Charleston SC has a some very nice architecture and has a great amount of history to it. It is more interesting than Atlanta or Dallas to me, and only marginally more interesting than Nashville. I also enjoy architecture and history though.
It's a premier city in a state that has 50+ billion more GDP than the entire country you are posting from. So I am guessing, South Carolinians are thinking - that poor dumb b*****d.
Charleston is hardly a well known city. Its not even in the top 200 most populated cities in the US.
I've heard of it, but I'm not surprised a few people haven't, especially if their not from the US.

You think the average MTV viewer cares about the culture, history and architecture of a city?
You think the average MTV viewer cares about the culture, history and architecture of a city?
I don't know nor do I care. I was giving my opinion on why I liked Charleston.
To answer your question more directly, some actually might, especially if it was their field of study in college. Remember, MTV was never just for high schoolers but also focused on reaching people in their late 20s.
Charleston is a well known city, especially in the South. Why? It was one of the cities that pushed for secession leading into the Civil War. It still has much of that history as well. Fort Sumter lies off of its coastline as well. Just because a city is not in the Top 200 Most Populated does not mean it is not well known.
As someone who lives outside of the US, Charleston is still a pretty well known city.
When I watch TRW, I want the location to be another "character" of the show... it plays just as big a role as everyone in the cast. The location gives you the "feel" of the season... seeing the beautiful architecture of Charleston... its diverse art life... the fisheries.. just everything about the city sounds appealing to watch... it's no wonder they film a bunch of movies there. Who cares how populated the city is?
And to BC, "Who cares about culture and history?" wow... we really have come a long way since the first few seasons of this show...
I don't consider Charleston to be a bad city it just isn't the right choice for The Real World especially when they are trying to save the show. In my opinion two factors that help build buzz before a show airs would be the location and rumored cast. When most people hear The Real World: Charleston they won't be jumping out of their seats with excitement.
Cool so they stealin the buckwild demographic
they are not talking about the Charleston in west Virginia. Its the one in South Carolina

That was mean
That was mean
I am confused as to what was mean. The poster stated they had never heard of Charleston and that [the people of Charleston] were either poor or dumb. I was factually pointing out that the country in which he currently resides is poorer (and now looking at the abysmal literacy rates, dumber). I was making a clarification, not a slight.

Actually it is the 78th largest metro in the US, not that it matters. Key West has a population of 24,649 and The Real World filmed there. Charlotte Amalie has a population of 18,481 and The Real World filmed there. In the end, locations are not chosen based population nor are location decisions based on what people from other countries have or have not heard of.

It's actually sad this had to be pointed out, but obviously it did.

Excellent read and I commented too
I honestly liked the fact that Production didn't step in the fight. In MY opinion, if I was on a show called The Real World I would like for me and my roommates to be able to solve our problems on our own. The Real World is about showcasing real people and how they handle living with strangers and the conflict that comes with it. In the outside World if you provoke someone and they fight you there isn't any magical Production Team to intervene and help you. I don't think the Article should compare Portland to older seasons being that we live in a completely different time where situations are obviously going to be handled differently AND I'm not saying that Nia, Johnny, or Avery handled the situation correctly especially when it started over dog ****.

And in the Real World, Johnny might have fought back or more appropriately, Nia would be in jail on assault charges and trying to finish her book from her cell. This is not counting of course, her drug use or threatening her roommates daily. Both of which would have involved the police.
I actually find Charleston to be quite a nice and charming location to move to. Then again, I'm Canadian so I don't know everything about the cities in the U.S. But from what I know about the place, its a quaint seaside city, with beautiful architecture, art, and history.
I'd actually much prefer it to be Charleston, over cities like Nashville, Dallas, and Atlanta. None of those are intriguing places to me... personally they don't have that appeal of wanting to visit or live there.
Charleston is a fairly old city within the US, having been founded in 1670 (only 30 years later than Boston and before some major cities such as Philadelphia). It had a large role in the American Revolution, being one of the main bases of operations for British forces, and was also the site of the first major battle in the American Civil War.
In the years after founding, it was a wealthy area due to the numerous lucrative plantations in the region. The slaveowners had magnificently sprawling houses with some unique architectural qualities; many of these homes remain today and they would be well-suited for a RW shoot, although they're considered historic so I'm not sure BMP would be able to get the greenlight to do that.
Yvan, not sure if it's actually going to happen but I did note there's already a petition floating around on charge.org to try to keep TRW from being filmed there. Amusing...

If we're being technical Jordan would have had assault charges long ago for trying to strangle Nia on his bed and Johnny could have also faced legal trouble for throwing the drink in Nia's face. However, instead of looking at the worse case scenario of what would happen in reality this could have been all avoided if everyone acted like real adults when it came to the dog ****.
Johnny could have also faced legal trouble for throwing the drink in Nia's face.
My advice: Don't practice law without a license.
If we're being technical Jordan would have had assault charges long ago for trying to strangle Nia on his bed ....
This would be after she "assaulted" him with the an object and instigated the entire incident.
My advice: Don't practice law without a license.
Umm Sir...Throwing a drink in someone's face is considered Assault. I never said he would go to jail for it but he would have gotten in legal trouble. I know someone who personally has.
This would be after she "assaulted" him with the an object and instigated the entire incident.
I hope you aren't talking about Cheerios. She didn't pick up the lamp until after he had already choked her.

100% agree. I haven't been to Nashville or Dallas, the comparison cities you listed, but I agree that Charleston is charming and has something that Atlanta doesn't. After visiting for a week, I decided that I really wanted to move to Charleston one day. I can't now, so seeing it on TV will be the next best thing. <3

I was referring to before he went into her room actually when she was rapping him on the forehead.

We call it nuisance litigation on the civil side. I've read the Oregon statue on assault and unless the substance is caustic or damages valuable property, the police will never take anything to the prosecutor. The courts are too busy with real crime.

I read that last night. I think I'm done with the real world.

Yeah with my friend it was eventually thrown out but he still paid quite a bit of money because the person who pursued it was just doing it to be spiteful. It's silly but it's something you have to careful about depending on who you're dealing with and Nia made it known on Afterbuzz that she could have did it to Johnny.
I was referring to before he went into her room actually when she was rapping him on the forehead.
Oh thanks for clarifying. Looking back at that whole situation Nia and Jordan could have both got in trouble behind their weird drunken love fest.

I finally read the Variety article attached by V1man. I had not watched RW Portland and now I'm glad I didn't. I was horrified at the type and duration of violent behavior just in the clip attached in the article. Why wasn't Nia immediately ejected from the series? Rhetorical question. Doesn't anyone believe in verbal jousting anymore?

According to Johnny, he actually talked to the Producers and they said they would NOT interfere. It's criminal. You should listen to his and Averey's interviews with the Bus Driver Route on youtube. BTW, Johnny and Averey are still together.
