that they still have all the footage they're just not putting it anywhere.

They have it. They are just too lazy to fix the music issues, which an intern could probably do. It's just weird to me they've invested so much in nostalgic RW & TC but won't release all seasons.

Did you really need to comment? If you're not interested, you don't have to read the thread. This is a forum for discussing The Real World, where else would I post something like this, lol.

This topic/question gets brought up in multiple threads ("where can I stream old seasons of the show that aren't on Paramount Plus?") so I thought it was an interesting and unusual development that an official page is actually posting clips from these seasons. I just wanted to see what other people thought about it.

I am not sure what the issue is with all of the old challenges, but yes, MTV/Bunim-Murray/Paramount Plus most definitely have an archive of all of the old shows.

The issue would be digitizing what were likely physical tapes which does take some time. But as most people have said, the thing that takes the most time is securing music rights. The Real World relied heavily on using pop/rock/hip-hop songs of the day as background music, but did not get the rights to use this music in every format forever. Music rights issues are complicated and sometimes take a very very long time to resolve. There is usually a lot of back and forth between the media company and whichever organization owns the rights to the music. This can take months to years, so I am not surprised it is taking this long. If an agreement can't be reached, Bunim-Murray would have to find alternate music or hire someone to compose basic background music which would also take a substantial amount of time. This is what they did for some of the seasons that ended up in syndication. Many episodes of the first 4 seasons of Road Rules that went into syndication have corny generic background music instead of the original music.

That's why I found it interesting/exciting that the official Facebook page is posting these clips from these specific seasons. To me it would indicate that they are at least in the process of converting tapes to digital and I don't know why they would do that just to promote the show on Facebook? Some of the posts even say something like, "Watch old seasons of The Real World on Paramount Plus". Why would they promote these missing seasons if they weren't intending to put them up on Paramount Plus?

the real world generic thread?

Interesting to see what seasons and scenes they choose to post. Seems like people have stayed on their neck about the missing seasons since last fall but they still haven't delivered.

They also only posted New Orleans once so I am assuming since they knew it was coming they saved clips to help promote it like they did LA. I wonder if we can get clues about the season 4 by what seasons they post/don't post on the page.

I dunno. They've been posting these old clips of non-streaming seasons for quite a while now... I'd expect SOME progress at uploading these old seasons by now. Especially New Orleans!

those clips still look like they snatched them off YouTube lmao so hopefully they're actually trying to get them posted instead of teasing

The clips are definitely not snatched from Youtube. They look like professionally digitized copies of the original master tapes from the 90s.

For example, today they posted another clip from Season 7 (Seattle). This clip is from Episode 5, which has never been uploaded to Youtube and was not included in the bootleg copies that have been circulating online as DVDs since the 2000s.

Sure, it doesn't look like they remastered it or anything, but it definitely doesn't have the fuzzy artifacts of something that was taped off TV like the bootlegs that have been available. This is definitely coming from the original tapes at Bunim-Murray.

Hopefully with the upcoming New Orleans Homecoming Paramount will put up all these old seasons!

That music on that clip is dubbed it's not the original. If they are dubbing over the original music then why aren't they releasing it on Paramount or elsewhere?  If it's one thing I know it's the background music from seasons 5-8 and I know this isn't original. The Hawaii and Miami clips this page shows has the original music intact.

Don't know if they are doing all the seasons but they are putting New Orleans Season 9 up on Paramount in April. Hopefully it's all the  missing seasons. Guessing their Homecoming will air in April/May based on this news.

Ugh I want New Orleans now!

Finally!

And I will be so pissed if they don't put up all the other seasons when they put up New Orleans, but I honestly would not be shocked if they just put up New Orleans because...they suck haha.

I hope we gets the first 14 and Road Rules!

Psy, those idiots are too stupid or too coked out to make any good decisions no matter how loud you say it.  We're lucky we even got 3 seasons of All Stars.
