This cast is tame compared to what they could do for Duel 3, you have the same cast as this season and swap out 4 randoms males with Tyler, Mark, Kenny and Evan (while keeping Zach, Frank, Wes, Johnny, and CT) and watch the ratings score challenge record highs..This is about the cast nothing more, sure if MTV got some advers on other channels or sites it could help but having the star challenge people and having them tweet promote would be far better..This is a good core cast, then throw in the others I just mentioned and keep re-organizing exciting formats and the show can do well..Doing Duel 3 and Old School vs New School would be prime formats for the next challenges, then go back to ruins/inferno etc..Then a challenge based on team captains again, having fan favorites is the way to go
Well we also don't know the demographic rating, which is what you say is all that matters, so we can't really decide anything yet
What we do know is that the 18-34 number will be less than the 18-49 result, so it will be less than 1.5M reported. We will probably never know the 12-18 number since I can't imagine MTV touting ratings from a bunch of teens in response to a cast of people who appeared drunk -- or on their way to being drunk -- for most of 90 minutes. That kind of hubris would take some real cajones on the part of MTV.
Well I am relieved it started off well. I just hope it maintains and improves but the ratings always make me a bit nervous. Especially with the recent string of poor numbers. I like the points made about advertising. It seems like the challenge/Real World doesn't exists outside of MTV and before Portland, those shows were hardly even advertised on MTV. Why so little effort?
While watching the challenge I saw an ad for another challenge like show called summer camp. I checked out the first episode last night and it doesn't seem to have half the fun built into this challenge does. It just seemed really bland. I'm curios to see what kind of ratings they pull because if they beat out the challenge or even come close, advertising had to play some role.
I always wonder how much of the history of the characters viewers are aware of. It seems to be more than I think. I am a fairly hardcore fan, been paying closer attention to the challenges and Real World for the last 5 years or so than I did before, but if people are really tuning in to see CT and Diem dynamic, then the audience is a lot more knowledgeable than I would have imagined. Heck I was really surprised to see CT and Wes trending. People are aware of that beef (even though a lot of it was recent) I suppose I figured most people just watch extremely casually to see if anything interesting is happening.
Pretty nice start considering how bad ratings have been from RW: St. Thomas, Battle of the Seasons, & RW: Portland I have a feeling ratings will continue to rise throughout the season.
Yes especially whatever episode has CT pushing/shoving Frank, I mean come on what else would you rather see on a beautiful Wednesday night other than a little **** like Frank get punked and embarrassed.

Are you sure that feeling is not gas?
Im happy, but I guess this just shows BMP that they need CT/Johnny/Paula to get ratings. I could go into a mini rant, but im on my phone. Lol.
I don't think it says to BMP that they need Johnny or Paula. They were both essentially non-factors in the premiere and were part of Cutthroat which did horrible in the ratings. BMP knows that CT is the most popular male and brings in the most ratings, so they are going to focus on him as much as possible. The show had a decent premiere, but 1 episode doesn't mean anything. What happens to the audience over the season is what will matter.
Just a suggestion:
Could the ratings always be updated in the first post of this topic? It just makes it easier than scanning through pages and pages of stuff to find them.
Does the ratings take into account the immediate replay and how are internet views considered? I personally know a few people who missed the 10PM airing and then watched it later that night or the next day on mtv.com..I think a lot more people are watching than these ratings suggest, it's Summer so people are busy and catch the show at other times
Does the ratings take into account the immediate replay
No. The immediate replay has its own ratings figure.
how are internet views considered?
They are not.
I think a lot more people are watching than these ratings suggest
MTV can't present its shows to advertisers based on what the ratings suggest.

That's true, I just think the ratings and total views are a lot higher than it seems, especially compared to Seasons. Seasons started during the school year and still had bad ratings, if this season had started during the school year it would be far higher, I would think (and hope) the people at MTV realize how hard it is to maintain a Summer audience and offering a show/cast similar challenge during the year will have higher ratings so it's not worth getting rid of
It appears no one caught this on the 12th...

The Challenge Rivals II
via press release:
MTV’S “THE CHALLENGE: RIVALS II” DEBUT RANKS AS THE
#1 ORIGINAL CABLE SERIES OF THE DAY
Show is Wednesday’s Most Social Television Series
Santa Monica, CA (July 12, 2013) —The 90-minute season premiere of MTV’s “The Challenge: Rivals II” had a strong debut Wednesday night, ranking as the #1 original cable series of the day. Drawing in 1.6 million total viewers and a strong 1.5 P12-34 rating, the season premiere was up +28 percent from the debut of “The Challenge: Battle of the Seasons” debut.
According to Social Guide, “The Challenge: Rivals II” was also the most social television series of the day on Wednesday across all television. Additionally, the series trended four times between 10:00 – 11:00 p.m., and MTV was the #1 most buzz worthy network of the night driving 83,315 total conversations.
“The Challenge: Rivals II,” hosted by TJ Lavin, pits enemy alongside enemy and asks the question: What do you care about more— old grudges or big money? Some pairs like bad boy CT and master manipulator Wes have been going at each other for years, while others like Frank and Johnny have beef because of a Twitter war! All kinds of rivalries are here, from Challenge veteran Paula, who hooked up with her partner Emily’s ex, to Diem and Aneesa, former friends who betrayed each other on a past Challenge. But if you think the drama is in the past for these competitors, think again. The surprises start immediately when a twist sends shockwaves throughout the house, not to mention when a New Girl hooks up with CT right under his ex Diem’s nose. And that’s only the beginning for these Rivals.
In next week’s episode, airing Wednesday, July 17 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT, the rivals get closer than ever before in a sexy challenge that has each contestant literally tied upside down to each other. And, one of the new girls has a freak out when her hookup with a veteran bad boy doesn’t go as planned.
“The Challenge: Rivals II” is the only destination to watch full episodes, check out cast photos, bios, sneak peeks and more. To sound off on Twitter and Facebook, use the official hashtag #rivals2 and visit the “The Challenge” Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/mtvthechallenge
“The Challenge: Rivals II,” was created for MTV by Bunim/Murray Productions. Jonathan Murray, Scott Freeman and Justin Booth serve as Executive Producers. Jacquelyn French is the MTV Executive in charge of production.

No, I saw it, but aside from being PR fluff that I've come to expect from MTV, I found the reference to the "rivals get closer than ever in a sexy challenge" to be off-putting. Sorry, same sex face-to-crotch partnering is not my idea of "sexy," and receiving mention in an article extolling the rating in a demo bracket beginning at age 12 is simply disgusting, imo. MTV is either tone-deaf or someone is shoving their own social agenda in my face.
i hope rivals 2 is still rated number 1 on wedensday and kick big brother 15 usa butt
Yeah that won't happen. Rivals 2 was the #1 rated original show in its time slot on cable for the demo MTV wants. It wasn't the highest rated show on TV for Wednesday nor was it close.
Still laughing to myself about the one girl on Big Brother he was adamant that The Real World was a higher rated/more relevant realty show today than Big Brother.
Lets hope for a rise and not a dip tomorrow. Seems a little unfair calling it "original" programming though. I mean yea, Rivals II has never happened before but it is a direct sequel to Rivals and its not like the challenges aren't one of the most storied reality franchises in existence with over a decade of shows under its belt. Original doesn't come to my mind.

Original programming as in the episode hasn't aired on TV before. Syndicated shows and reruns are beating it which is perhaps even more troubling.

Well you were always the one touting about how this was the only rating that actually mattered and the fact that there's a press release about how well it did in the key demo should mean something right? Or was that news you said you had a few weeks ago simply that this is the last season no matter what?

I agree that the rating is the demo is positive (even if it's not 2+M viewers like the old school challenges). What I really object to are the other comments that I referenced in the release.

Comparing old school challenges to newer ones isn't a fair comparison. The way people watch tv has evolved too much to compare them.

Fair comparison? What does that mean and how does one define it? So does that suggest there is even more significance to a Jersey shore 5.6M viewership at one point when placed head to head against a challenge 1.2 at the time?

To be fair Jersey Shore was a lot bigger thing, people would have parties on JShore night and clubs would show the episodes, the Challenge is nowhere near that level of popularity and I'm sure more people DVR/watch it online than they did for Jersey Shore
