BB17 is pretty simple if you love Vanessa and JMac? Then you will love the season. Vanessa is one of the best players of the new era and Johnny Mac is one of the best characters of the modern era. He is iconic in the DR honestly. But seeing as you have already said you do not like Vanessa........ Yah I can see why you do not like this season. Austin's eviction is one of the absolute best evictions all time. NO SHOES! A legit blindside. Thank God James was already evicted so he did not ruin it lol.
I just remember Vaneesa being so emotional but not in a funny way like Rachel. It was super annoying. Johnny Mac was likable enough but his voice drove me crazy lol. But a lot of times when I do rewatches my opinions change. The lack of diversity especially with it being only 2 seasons after BB15's controversy was really off-putting to me also.

All the recent seasons from BB15-BB21 mainly consisted of one person or one alliance running the season:
BB15: The racist alliance dominated
BB16: Derrick dominated
BB17: Vanessa dominated. Although power did shift during the near end.
BB18: Horrible winner but only recent season where the power shifted weekly
BB19: Paul and production dominated
BB20: Tyler's alliance dominated
BB21: Jackson's alliance dominated
There weren't a lot of actual people willing to play on recent seasons, it was literally just one alliance or one person controlling 90% of the evictions on the season. I can understand why people dislike most of the newer seasons but back then most seasons were really unpredictable on who would win and the power shifted weekly. Power didn't shift in recent seasons until the near end and with that most of the winners weren't memorable.
I didn't like Vanessa at all and I find her to be very overrated by the BB community. Was she a good player ? Yes but she's not even in my top 15 for best female BB players

BB21 did have power shifts, that's how Nicole and Cliff managed to get so far. "Jackson's alliance" did run the game but it changed mid-way through the season from "Gr8teful" to him, Holly, Cliff and Nicole. And we also had the Jess HOH that was very satisfying to watch. But yeah, not a good season overall because of its unlikeable characters. It was less predictable than BB19 and BB20 though...
