The Artist has been in my Netflix queue since it came out, but I just can't seem to pull the trigger. It will probably take it showing up on HBO for me to actually watch it.
I feel the same way about Amour, although I did love Jean-Louis Trintignant in Red so I'm intrigued even though I know it is going to be depressing. A movie that moves at a glacial pace about people dying of old age. Wow, that must be packing them in at the theaters!
It took me forever to watch it, but one night I was bored and decided to check it out. I wasn't disappointed.
I don't know anyone who has seen Amour. It grossed less than $1M in the US.
but it's hard to ignore - she must have done a pretty good job.
My sentiments exactly. It's about time more people instead of the same demographic win these awards.
Although I love Denzel's acting I was lol-ing at him being in the best picture category at the GG for Flight. That was one terrible movie.
I usually try to see every Best Picture nominee before the Oscars, but this year I'm finding myself not really caring to see them all.
Loved
Argo
Silver Linings Playbook
Liked
Les Miserables
Lincoln
Zero Dark Thirty
Django Unchained is the only other nominee I really have the desire to go pay to see - and I'll probably do that sometime this week.
I will say - I saw The Impossible recently and Naomi Watts' nomination for Best Lead Actress is very well deserved. That was a good movie. It's not nominated for Best Picture but I definitely recommend seeing it.

OMG I know right??? I thought The Impossible was phenomenal... never has a movie put me through such an emotional experience like that one did. Watts' acting was brilliant... just powerful acting all around from the cast.
Please go watch that movie when you get the chance! Its definitely worth it!
I didn't see Looper at the theater, but grabbed the Blu-ray this weekend and it hit on every level. I will admit, I feel a bit undeserved in that I wasn't exactly happy in how it ended, but I knew that is how it had to end.
I want to see Looper though. I already know the ending to that movie and Mama but I still am interested in both films.
I've seen all the nominated films, except Amour. I'm holding out as long as possible to see it because it has yet to catch my eye in any preview or small commercial for it that I've seen.
As for the others, here is my rank on how I stand on them from Best to Worst (even though none of them are bad at all).
Argo
Les Miserables
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Django Unchained
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty
Life of Pi
Lincoln

I did not like Les Mis at all. I feel that it didn't transfer well to screen. It was hard for me to connect with the actors. In addition, the whole movie was like, "Hey, it's a skinny Anne Hathaway and she's singling!".. "Look, Russell Crowe is singing..."... "Hugh Jackman is singing..." The big names were too distracting. I realize many of them have done Broadway/Theater and aren't exclusively film actors, but it was too much at once.
I feel it comprised the integrity of the musical.

I almost enjoyed it MORE on the big screen than I did on stage. I thought it was EASIER to connect with the characters - 1) because you actually could see their faces and emotions as they were singing and 2) because the story was better explained and easier to follow in the film.
I thought Les Mis was great.

I don't understand this at all. They're actors. How famous they are shouldn't matter at all. They were all convincing in their roles. It shouldn't matter who the actor is if they sell it. I almost feel like some people go into movies like this wanting to dislike it because of the actors involved.

Here's how I've rated the ones I've seen so far:
Silver Linings Playbook (A) - would watch again
Django Unchained (A) - would watch again
Les Miserables (A-/A) - would watch again, only because I'm a sucker for musicals
Lincoln (A-/A) - would not watch again
Argo (B+/A-) - would watch again
Zero Dark Thirty (B) - would not watch again

I definitely give them all really high scores on the letter scale. I would see any of them again, except for maybe Lincoln.

That wasn't my mind set at all. I was stoked to see this film. It just didn't work for me. An actor should be able to disappear into a role. It had nothing to do with how famous they are. While they are "the big names", I'bve enjoyed all of their work previously and have never had this issue. For me, it just didn't work. Anne Hathaway (and I LOVE her) did not become Fantine. She was just a scrawny little singing Anne Hathaway.
Lots of people loved it.. and that's great. I did not love it. To each their own.
While Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway are both remarkable in Les Mis, to me, the film's true breakout star is Eddie Redmayne. He was phenomenal. He made Marius likable for me. In the stage version I always just brushed him off because he seemed so oblivious to all the people dying for him. But in the movie, he was so much more fleshed out and I think a lot of that has to do with Redmayne's brilliant performance of him.
I expected Jackman and Hathaway to give great performances - so that's also another reason why Redmayne was such an unexpected surprise for me.

I agree. I remember the first time I saw Saving Private Ryan. I was fully immersed in the story (starting with the most horrific movie WWII battle sequence of all time) when all of a sudden Ted Danson pops up on the screen. I'm thinking, what is Sam Malone doing in Northern France in 1944? Shouldn't he be at Cheers or a Red Sox game?
It was impossible to suspend belief, he just didn't belong in that movie and didn't blend into the role.

I think the two that really got into their roles the best were Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen. They seemed to fully embrace that of the innkeeper and his wife who were bat **** crazy and it was one of my favorite scenes in the movie (Master of the House), whereas in the stage version it falls very short of that to me. Even the little girl that played Cosette amazed me. But you're definitely right about Eddie Redmayne. He was great.

My exact thoughts to a T. Not to mention she was one of the worst Catwoman as well. With Michelle Phfifer being the best potrayal. As for Anne, that reminds me I still have the Subway sandwich and a Snickers bar for her since she was rewarded.
I don't know of all the live action musicals I liked Rent, Chicago the best. Moulin Rouge however would be stretching it.
lol thats hilarious Bella! still, Anne put on one hell of an emotional performance... and in one take for that song... jaw-dropping... def. filled her mothers shoes perfectly with that performance.
Saw Warm Bodies on friday... thought it was funny. A cheesy rom com... but had a good mix of zombie action... which is really weird lol
I thought Nicholas Hoult did an amazing job as "R"... really believable zombie in love lol The soundtrack was amazing too.
Although, was I the only one that didnt realize how blatantly obvious it was that this was a zombie remake of Romeo and Juliet until like halfway through lol. Oops :P
Trailer comes tonight! Am i the only one excited? haha 5th was amazing and the best in the series if you haven't checked it out.

I know I am. AFter sitting through that Les Mis bull**** last night I could use F&F in my life again. I still think Part 4 supercedes part 5. I'm tired of them putting everybody together for 3 films now.

Not interested. It looks trifle.
I saw Gangster Squad with my friend last night.
Didn't like it.
I didn't either. I seen that and Mama and Les Mis.

ROFL. Why didn't you like it? I read the novel in 8th grade, that bull**** is so overrated, it's unbelievable, so there's no way I'm gonna see the movie.
What did you think of Mama? I'm usually really picky with horror/scary movies but that one actually gave me the creeps, I really enjoyed it.

Because I just can't take the cast seriously and its overrated trash ****. So boring.
Mama was mediocre. Its one of the horror movies where at the end you're excited to see it but when something you didn't expect happens (like the moths) you're like "stupid movie."
THIS LOOKS INSANEEEEEEEEEE :O SO EXCITED!!!
