So basically selling a season is ~24m. Makes me wonder why they would cancel if they make that much profit. I doubt they buy all those RW houses for close to 24m
so basically selling a season is ~24m. makes me wonder why they would cancel if they make that much profit. I doubt they buy all those RW houses for close to 24m
Well buying the house, then renovating it, plus production costs (equipment and stuff), plus travel fees for the housemates (depending where they live if they have to fly or not) could possibly add up to close to that. Those things are very expensive.
True, but I doubt it costs 24m for it...even if it's 23m to renovate, etc. they still gain 1m profit. 1m is still a lot of money...13 episode seasons give them an extra 2m to work with too.
I think the New Orleans house was sold to some sports dude for 1.5 million. And the show may just rent the houses...but even if they bought it, thats < 1 episodes worth of money. Plus, if they did buy it, they get all that money back when they sell the house.
What about when they have the season in a hotel suite (Las Vegas and Cancun). Last I heard about the Cancun suite is that it's still there in the hotel and people can reserve it. Do they still make money from that, or not anymore because that season is over? How about the Las Vegas suites from both seasons? Are those still there by any chance?

I've heard rumors that I believe to be reliable that during a couple of recent seasons, production costs went $500,000 over budget. On a per/hour basis vs their incarceration time at the mercy of BMP, the cast is paid pennies.

I don't know. If The LV2 suite was custom built, there might have been something in the contract that 50% of the money from reservations of that suite after that season aired would go to the hotel, and the other 50% would go to MTV/BMP/whatever. I have no clue. All I know is that I feel like they make a decent amount of money off RW season
The suites are owned by the hotel, not bmp...
LV2 was a custom built Suite for the show. So it belongs to MTV right?
LV2 was a custom built Suite for the show. So it belongs to MTV right?
They probably had some deal with the HRH...I would be shocked if HRH didn't make most if not all of the money off the suite now.
That's what I'm kinda saying. MTV bought a custom suite, HRH might have said something like after the show we get half of the money made off the suite via reservations, etc. I don't know how that works out but I doubt HRH owns the entire suite that MTV bought/had made for them...
The suite at The Palms was built for Real World. It belongs to the Maloof brothers who own The Palms. The last time I checked, one could rent it on weekends for about $10,000 per night. I've never heard any competent suggestion that LV2's suite was "owned" by MTV. The hotel would have to be zone for multiple use, including as a condominium, for there to be private suite ownership. I can't find any public Las Vegas city planning or real estate tax document that indicates MTV owns a condo.
LV2 was a custom built Suite for the show. So it belongs to MTV right?
LV2's suite was not custom built for the show. It was renovated, but not built exclusively for the show.
That's not what the screen shots on the Real World: Back to Las Vegas thread say...
The suite at the Hard Rock existed long before the Real World cast did. There are videos all over the internet about it.

I've heard that Vegas Bash 2012 is currently negotiating with the Hard Rock to use the suite as the VIP "Meet and Greet" location this year (Sept 21 ?). There are a bunch of RW/RR/FM people attending according to Brandon Nelson and the thevegasbash.com website. This appeared on the first page of today's PARADE magazine:
Q: How does the new Real World cast differ from the original cast in 1992? —Allison Dorsett, Baltimore A: “It was a more innocent time [in 1992],” says series cocreator Jonathan Murray, 57. “The role of drinking has changed. We don’t want an entire group that blacks out every night, but to reflect what life is like for young people, we don’t cast only those who drink in moderation.” Viewers of the show (MTV, Wednesdays, 10 p.m. ET) are also different now. “Our audience doesn’t see diversity as a black and white or gay and straight thing anymore,” Murray says. “It’s about personalities and values.”
Source: Jonathan Murray on the Reality of 'The Real World' | Parade.com
I don't see a problem of having people with different personalities and values, but it's much harder to be able to tell how that's going to pan out on TV. Someone could be a different person when they're going through casting interviews but then on the show they're not like that at all. Or someone may seem like they would be really interesting (Alex from SD2) but then turn out to be kind of bland. Anyone understand where I'm coming from?
The show should be cancelled. I have been watching RW since I was 8 starting with Hawaii and have been watching it up until the last season, SD2. The show hasn't been the same since its 19 season, Sydney (which is my second or third favorite season). The entire format of the show changed when the show was renewed for it's 20th season. Instead of it's original format of 7 strangers it became a show with 8, instead of it being a 30min show with 30 episodes it became a 60min show with only 12 episodes. This changed the entertainment value of the show. If BMP and MTV were smart they would have made the show like the Bad Girls Club or something closer to it. Why didn't MTV get BGC is beyond me... but I have the feeling MTV strays away from violence and extreme trashiness in their programing (BGC is entirely on another level than JS). One thing I remember about the old cast members of the RW was that they where like role models... lols funny that I'm saying this, but hear me out. More than half of the cast members went to top universities, they were smart and intelligent, they had aspirations, some were already working in their desired careers. Any way all of the cast members after season 19 are all looser, except Alex from SD2.

Yes, I know and Frank went to Middlebury. My point was that in one season at least half or more than half of the cast members went to top universities in the older seasons. SD2 is the exception to the rule. BTW enjoyed SD2.
I've been trying to stalk people's Twitter, but does anyone know what RW/RR/Challenge castmembers are currently in Vegas? I know Roylee and Brandon are, but that's pretty much it
Ummmmm Zach went to Nothern Michigan University (my alma mata) , Ashley went to UConn, Priscilla goes to UCSD, last time I checked those are pretty good colleges!!
Northern Michigan has one of the lowest average ACT scores in the state of Michigan. It's not hard to get into whatsoever. Princeton Review has its admissions rating at 68. They stop counting at 60. There are at least 5 California schools I'd rank higher than UCSD but it's probably the best school out of these three. According to the Princeton Review, UConn has an admissions rating of 86. That's decent, I suppose, but not that good. And it's alma mater...
Mike mike went to UMD. Probably the hardest school to get into in MD... I don't think going to a good university has anything to do with it. Nany went to community college. Doesn't mean she's stupid or not a role model. She probably just couldn't afford it. I'm going to community college, does that mean I suck at life too like the past 10 seasons?
Who are some Real Worlders who didn't go to college at all?
And honestly going to college really doesn't prove anything nowadays being that a college degree is pretty much an High School Diploma.
And honestly going to college really doesn't prove anything nowadays being that a college degree is pretty much an High School Diploma.
Um...no. Not even close, especially if you go to a prestigious college.
Who are some Real Worlders who didn't go to college at all?
Jonna, Ryan (NOLA), Brianna, Joey (Both), Josh, Brandon and Katelynn (?) are the most recent ones.
The premiere of Los Angeles (RW season 2 that is) is uploaded on youtube, so I was watching a little of it earlier today. One thing I noticed about the show then was how it hardly (if ever) played background music. I only saw a few minutes of it cause I had to leave to do something, so I only saw the part when Dominic is picking up Tami in the RV/bus thing. I enjoyed it though, it was like watching the Real World - Unplugged edition. There was no soap opera style editing, no background music of unknown-artists-that-are-sort-of-on-their-way, and much more diversity. I saw how Dominic was from Ireland (and he was pretty sexy, I have to say, I love his accent) and when he and Tami were picking up some cowboy (forgot his name, sorry) and they sounded more like they had no idea what to expect from each other. Of course, I do happen to be a fan of 90s nostalgia and everything, but I really do agree with whomever says that the show was more 'real' back then.
