Back then they used to alternate Real World and Challenge seasons that's why it was a longer wait because one need it to be done airing its 10 episodes plus reunion.
After Real World got cancelled they started doing more challenge seasons then the spinoffs. So the wait for the show was shorter. It's crazy to think I have done this spoilers since Free agents.
And Jay still follows that man ? Clownery your honor

Why does everyone keep asking if this is the longest break of the challenge ever? Seasons used to go 6-10months in between....
Rivals 2 ended Sept 25th
Free Agents aired April 10
Free Agents ended June 26th
Exes 2 aired January 6th (months early because of Diam's passing)
